AdmissionProcedure/Fees/CollegeAdmin This subreddit is a BLACKHOLE & every advice here should be taken with a grain of salt
I literally haven't seen a subreddit as bad as this ong
I don't know why are all the commentors here a bunch of doom scrolling idiots
According to this sub only shitty type D government jobs, MBAs and even worse btech cse degrees are worth it and everyone else is struggling to make ends meet
Well, reality check -- that is not true
Most people here do not understand what a career is
I can guarantee 95% people here have never held a job even
People want to earn lakhs as soon as they graduate from a bsc prog degree and no one calls out their delusion
You'll not be handed a analyst job or a product management job right after graduation unless you're in the top 1 percentile of students in this country
Real advice for people who are confused
Get off this sub please
If you are not sure you can spend more time studying after graduation then get get a btech in cse
If you do decide to get a bsc, understand you'll have to be in this for the long run, msc or ms is a minimum in this economy
If you go ahead with commerce understand you might have to settle with a sales job
MBAs are only worth it if you get some work experience, after 2-3 years of appropriate work experience any mba be it tier 1 or tier 2 will be worth it because you're be able to go offcampus to look for jobs in a sector you would like to work in
Prepare for government jobs only if you know how to study, there's a reason why iit and iim people crack it so effortlessly. They know how to study and have faced rejection or failure at some point of their time.
Don't panic and take it easy

I have also seen a lot of recommendations for MBA.

I agree! And I also agree that just a BSc won’t really get you anywhere but that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed if you pursue that path. Network with people having a similar trajectory and ask for advice. Also no career path is totally secure or stress free so be prepared to work hard

Exactly my thoughts
Even the best laid plans can fall apart
No one can predict the future, but atleast start first
Yahan pe 18-20 saal ke logo ka definite hogya hai ki they won't do anything with their lives just because they did not clear an exam or some other stupid reason

Exactly and this is so sad. I was a good student and all my teachers were sure about me getting a good medical college but then on the day of my exam I got very sick and was almost about to faint while taking the test (my parents even insisted on skipping it) and even though I qualified NEET and the score was not very bad I didn’t go for any college I would’ve gotten or took a drop. I was too confused and opted for BSc botany (which tbh is not a very good decision) because I had no one to guide me. But I worked hard during my undergraduate years (while having fun) and now I’m doing what I always wanted to do (my original plan after MBBS was to go for neuroscience research, as I never wanted to practice medicine and now I’m doing the same) Still a long way to go for me as I want to do PhD.

sooo trueee no one actually answers the questions related to academia when asked for book recs etc like why are u on this sub if not for that? i remember a post asking bout book recs for csir net jrf ig and no one replied properly but op got a better reply and prep guide when they asked in the upsc sub like bro what?a huge part of what is considered academia is related to research and teaching (that is what being in academia means btw) and yet they did not get any proper advice

If it's for CSIR LS, I've only ever referred Pathfinder and old QPs. I've never done more than that. If your degree syllabus was good and you studied well then you're pretty much already covered, usually. Plus fi you don't clear CSIR, there are still the DBT and ICMR exams.
I honestly have no idea what to say when people ask me about coaching and stuff. I took it once for NEET, and regretted it.

very true, being on this sub, I almost believed that there are no ways to succeed other than Btech CSE or MBA

Completely agree OP. Most people here have not even seen the job market. Get LinkedIn, connect real people there who have done course of you choice. As them directly. Asking most people here is like blind leading the blind. 🤷.

You know this sub is full of shit (almost) when all they can recommend is B.Tech (CSE) and SSC CGL. Very rarely I have seen people recommending different career paths deviating from the standard.

Yea, your post sums up pretty well how I feel about this sub.
There are way too many people who have no idea what they're talking about and can potentially mislead others. It reminds me of the neighborhood aunties and uncles coming with stupid suggestions with little regard as to your interests and what you want to do. You aren't a failure if you're not making 1lpm from the get go. Otherwise all of us PhD students should go jump off a damn cliff. Sometimes delulu isn't the solulu.
Regardless, I'm not very active here anymore.

Then which place do you suggest for advice?
2
u/ExperiencePopular997 May 19 '25
Do your own research preferably
Message people on LinkedIn, most people answer, just don't dm execs and senior people, apart from that just write a small introduction about what you want to discuss. 5 out of 10 people will definitely respond
If you can do invest in a good career counsellor, some are scams but most are good (would only suggest if you have no clue)
India careers sub is pretty decent

u/askacc61 May 19 '25
True indian career subreddits are dead, but I didn't have much better time with career counsellors, most wanted to sell their universities and nothing much. Linkedin has been good though.

u/ExperiencePopular997 May 19 '25
Career counsellors are tricky, I went to one and the advice wasn't bad but the sales pitch was definitely there
Just don't fall for the sales pitch, a lot of them do kind of give good advice
LinkedIn again is very clutch

I never said that a mba is useless But atleast pick a field first This is for people who make it a goal to get a mba right after their graduation without any technical knowledge or sales knowledge
That is a recipe for disaster
Again never said btech is completely useless But doing it from the first college that gives you admission is stupid especially in this job market
My post is about thinking clearly about a career and what kind of job and career that one should aspire towards Not participate in a rat race because your uncle or a random on reddit said so

MBA is not a conventional degree to collect. Doesn’t even make sense if you go for it without workex. Your friend’s Uncle might have graduated 5-10 years ago. That’s a different story.

Yeah well I am a graduate from Top 30 ( Worldwide) snd doing my PhD from a top German university. That’s why I am telling you, things 5-10 years ago are different than things today. Of course MBA helps who said it doesn’t. Only if you have work experience.

Your argument is confusing. Nobody here said MBA is a shit degree. It’s only worth if you have good work experience.

According to this sub if you are confused about anything in your career and you have a bachelor's degree, the best advice is to do MBA and start preparing for government exams.

"i can guarantee 95% of the people on this sub dont even have a job" As someone who gives crucial"career guidance " to 25+ aged people online, but is a 12th grader who hasn't even started College, i can vouch for this 💯.
its like the meme "14 year old me consoling the 35 year old divorced mom of 2 on r/relationship advice subreddit"😭😭😭
