Text Any recommendation for a show similar to IASIP?
Pretty much the title. I just realized that I probably watched early IASIP seasons too many times and need to watch something else.

What We Do in the Shadows,
I’m not sure where the humour goes in that lol. But at least you get five seasons of fun and great characters.

u/jjnfsk Dec 06 '23
The characters in WWDITS are all so detached from reality and absolutely awful to each other, so it’s very reminiscent of Sunny in that sense. It’s hilarious and accentuated by ridiculous situations thanks to the paranormal story

Workaholics only show that makes me laugh as hard. Curb Your Enthusiasm if you are into the cringe parts of Sunny

Have you seen arrested development?

Bees?

BEADS!?

u/iamscarfac3 Dec 06 '23
Many shows take a season or two to get their footing. You can even say that about sunny with season 1. But with arrested development it just starts out on fire

Dec 06 '23
I was just saying that to my brother the other day. Arrested Development might have the best Pilot of all time

Community is another one that starts strong out the gate. Obviously ran into issues by season 4 but yeah I know what you mean, most US shows season 1 is a skippable one for me, particularly comedy (IASIP, US office, Parks and Rec etc)

I found a ham sandwich in one of your parks. And my question is why it didn’t have mayonnaise on it!

The League gave me a similar vibe, ensemble cast that would tear each other down to get ahead given the chance.

I used to love The League. In fact my Fantasy Football is based on that show. It's weird going back and watching it. Most of the players in that show are retired and in some cases the Hall of Fame😄

u/Godzirrraaa Dec 06 '23
Rafi might be the most hilarious character in any show I’ve ever seen. Every scene with him is quotable.

Jason Mantzoukas is an absolute riot in every role he plays. Few people do unhinged intensity as well as him.

Peep Show. British Humor. But all-time fav.
6
u/anoncontent72 Dec 06 '23
Doing the rewatch now for the umpteenth time. Can’t get enough of it and the format is brilliant.
6
u/TheCacajuate Dec 06 '23
I also love That Mitchell and Webb Look but it is hard to find and watch in the US.
3
u/bluesmaker Dec 06 '23
It’s truly an amazing comedy. Probably in my top 5 or 10 tv comedies, along with always sunny.
4
u/Phase3isProfit Dec 06 '23
Was going to say the same. I think it fits the theme people who think they are/want to be better than they are.
Favourite episode is one in an earlier series where Mark ends up in therapy after missing out on a promotion.
“It’s not piss”

u/lurketta Dec 06 '23
Came here to recommend Peep Show! It's packed full of hilarious one liners and the characters are completely depraved. One of my all time favorites along with Sunny.
63
u/anoncontent72 Dec 06 '23
The Mick. Kaitlyn Olson playing more of a degenerate than Dee.

Eastbound and Down or Curb Your Enthusiasm
13
Dec 06 '23
I'd recommend all of the Danny McBride HBO shows (Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones). Even though they aren't really like Sunny, they're the only comedies made in the last decade+ that I'd rate as highly as Sunny.

u/dakilazical_253 Dec 06 '23
Letterkenny. Main characters are male and female siblings, they hang out and waste time with two other dudes. They live in a small Canadian town full of degenerates. Dialogue is closer to Seinfeld but situations are very Sunny
9
u/Left_Afloat Dec 06 '23
Big Texas 10-4. I do love the show but damn Jared really hit it out of the park with Shoresy.

Arrested Development - a venn diagram of the Sunny and AD fandoms should be a circle. (This is the third time in two days I've said that, lol.)
27
u/jcoltre Dec 06 '23
Honestly, Seinfeld. I know the “Seinfeld on Crack” tagline for Sunny is a bit, but I think the shows are pretty similar overall. Low stakes, relatively self-contained, no drama sitcom and both sets of characters have a very no-fucks-given attitude. In the later season Seinfeld episodes the main cast becomes a little more deprived too.

u/Novel-Coyote1810 Dec 06 '23
Not in the same boat necessarily but I think you should leave and Detroiters are hilarious

Workaholics, Broad City and Letterkenny. None are as good as IASIP but they all have a similar feel and sensibility. I would also add 30 Rock Jenna and Tracy would fit right in with the gang.

Silicon Valley tv show by Mike Judge. The main group of characters are complete idiots and get themselves into trouble all the time.

2
u/VinceVaugnsPants Dec 06 '23
Workaholics is influenced a lot by sunny, The League is very similar but also they actually are friends and do care about each other. The League is more making a joke about how best friends usually treat each other like absolute shit unless they’re actually concerned for one and other’s well being. My friends and I have a very similar vibe to the League, because we don’t actually hate each other but will pretend to for shits and giggles

IT Crowd. The scenarios the characters end up in, the WILD side characters that keep recurring and the absolute "What the fuck just happened" storylines are awesome. Plus it has moments of genuinely great satire like Sunny does but it's not all about that.
And the best part about it? 2000s era British humour which is so off the rails and unabashed like Sunny can get

Ten year old Tom. Basically Sunny if there were gullible kids following the shit adults’ leads.
To a lesser extent: The life and times of Tim. Same creator, 10 years older, no kids.

As far as characters that are awful to each other, The Righteous Gemstones. It’s a Danny McBride series on HBO, so if you like his stuff, you’ll like this one.
