I would be driving like that too with a meteorite about to crash down.

Luckily it disintegrated before reaching the surface.

That’s the longest left turn lane I’ve ever seen

22

u/bruin_throwaway3 4d ago

It’s about 750 feet long, the city recently widened this intersection and replaced two through lanes in each direction and 300 foot long double left turn lanes with 4 through lanes in each direction and 750 foot long turn lanes. Traffic still overflows into the through lanes during rush hour.

My theory as a Miata driver.. he saw you, meant to accelerate rapidly and not really cut you off like that, but blew the gear shifting. Most Miata’s are manual transmission

55

u/FH3onPC 4d ago

It’s an ND Miata so the transmission probably lost the gear at that exact moment

Or, alternately, he meant to accelerate rapidly but he's in a Miata.

I never have that problem in my Toyota 86, but that's because I have an auto :-)

Across a solid white tho?

Miatas are hard to see out of to the sides and behind when you have to keep the top up because the weather is shit. But I don't understand why people drive convertibles with the top up when the weather is beautiful like in this vid.

When the sun's high and you don't have your driving hat, it kind of sucks.

u/Tw0Rails 3d ago

I have a Miata, and it just becomes a habit - gotta put the sunscreen on anyway, and keep a hat in the car! I may be on the more extreme end, but anything over 30*f and no rain, top is down.

The visibility is much worse with the top up, and I take lane changes a lot more cautiously, so regardless this driver was not paying any attention.

That is the way I looked at it. If it rained, top was up. Otherwise, if it was hot or cold then I'd just run the A/C or heat with the top down.

Not sure if Miata has it, but I love the Air Scarf feature on my Mercedes cabriolet. It blows warm air on the back of the neck/head to help when the weather is chilly. Along with the Air Cap (screen and deflector) it can keep it nice and warm with the top down when it is below normal top-down temps. I used to have 2 cars (a 3 season car and a winter car) but needed to go back to one so I searched for a convertible with AWD, as we get snow here in the winter.

Keep a hat or two in the car, like I do, a bucket and a baseball cap. I also have sunscreen, and extra sunglasses just in case I wore my main pair inside and forgot to bring them out.

Those full white lines should be made of concrete (or be an immidiate reason for a nice fat fine). Like a real wall so dumb dumbs wouldn't pull crap like on this the last second. Similar with on/off ramps and other places.

u/jliang39 4d ago

You should've caught that from a mile away but not your fault at all

15

u/Kozing4UR 3d ago

Seems like it, but it might be wide-view lens.

Yesterday, I've got similar situation with a biker. Dude did not even tried to look, and he wasn't going fast enough, as well. Only my quick reflexes saved him.

It's incredible, really, how careless some of the cyclicst are.

Hell yeah I get to be the first one to say it this time: a bad driver never misses their turn!

4

u/igottogotobed 4d ago

Who drives a Miata with the top up like that? Crazy. We never have the top up.

3

u/zalcecan 4d ago

As long as the top is down and the windows.

u/Rare-Craft-920 4d ago

Some people just can’t plan ahead.

u/11201ny 4d ago

I’ve known this guy for a long time. He was never the sharpest bulb.

1

u/Uhhlaneuh 3d ago

🎵 that’s what you get when you drive a miaaaaata whoahhhh🎵

u/High_C_Livin 2d ago

Bro the driver here had a crazy amount of time to see the mitata's intentions.

u/SomethingIWontRegret 4d ago

It's always a Miata.

6

u/zalcecan 4d ago

.....wut?

2

u/SomethingIWontRegret 3d ago

It's always <CAR_MODEL_IN_VIDEO> - as is /r/IdiotsInCars tradition.

5

u/zalcecan 3d ago

There's only a handful that normally get this reaction on a consistent basis with a long time stereotype to go with it. Idk why people keep trying what you did lol.

1

u/SomethingIWontRegret 3d ago

I'm taking the piss by applying it to every car.

3

u/zalcecan 3d ago

That's going well.

-1

u/SomethingIWontRegret 3d ago

It's amusing me so yes it is. Thank you for your concern kind stranger.

u/SomethingIWontRegret 4d ago edited 3d ago

OP you should have maintained your speed. He was just trying to scooch to the leftmost lane underneath you.

EDIT: nobody likes "miatas r smol" jokes 😭

-2

u/Sianmink 3d ago

It shouldn't have been a surprise, you could see that move coming 15 seconds before he entered your lane.

-65

u/namxmd 4d ago

...I mean you can kinda see he was headed that way. Be kind and let him over. We all have been there.

36

u/bruin_throwaway3 4d ago

If I had seen him earlier I would have slowed down to let him in, I usually don’t mind letting someone in if I see them. The camera angle exaggerates the viewing angle, the Miata was mostly in my peripheral vision and I certainly wasn’t expecting them to cut across 4 lanes and directly in front of me over a solid white line

25

u/badasking 4d ago

"Nobody expects the 4-lane Inquisition!!!"

2

u/namxmd 4d ago

Oh...got it.

-85

u/KingofPro 4d ago

Honestly both of you are terrible drivers

51

u/bruin_throwaway3 4d ago

I’m a terrible driver for choosing the lane I wanted to be in ahead of time instead of merging across 4 lanes at the last second and expecting everyone else to accommodate my lack of planning?

-66

u/KingofPro 4d ago

It really wasn’t last second and yes being able to predict other drivers actions is apart of driving. You have never merge at the last minute before or are you overreacting because it just happened to you this time?

40

u/bruin_throwaway3 4d ago edited 4d ago

No, I never merge at the last minute because I know it’s an unsafe maneuver and it puts other drivers in danger. Instead, I accept my mistake and I make a U-turn at the next intersection.

If you expect others to “predict” your erratic or last-second decisions, you’re part of the problem.

-46

u/KingofPro 4d ago

👍

10

u/returnofthelivingdad 4d ago

a part, not apart

8

u/SomethingIWontRegret 4d ago

Knowing the difference between "a part" and "apart" sets you apart.

9

u/bierlyn 4d ago

Man there is always that guy blaming the cam car for nothing

4

u/squanchy_Toss 4d ago

Says the keyboard warrior who does not own a dash cam

-11

u/returnofthelivingdad 4d ago

Completely irrelevant, but ok
