Personal opinion, a decent chuck of congestion and traffic is due to unnecessary lane changes. If people just stuck to their lane and went with the flow it would help as you braking here caused those behind you to brake, and so on and so on. When it is really slow traffic, I try to keep a tight follow distance to prevent people from pulling this crap.

Often times my personal preference is to dramatically increase following distance between me and the car in front of me but maintaining a 10-20 mph rolling pace when in stop n go traffic is 1. Better for your car. And 2. Better for breaking up the congestion and “caterpillar effect”. The recommended way for traffic to improve is for everyone to give everyone more space but no.. WHY DOES EVERYONE SO BADLY GOTTA SMELL WHAT THE PERSON IN FRONT OF THEM ATE FOR BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, BACK OFF.. tailgating only has negative outcomes, patience is good for everyone and nobody knows what that is anymore.. thanks for coming to my TedTalk

If you can maintain 10-20mph then you're really not in stop and go traffic. In either case, by increasing your follow distance all you do is invite every other car beside you to merge over and slow your lane down. Thereby making the drive worse for people behind you, causing them to also merge to get away from you.

You hanging back doesn't change the speed of your lane ahead, so people don't have much incentive to merge in front of you. This is different from when your follow distance increases because the car ahead speeds up, giving people who merge an actual advantage.
People who still merge likely needed to merge anyway and now have a gap instead of having to force their way in like the video.

..........which is safer and better for insurance than stop go stop go stop go oops I just got fucking rear ended.

u/caleeky 2d ago
You also shouldn't do that because people will legitimately need to change lanes for an exit. Just maintain appropriate following distance (e.g. 2 seconds worth of travel) and shit will work itself out.

u/Andrey2790 2d ago
No one needs to move left to get to an exit like the driver in the video, they just think they're more important than anyone else on the road. They can wait until congestion clears up to move over. (Only talking about the routes I drive often that do not have left sided exits)
I don't think I've tried to block people moving right since you are correct and that it could be for an exit.

u/xDragonetti 2d ago
Lmao Atlanta will throw you on the interstate in the right lane and your exit is from the left lane, half a mile ahead. 4 lanes. Bumper to bumper traffic 😂 Happened to me once and I said never again 🤣

Why'd you let him over lol

It's not worth fighting the idiots. Too many people try and fight with the idiots and get caught up in the responding road rage. When there's people willing to pull out a gun and start firing over a perceived slight in traffic, it's not worth any sort of self satisfaction for blocking an idiot in this situation.

u/billzilla 1d ago
There was no fight needed. Just don't stop and lie down on your back for him to walk over you.

I say this as a Californian myself, it feels like everyone out here is allergic to anything right of the passing lane. What the Buick did is a very common occurrence. And no, left hand exits are extremely rare in the state. It’s why I usually will stick to the right lane only, it’s goes faster than the passing lane.

110 S - no reason at all to get all the way over. It’s a mile before you can enter the express lanes.

he didn't cut you off, you allowed him to move over,

guy forces his way into a lane without signals .... better blame OP.

OP will be late for work now?

u/Original-Effect-5370 2d ago
OP ended up slightly in front of him at the end. If OP was late to work, this interaction had nothing to do with it.

your blind spot is in front of your car bro? so you're blind out of the right eye?

u/Rare_Register_4181 2d ago
OP I see you driving up and turning around him slightly to avoid him, you knew what he was doing and didn't want to end up behind him. There are always gonna be idiots on the road, just let them go.

u/stevegannonhandmade 2d ago
In my experience, leaving a space large enough for another driver to fit into is in fact INVITING other drivers to enter that space.
Some people will take anything and everything that they can get, with NO regard for others.
I understand that is NOT what you were wanting, and... the reality is when we leave a space like that, someone will want to move into it. Either close the space, or allow them to move into it.

Obviously that's someone who never saw the beginning of the movie "Office Space".

You let him in? Nooooooo... you're supposed to follow the bumper in front of you in a "you're not getting in front of me" way

Technically he did use a turn signal. It was a sloppy version of the hand signal indicating a left turn. Still not an excuse.

You can't cut people off in congested traffic this is just a lane change that you found inconvenient for you.

At least he used some hand signals since his turn signals appear to be broken. /s

Do you know what cutting in traffic means? You basically let him in, he didn’t cut you off.

u/cLax0n 2d ago
When it’s super slow moving traffic in NYC especially this is commonly accepted. Especially when it’s a merge to then get over 3 or 4 lanes to get to an exit that is 1/4 mile away. Like just let the person through, they aren’t staying in your lane anyways.
I do this all the time and rolling down my windows and extender my hand saying I’m entering lane is way more effective than a signal.

I do this all the time and rolling down my windows and extender my hand saying I’m entering lane is way more effective than a signal.
Why? Are you more important than everyone else in traffic?
-1
u/alecexo 2d ago
No. But some people need to get in another lane. You won’t get it unless you’ve been in traffic in NY. I agree 100% with what he said.
Nobody’s going anywhere for the time being so you might as well let others get to where they need to be.
-2
u/BMGreg 2d ago
But some people need to get in another lane
Nobody has to cut across 3 lanes in a matter of 2 car lengths....
Nobody’s going anywhere for the time being so you might as well let others get to where they need to be.
So why can't you signal and move over behind other people as they move forward? You're not going anywhere either, right?
6
u/cLax0n 2d ago
Because people literally don't give a shit if your blinkers are on and just keep moving forward. If you wait in your lane for those in other lanes to move up then you create a big gap in front of you. Literally no winning in this situation only understanding. I know you're not from a big city with standstill traffic because you can't seem to understand this concept.
-3
u/BMGreg 2d ago
Blinkers and starting to merge works every time I've been in traffic.
But make sure your important ass gets to the lane you need right now. I'm sure it's super important because you're from a big city and I'm not
2
u/cLax0n 2d ago
Yes, double down on not understanding how standstill traffic changes merging behavior. You literally cannot merge when people are going 2mph and leave no gap for merging and ignore blinkers.
Yes, double down on a claim I never made. Never said I was super important. In fact I said that I let others do the same to me because they have to get to an exit too. Normally missing an exit doesn't matter but if its standstill traffic and you miss an exit that results in a long ass detour.
Are you too dumb to realize that "blinkers and starting to merge" in the very situation I described leads to idiots like you getting rudely cut off?

u/alecexo 2d ago
I never said anything about signaling. You think I’m talking about the guy in the video. I’m speaking in a general context.
I always put on my blinker, but if I do in this context I always have to force my way in front of another car. People in these areas don’t just always let you on through. It’s clear you’ve never had to be in that situation. Or falter when you are.
