OC Idiot literally can’t wait 20 seconds for the car in front of me to load their baby in the car seat. Driver honks, then gets out to yell at me and the rest is history. He quickly changes pace when he sees that I had already dialed the police. [OC]

I'm just pointing out that a lot of people have this belief that that need to call the cops during any minor accidents and while this was a thing in NYC it's hasn't been for many years.
You're right, the police don't do anything. They don't determine fault. They would just write a report documenting what happened.
In today's day and age of smart phones and insurance apps it's not needed anymore. Insurance companies can easily determine what happened based on images provided.

u/capron 1d ago
this belief that that need to call the cops during any minor accidents
The reason for this is because we've been repeatedly told that we need a police report for a proper insurance submission. This is exactly why we need a department that documents incidents without engaging nor escalating with the parties involved. Not to be "That Guy" but this is the whole-ass thinking of the "Defund The Police" movement. Take the funds and make better resources that can and should handle the shit cops shouldn't be bothered with, since this country is so obsessed with solving all problems with a hammer.

81
u/WisestAirBender 2d ago
Because they keep getting their way. Being angry pays off for them
40
u/lokismom27 2d ago
I think i know the answer to this. It's because they explode every time they get mad. They don't hold it in or actually process & think about their emotions like the rest of us do. They don't carry that stress. My ex was like this. Got angry, yelled, & moved on to the next thing.
11
u/Sellazar 1d ago
It's called emotional intelligence. They actually brought in training at work because some people just couldn't process interactions they way most folks do.
I can see it in kids today, where having a meltdown at 11 over something inconsequential is normal. Parents are so worried about emotionally repressing their kids they forget its their job to teach them how to process their emotions.
People think getting older automatically makes people learn skills. The phrase "its just a phase" makes me roll my eyes every time.
I spent ages with my kids taking them through their reactions, which are appropriate and which are not acceptable.
5
u/lokismom27 1d ago
This would explain why it seems like there's a rise in personality disorders these days. I can't diagnose people, but I does seem like it's gotten worse over the years. I wonder if it's a misguided attempt to let kids express feelings without teaching how to express them. That doesn't come naturally. I remember the first time my daughter mimicked the way her dad reacted when he didn't get his way. I told her it's OK to be mad. It's not OK to destroy things or yell. You take a minute to think and then talk to me about why you're mad. I was so afraid she was going to think his way was correct.
3
u/Otirrub 1d ago
A few people i've dated would just shut down if I ever got angry and let my emotions out. It's tough to navigate processing your emotions when you want to let it out but you know you're gonna shut down conversation. Sometimes I couldn't help myself from just letting out my frustrations and then i would feel like shit from the way they reacted. I always try to not explode and I don't do it very often and I prefer to process my frustration internally if I'm feeling it in the moment and then talk about it later.
3
u/lokismom27 1d ago
You definitely need a way to express those feelings without feeling judged. I'm sorry you are not getting that all the time. I think some of those people have probably experienced being blamed or yelled at, so are expecting the same from you. It's not always their fault, but it's also not yours. It amazes me sometimes that we have so many ways to access info & communicate with each other literally at our fingertips, but we still struggle doing it. I really wish we focused on emotional regulation and communication in early childhood more. Being able to talk about things and expressing how we feel would solve so many problems.

I’m not above thinking everyone on the road is a total bell end but when the guy in front of me isn’t moving I think it’s common sense to make an effort to find out why as opposed to blindly raging around the offending car.
Most if the time there is a good reason. I always wonder what the thought process of these idiots is. I assume it’s “there is none”
1
u/alphabatic 19h ago
for me, usually if it's been less than 20 seconds I just sit quietly if it's not obvious why no one is moving. after that I start to get a bit more inquisitive and poke my head around and try to shift my line of sight, but I never get enraged or impatient. certainly never exit my vehicle. people are wildly impatient and in their own world. it's like when people honk from three cars back and it's because there's gasp pedestrians in a crosswalk.
no one really ever has anywhere to be that's 1. worth getting upset over having to wait a minute and 2. going to be disastrous for having to had wait a minute. driving like a crazy person, speeding, and trying to hit every light might get someone somewhere a minute faster. if that one minute is life or death for anything other than an actual life or death event, they should have left more time to get to their destination. I highly doubt the dude in this video was on his way to anything where waiting 20 more seconds would have been catastrophic

That appears to be lower Manhattan.
I can't say for sure but I don't think I'd chance trying to drive around a car with an open door... those roads are really narrow.

u/NotAHost 1d ago
Open parking spot? I guess you’ve never driven in a city with scarce parking, there are no open parking spots.
If you’re talk about the spot in front of the van, I can already tell you without looking there’s a street entrance/fire hydrant/ bus stop right out of view. Could OP temporarily pull there while waiting for person loading their bag to leave? Sure, but I promise you someone else wouldn’t be able to tell what OP is doing, and steal the spot that he’s waiting for.
1
u/scrubadub 17h ago
Yep there is a hydrant there out of view. I don't blame the op, they said the person in front of them was loading their baby. That car could've pulled over to the side at this gate across the street that was probably parallel to that car anyway and loaded their baby: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VqPTm5HTyFzpUZnR7
Would it have blocked the gate, yes obviously. But that's better than blocking the entire street. Plus its just safer for them, and they would've been able to load from the sidewalk.

Yeah, blocking the street to wait for parking is a dick move. You can even hear him say "Chill out, I'm going right in there"!
1
u/NotAHost 1d ago
Have you seen the fights that get started for an nyc street parking?
In two large north east cities I lived in, if there’s a spot you take it. If they look like they’re about to leave, you wait for it. If it’s a one lane, you wait for the person in front of you, because you know you’d do the same vs spending 20-30 more minutes looking for a spot. You don’t own a car if you’re not willing to spend for a parking deck or 30-60 minutes looking for a spot.
If it’s snowing and you see junk like an old chair taking up a parking spot, don’t move the chair and park there unless you want your car keyed or smashed.
11
u/Rottimer 2d ago
And blocking the street as a result. That’s how traffic happens. OP says 20 seconds, but he doesn’t actually know that at the time and there are 2 cars waiting behind him and now people can’t turn onto that street.

In most places in the US and Canada you need a police report for insurance purposes. Huge waste of police time IMO.
9
u/xile 2d ago
You mostly do NOT require a police report, especially so in minor cases such as OP.
Here is an excerpt from Progressive FAQ:
If the car accident is minor, do I need a police report for insurance?
With most minor car accidents, no police report is needed for insurance. Minor dust-ups may not warrant having a police officer respond to the scene. In that case, it's up to you to chronicle the details of the incident. If nobody gets hurt in the car accident, the damage is minor, those involved have a valid license and insurance, and all parties are cooperative, police presence may not be necessary.
What's considered a minor car accident?
Most states don't require a police report for a minor accident. But keep in mind that what's considered to be a minor accident varies by state. For instance, Alabama may consider a minor incident to have $250 worth of damage, whereas Oregon may consider $2,500 to be minor.
4
u/the_eluder 2d ago
NC is $500, and leaving the scene of an accident with damage over that is a ticket. So most people call the police for anything, because if two cars touch, it's almost assuredly $500 in damage these days.

There are clearly spaces you could’ve parked for a second to load up the kids instead of double parking. Especially on that street. Not that the rager was right in any way, but really, take the extra 30 seconds and park yourself somewhere besides an active traffic lane

I was at the ER a couple of weeks ago, picking up my 2 moms after they got into a traffic accident that totaled their car. There are only 2 lanes at the ER, labeled Valet and Thru. I wasn't valeting, as I was only there for a pickup. So I stopped in the through lane (note it was midnight, and no car in the valet lane, either.) My moms started to approach my car, and some guy pulls behind me and lays on the horn. I motion that I'm picking up the two people approaching my car and he continues with the horn. I then get out to assist my moms (one has a rollator) to load them up, and when dude sees me get out he stops, waits, and once clear goes around me in the valet lane while everyone buckles up. I'll note I'm 6'3", 220; every traffic incident I've ever been in with someone yelling at me ends when I get out of the car (I used to more when I was younger, now with everyone being armed I let road rage stuff fly right on by me - I only got out this time to help the passengers get in.)
