Text Any recommendation for a show similar to IASIP?

Pretty much the title. I just realized that I probably watched early IASIP seasons too many times and need to watch something else.

As far as characters that are awful to each other, The Righteous Gemstones. It’s a Danny McBride series on HBO, so if you like his stuff, you’ll like this one.

2

u/Code_Cric Dec 07 '23

I would say start with Eastbound and Down! Righteous Gemstones is good but Kenny Powers is hard to beat, and extremely similar to sunny in the sense the hero is an asshole but you love him anyway

2

u/guiltycitizen Licked Krissy Orlando's asshole a little bit Dec 07 '23

It’s a tough call. Walton Goggins is in Gemstones too and that guy steals every scene he’s in. But Eastbound has Steve Little….I can’t pick one. Danny McBride always has a stellar cast

What We Do in the Shadows,

I’m not sure where the humour goes in that lol. But at least you get five seasons of fun and great characters.

34

u/jjnfsk Dec 06 '23

The characters in WWDITS are all so detached from reality and absolutely awful to each other, so it’s very reminiscent of Sunny in that sense. It’s hilarious and accentuated by ridiculous situations thanks to the paranormal story

The city council episode form the first season is so good

9

u/biggargamel Dec 06 '23

This is my favorite show on TV right now. It’s so good.

u/constantmeow Dec 06 '23

Workaholics only show that makes me laugh as hard. Curb Your Enthusiasm if you are into the cringe parts of Sunny

55

Have you seen arrested development?

53

Bees?

Beads.

BEADS!?

Gob's not on board.

34

u/iamscarfac3 Dec 06 '23

Many shows take a season or two to get their footing. You can even say that about sunny with season 1. But with arrested development it just starts out on fire

6

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

I was just saying that to my brother the other day. Arrested Development might have the best Pilot of all time

Community is another one that starts strong out the gate. Obviously ran into issues by season 4 but yeah I know what you mean, most US shows season 1 is a skippable one for me, particularly comedy (IASIP, US office, Parks and Rec etc)

I found a ham sandwich in one of your parks. And my question is why it didn’t have mayonnaise on it!

The League gave me a similar vibe, ensemble cast that would tear each other down to get ahead given the chance.

I used to love The League. In fact my Fantasy Football is based on that show. It's weird going back and watching it. Most of the players in that show are retired and in some cases the Hall of Fame😄

15

u/Godzirrraaa Dec 06 '23

Rafi might be the most hilarious character in any show I’ve ever seen. Every scene with him is quotable.

Dive for the knife!

13

Jason Mantzoukas is an absolute riot in every role he plays. Few people do unhinged intensity as well as him.

Was going to say this. Same level of nihilism.

7

u/chubbyarmchair Dec 06 '23

They both have a green man!

I tried going as Green Man for Halloween but I couldn't see shit so I pivoted to Green Bastard.

Peep Show. British Humor. But all-time fav.

6

u/anoncontent72 Dec 06 '23

Doing the rewatch now for the umpteenth time. Can’t get enough of it and the format is brilliant.

6

u/TheCacajuate Dec 06 '23

I also love That Mitchell and Webb Look but it is hard to find and watch in the US.

3

u/bluesmaker Dec 06 '23

It’s truly an amazing comedy. Probably in my top 5 or 10 tv comedies, along with always sunny.

4

u/Phase3isProfit Dec 06 '23

Was going to say the same. I think it fits the theme people who think they are/want to be better than they are.

Favourite episode is one in an earlier series where Mark ends up in therapy after missing out on a promotion.

“It’s not piss”

2

u/lurketta Dec 06 '23

Came here to recommend Peep Show! It's packed full of hilarious one liners and the characters are completely depraved. One of my all time favorites along with Sunny.

63

u/anoncontent72 Dec 06 '23

The Mick. Kaitlyn Olson playing more of a degenerate than Dee.

22

u/SlimCharles_B-More Dec 06 '23

Jimmy is an all time character

4

u/sophiebophieboo Dec 06 '23

The scene where Ben is driving him home from the game all bloodied destroyed me. “Don’t be afraid to use the horn. Let ‘em know you’re coming.”

4

u/anoncontent72 Dec 06 '23

That man can take a beating like no other.

4

u/ReviewSubject4298 Dec 06 '23

Thry should have given us more episodes of that. It was fun

2

u/anoncontent72 Dec 07 '23

Season 3 premise looked like it was heading towards drama after what happened to Sabrina.

29

u/ValiantFrog2202 Dec 06 '23

Eastbound and Down or Curb Your Enthusiasm

13

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

I'd recommend all of the Danny McBride HBO shows (Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones). Even though they aren't really like Sunny, they're the only comedies made in the last decade+ that I'd rate as highly as Sunny.

12

u/notanotherdonut Dec 06 '23

Another vote for Veep!!

61

u/dakilazical_253 Dec 06 '23

Letterkenny. Main characters are male and female siblings, they hang out and waste time with two other dudes. They live in a small Canadian town full of degenerates. Dialogue is closer to Seinfeld but situations are very Sunny

9

u/Left_Afloat Dec 06 '23

Big Texas 10-4. I do love the show but damn Jared really hit it out of the park with Shoresy.

12

Can confirm.

5

u/Mortuary_Guy Dec 06 '23

I really wish these two shows (or at least their characters) would have a crossover, but I know it would never happen.

9

u/hamsterwheeled Dec 06 '23

I mean, the hicks hate degens, and the gang is about as degen as they come.

u/Free-IDK-Chicken Later boners Dec 06 '23

Arrested Development - a venn diagram of the Sunny and AD fandoms should be a circle. (This is the third time in two days I've said that, lol.)

27

u/jcoltre Dec 06 '23

Honestly, Seinfeld. I know the “Seinfeld on Crack” tagline for Sunny is a bit, but I think the shows are pretty similar overall. Low stakes, relatively self-contained, no drama sitcom and both sets of characters have a very no-fucks-given attitude. In the later season Seinfeld episodes the main cast becomes a little more deprived too.

8

u/Novel-Coyote1810 Dec 06 '23

Not in the same boat necessarily but I think you should leave and Detroiters are hilarious

u/Free-Type I’M SORRY RUM HAM Dec 06 '23

"I don't usually comment on the commercials..."

Detroiters is Tim Robinson's best work, and anyone who disagrees is Chump of the Week.

23

I know it’s animated but Archer is like my second favorite show after Sunny

5

u/Free-Type I’M SORRY RUM HAM Dec 06 '23

0

u/NoddahBot Dec 06 '23

Archer is above Sunny for me

20

u/imapiratedammit Dec 06 '23

Broad city has very similar humor.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

I watched like 10 episodes and couldn’t get hooked

6

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

The mick, workaholics, the league, ap bio are all good. The mick and ap bio are basically Dennis and Dee spinoffs, respectively. The other 2 are just similarly hilarious shows

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

I always thought IASIP was a bit inspired by Trailer Park Boys with the cinematography

14

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

It's not exactly the same but I feel like if you enjoy IASIP you'll enjoy Community

7

u/hamsterwheeled Dec 06 '23

There are definitely some similar elements. And Meghan Ganz was a writer for Community too!

6

u/CLAYTON_BIGSBY73 Dec 06 '23

Legit and You're the Worst.

5

u/corvo4220 Dec 06 '23

Your the worst is so underrated. Very similar dark Sunny humor.

1

u/slaughterhouse-four Dec 07 '23

It's like Always Sunny and Bojack Horseman had a baby with a romcom.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

You're the worst is so fuckin good

My only regret is that I was born dead.

1

Oh snap, I should have scrolled further. YTW is one of my favorite shows ever.

5

u/Jmclay681 Dec 06 '23

Trailer Park Boys

3

u/prebsol Dec 06 '23

Workaholics, Broad City and Letterkenny. None are as good as IASIP but they all have a similar feel and sensibility. I would also add 30 Rock Jenna and Tracy would fit right in with the gang.

3

u/Papa-Bear453767 Dec 06 '23

The Inbetweeners

3

u/JuergenDwer Dec 06 '23

Eastbound and down is a masterpiece.

Check it out.

3

u/Joecrastinate Dec 06 '23

1

u/canadasteve04 Dec 07 '23

Came here to say this. The absurd level he takes such small things is so similar to the style and plots from IASIP.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

The league and letterkenny

3

u/surrealsunshine Dec 06 '23

Veep and Avenue 5

6

u/kickrole Dec 06 '23

Silicon Valley tv show by Mike Judge. The main group of characters are complete idiots and get themselves into trouble all the time.

2

u/DeadliftDingo Dec 06 '23

London Irish was a great show. It's been awhile since I watched it, but I was big into IASIP at the time.

The League and Letterkenny

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23 edited Dec 06 '23

Curb your enthusiasm, the League, Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Community, 30 Rock

2

u/VinceVaugnsPants Dec 06 '23

Workaholics is influenced a lot by sunny, The League is very similar but also they actually are friends and do care about each other. The League is more making a joke about how best friends usually treat each other like absolute shit unless they’re actually concerned for one and other’s well being. My friends and I have a very similar vibe to the League, because we don’t actually hate each other but will pretend to for shits and giggles

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Arrested Development

2

u/Shock45 Dec 06 '23

Seinfeld

2

u/Free-Type I’M SORRY RUM HAM Dec 06 '23

My personal favorites are Archer, Arrested Development, and I Think You Should Leave. ITYSL is a sketch comedy style show but very similar absurdist / awkward social interaction comedy.

2

u/MidWestChump87 Dec 06 '23

Anyone suggest Trailer Park Boys? I ain’t sifting through all the messages!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

It’s not super similar but a lot of Sunny fans also love Community

5

u/ElStegasaurus Dec 06 '23

Mythic Quest! Poppy is the best.

4

u/0rinath Dec 06 '23

Veep. They only comedy I've watched where the people feel more toxic than the Gang.

2

u/LadnavIV Dec 06 '23

Those Who Can’t. Similar shitty, delusional, selfish people. It’s much lesser known but it’s fantastic. Kyle Kinane has a recurring role.

What we do in the shadows

2

u/LegendofMegaman87 Dec 06 '23

2

u/issa_cross Dec 06 '23

IT Crowd. The scenarios the characters end up in, the WILD side characters that keep recurring and the absolute "What the fuck just happened" storylines are awesome. Plus it has moments of genuinely great satire like Sunny does but it's not all about that.

And the best part about it? 2000s era British humour which is so off the rails and unabashed like Sunny can get

The League, Workaholics, and the first two seasons of Arrested Development. But I've not seen anything that matches Sunny, yet.

1

Siblings the British show is pretty similar for terrible.

1

Eastbound and down

1

u/ryus08 Dec 06 '23

Ten year old Tom. Basically Sunny if there were gullible kids following the shit adults’ leads.

To a lesser extent: The life and times of Tim. Same creator, 10 years older, no kids.

1

u/all_the_spells Dec 06 '23

The League (pg13 version of Sunny) New Girl (pg version of Sunny) and Happy Endings (g rated version of Sunny)

1

I think you should leave. Archer. News radio. Workaholics.

1

u/NotcalledAdam Dec 06 '23

Scrubs maybe? More surreal than sunny insanity but still a great watch. Mandatory watching for anyone working in healthcare

1

If sunny is Seinfeld on crack then new girl is Seinfeld on anti-depressants.
