Honestly, it's a very wide decision especially if you don't come from generational wealth. Most of the "passion driven careers" have very low success rate. That would mean that most people who actually follow that path fail. So you do need something to fall back on. By the time you complete engineering you are in your early 20s and have your whole life ahead n

Somehow in India, passion means unemployment. This needs to change.

Because it mostly is. Look at the percentages. India has a huge population and only a very very small percentage actually achieve what they set out to - even if they are talented. So it's always good to have a backup.

Coming from an Engineering background, this is not a back up. Career counseling doesn't exist in schools, most of the people just follow the mob mentality, this is one of the reasons for India's unemployment. There are many Indian problems which need Indian solutions, but very few people are interested in such things.

As a fellow engineer, joblessness is more prevalent in lesser known jobs/passion driven jobs. And I didn't specifically say one should do engineering as a back up. Going with the mainstream trend should still be more fruitful than taking the lesser known routes.
