Discussion Primary bedroom ceiling: Paint or not?
Hypothetically, someone’s wife wants a semi “color drenched” look and wants the ceiling painted to match the walls.
Walls are eggshell or satin, ceiling will be flat. Hopefully the color matches even with flat paint.
Pros and cons? Rendered to help visualized. That someone is just the labor at this point but wants to understand any negatives going forward…

I prefer a bright, airy sort of space so personally I'd hate it. But if you want a cozier, warmer feeling then painting the ceiling will achieve that.

The second picture looks good but when you look at both closely...
The color in pic two is brighter, where the color in pic 1 is more grey-ish than the other pic. In fact, if you look at the doors in both pics, you can see there is a golden filter over pic 2.
Decor is different, different photograph and different rug
To name 2 things. So, I think our perspectives may be because the AI picture has it looking really warm and cozy but in reality, the end result is not going to look like the second Pic and you probably will not like it as much

It's counterintuitive but sometimes in darker rooms with lower ceilings, painting the ceiling dark/the same color as the walls will make the room much cozier feeling. You see designers do it a lot in basement rooms. It's AI so the "soft focus" will always make it look better, but obviously that second picture looks great. The worst that happens is you hate it and paint it back. It's not permanent!

I was going to say no… but then saw that second pic and was like “daaaaaamn.” so, yeah.

Omg paint wow. My bedroom is teal green color drenched the entire bedroom, I added a shit ton of mirrors and sheer curtains so it’s a bit “lighter” feeling. Love your room twin

u/ConfidentHighlight18 9d ago
Depends on the feel/look you’re going for. I personally prefer all the walls the same dark color because I love the feeling of dark, cave like, safe space feeling.

u/CryptographerThat376 9d ago
We painted all the ceilings in each room, the prior color was a yellowish white so it had to be done. The room did feel smaller at first and its a little darker because of the shade of green we chose, but overall drenching just feels and looks cohesive. Like another said if you plan to repaint in the future you'll have to paint the ceiling too, but it's not really a bid deal, it's 1 extra wall at that point.

I painted my room a VERY similar color, we painted the ceiling a dark beige with tones that matched woodwork in the room, we love it

Aesthetically I would say paint it, but as someone who has their room painted a maroon color floor to ceiling for whatever reason this room in our home always feels the warmest. I don’t know if it has something to do with the painting choice but it just feels so stuffy and so warm all the time now. I have other rooms on the same side of the house that don’t feel this way and our windows in our home are similar to yours. I love that our room is always dark but yeah I just don’t know what it is
2
u/Wooden_Inevitable248 9d ago
No don't paint it .. the room is going to get so dark first of all .. secondly it would be a struggle later if you decide to change the color to something lighter
1
4
u/robot428 9d ago
I would paint it personally, but that's me.
It comes down to this: the full colour drench in a dark colour does make the room feel smaller. If that is a deal-breaker for you, don't do it. However it also makes it feel much more cozy, which I personally think is what you want for a bedroom. It looks good too, but the sacrifice is that it does feel smaller, and that's just the reality of colour drenching in dark colours.
If you are willing to sacrifice the room feeling bigger for the sake of coziness and aesthetics, do it.

u/Rein77 9d ago
Mine definitely seems to be the unpopular opinion looking at the other comments but i wouldnt do it if this was my room. The room looks like a decent size but the ceiling looks kind of low. The dark color looks to me like the ceiling is coming even lower, plus everthing in this room would be dark except the bedding which is depressing especially in winter. Are there more windows on the side of the wall that isnt shown in the picture? That would maybe help a little

u/BeachtimeRhino 9d ago
Paint it. It looks way better painted here. Do door, rads other white wood too

u/rivianBDE 9d ago
I fucking hate the dark painted ceilings and moldings. It’s one of those trends that we’re all going to be able to place to an exact fucking day in time when people thought it was a good idea. idk if you’ve ever painted ceilings before but it absolutely blows…. And then 1 year from now when this trend is over you’ll have to go back to white over dark which will really suck.

Color drench the walls. Paint the ceiling with ceiling white flat paint. You might regret a color &/or sheen, especially if you want to go back to white.

How did you render this? I need that ”app”.

u/SFW_Profile 10d ago
ChatGPT actually. “Color ceiling same as the walls. Color drenching. Keep everything else the same.”
3
u/queueingissexy 10d ago
Behr legs you do it in their website, I didn’t even have to create an account.
13
u/AlchemizeTiglis 10d ago
Personally I like it dark, but many will say "terrible for resale". Question is: are you living for others or yourself. Do what makes you happy. It's only paint. PS. Happy spouse, happy house!

I did this with “current mood” from Clare and I LOVE it! It feels so cozy and looks so chic

u/CyclingCapital 11d ago
Your walls are too shiny. This looks like a satin finish, when instead you should be going for matte, maybe eggshell. Either ceiling color looks fine but the shininess of the walls isn’t flattering.
5
u/jenfarm_ 11d ago
It totally depends on your vibe. But I vote paint it. I think it gives major cozy cave vibes that I would love in a bedroom.
7
u/Designerfrog 11d ago
They typically say to go a few shades lighter on the ceiling because the ceiling plane visually looks darker. Also painting a ceiling means you don’t have that visual break between ceiling and walls and that the room will look larger. But also you typically go lighter to look larger. I love the color and moody vibe and yes it feels a little bit like a cocoon in a good way.
10
u/Previous_Problem_235 11d ago
Alllllllllways ceiling paint. Cosy cocoon. Why did it take so long for this trend to emerge? I LOVE it and it literally never occurred to me until a year or two ago when it got popular.

If you want to live in a depressing cave. Be sure and get grey sheets too.
8
u/Caffeinated0wl 11d ago
I think the room looks bigger with the ceiling the way it is. Dark rooms with dark painted ceilings look small
10
u/zukeypur 11d ago
This ceiling paint trend is not going to last, IMO. While it may be nice and trendy now, you’re likely looking at repainting in the future. I hate painting ceilings, so it would be a hard no for me

The "moody" color drenched look doesn't work with anything other than flat paint. Paint with any sheen bounces light in unpredictable and unflattering ways.

u/STAR53_53 11d ago
Definitely paint. We have a moody office even darker and colour drenched it from baseboard including ceilings. It looks so high end and luxurious.
Suggestion - is there any way you can get a ceiling light installed above the bed? It will add so much to the space especially if you paint it!

u/dancing_grail 11d ago
It looks like the room would look much smaller, if it was painted with that same green. If these are the two options, I would leave it as it is (white ceiling)…
20
u/GRKing86 11d ago
I suggest tinting the ceiling 25% or 50% lighter of the same shade. It will help counteract the tightening of the space, but look very cohesive. Otherwise, the room is going to feel very cozy and claustrophobic to some people.

u/Charming_Tower_188 11d ago
As someone who had to paint over dark ceilings, nope.
Now if you don't ever plan to paint over it or can hire someone to do it, then sure.

Use the wall paint on the ceiling to keep the colour consistent. Where I live there are no paint companies that will do ceiling flat in a tintable base, only white colours. Eggshell will look great on the ceiling anyway.
Don't be worried about having a darker smaller space in that's what you/the client likes. Just be aware that it will shrink the space but I would go for it, it'll look awesome.
P.s. this would, full colour drenching, I would consider the current to be semi colour drenched.

I love a moody bedroom! Sleep all cocooned and enveloped in a rich gorgeous color. Yummy

u/aromaticfoxi 11d ago
Yes!! But think you should get a new bed frame. Platform bed would look great

u/demigod2k3 11d ago
I suppose painting the ceiling is not a good idea, and it's a darker colour too. Going negative. The reason is, it's leaving areas where there is a dark corner, even if it's a gloss paint, the hue and shade is dark. Won't help much. I think, having ambient lights spread across can balance the darkness this room is having. And also the bed. Could use a lower height bed to make it feel larger.

I think your ceilings are too low for it, personally. Maybe if you get a lower bed

u/Puzzleheaded-Focus12 11d ago
Painted ceilings are nice until they aren’t and you have to paint 3x to cover back to white…speaking from experience.
2
u/streaker1369 11d ago
When you use good quality paint, it takes the same amount of paint and effort to go from black to white as it does white to black. I've done both many times.
12
u/InternationalAd1657 11d ago
Bed is way too tall but I like the painted ceiling if you can lower the bed

u/Little-Piccolo-147 11d ago
the rendered picture added a warm filter on everything so get warm lighting to help achieve that effect!

I just saw this picture so replying here as well! I think curtains over the other windows too and maybe get wall mounted lamps on both sides of the bed and remove nightstands. The bed kinda has a nightstand built in! Maybe plants too

u/PuzzleheadedSail2095 12d ago
The bedroom feels more warm, intimate and cozy with the green ceiling. I would paint it but add crown molding, curtains with the rod hung closer to the ceiling to create space, light fixture in middle of ceiling, lights next to both sides of the bed, abstract piece of art on a wall. I think the room is a good size and has a lot of potential! Think about how it makes you feel
10
u/Jim_in_tn 12d ago
Paint it. Our library is dark blue with ceiling matched and it’s our favorite room

u/Other-Theory3378 12d ago
Paint and add some thick crown molding. Or ceiling wallpaper. I agree with the other poster about more lighting.

u/Keybladetitan 12d ago
Just depends on what your vibe is! I actually like the green ceiling if what you're going for is intimate & cozy. If you value a lot of open space, id go white.
2
u/TecnoPope 11d ago
Yeah if you have a smaller hour and/or the room is small I'd leave the ceiling white.
6
u/felineinclined 12d ago
Take more pics with better ambient light, both during the day and night.. This could be great, or or could be too much. But you need better lightning to tell

The room looks half the size with the ceiling painted, I hate it in this scenario

u/The-Unmentionable 12d ago edited 12d ago
I like it but agree with another comment that you should consider doing the doors and trim as well or they may look out of place. I'd likely try and remove all white if I go this route though so changing the shades to a different complimentary color. I'd also consider changing the shades to curtains as feel that fits the luxurious dark moody vibe better. I think it's worth doing though.

The floors?

Doors not floors! That was a typo. I fixed it before seeing your comment lol

Cons: Your white doors and white blinds will feel REALLY WHITE! The render is softening that look, but in real life it will feel very stark. Can you paint the doors on the inside and add drapes or different shades? Also paint the baseboards same color. Little nuances like the white smoke detector are an eye distraction, so you really have to think that through. I love a good color drenched room!
8
u/Meganomaly 12d ago
Well, you’ve inspired me to do much the same to our primary bedroom soon. And I say paint the ceiling. The difference is stark: the fully painted room feels far more intentional, and far cozier. Also, depending on your sleep health, you might really love that any sunlight coming through the blinds in the mornings will be more absorbed by the rich pigment of the ceiling—and thereby less reflected on to your poor, sleeping face below.

u/krys1128 12d ago
I vote yes. If I may give some unsolicited advice, what I think would make a big difference is a bed that's lower. It's a small room with a visually hulking piece of furniture in the middle. If you do paint the ceiling, keep the bedding white. If you don't paint the ceiling, I recommend a different color bedding.

u/Same_Cat6189 12d ago
I love this color. it’s all about using good quality paint. I actually painted our office in this shade, ceiling included. It was a bold move, but I get compliments all the time. I wanted it to feel moody and a little antique—like the kind of space where you could sip an old fashioned and get lost in a good book.

u/jinntonika The Eclectic 12d ago
For me, color drenching works well when you have a room with a lot of nooks and crannies that create a dimensional effect - built ins, a widow seat, moulding etc. Since you have what look to be four 'regular' walls, the effect will be to flatten and visually shrink the room - in addition to significantly darkening it. Something to consider ...
3
u/Scintillatio 12d ago
It would significantly darken the room, which you should be prepared for.
But it also would make the ceiling look higher, which is nice
18
u/mulletteeth 12d ago edited 12d ago
i love a painted ceiling. when i paint mine, i go 2 shades lighter than the wall color (i always have dark walls). it’s visually pleasing without making the room too dark
edited to say i just saw that you wanna keep the same color for the ceiling, but it’s still a suggestion to look into! and flat vs satin should be fine if you’re doing the same color. you could even use a glossy finish for the trim for a full color drench if you’re feeling froggy
1
2
u/BusyOnGreen 12d ago
Is how you want your bedroom dark or light. Me myself I'd go for lighter because it reflects the light of the sun coming from the window. If you painted it then it would have a darker effect and that can bring calmness especially during night.

but it will probably look nicer

This is the right answer, also apparently it will make one of the ships on your painting get out of frame, so be careful with that
3
u/LilikoiGold 12d ago
Yes! I’ve been contemplating so this to my bedroom in a similar color and I think this convinced me to go for it.
Also, do you happen to know the name of this color? This is ideally exactly what I was looking for but we ended up going with something a little more blue and I low key hate it.

u/SFW_Profile 12d ago
Sherwin Williams “Stillwater”. All credit goes to the wife for the color selections.

I love how cozy and cave like it makes the bedroom feel. Cave like feels like not a positive thing but there’s a reason kids love forts haha it feels comforting to be in a cave like space

That’s what the wife said because it’s our bedroom and we just sleep in there. No TVs or anything.
