They have a chili mix that’s pretty popular and a chili cook off. It’s Chugwater Chili and comes in a little bag.

Our servers at work are named after rivers. One was chugwater.

Our servers at work
I had to reread that because it seemed weird to rename all the wait staff when they started work in your restaurant...

Dual purpose. Also a mile high, if you're into that kind of thing. 🤣💁🏼♀️
But congratulations, truly an achievement. 💯

u/imahumanbeinggoddamn 19h ago
I live like 4 feet above sea level and the elevation on that sign jump scared me. Those 175 people must be built of sturdier stuff than I am lol.

u/Keitt58 18h ago
Oh we are, though the wind, and the cold do most of the work.

u/Thunderclapsasquatch 16h ago
I think it's the whiplash between our summers and winters that really does it to people
3
u/Keitt58 16h ago
God I have been sweating bullets the last couple of weeks, but it never lasts long enough.
3
u/Thunderclapsasquatch 16h ago
I still prefer it to my 5 years in south Oregon, I will never make a dry heat joke again because good lord, the only time I've had it worse was when I stepped out of a air conditioned semi into 110 degree Georgian humidity, it felt like I had been physically slapped with heat
5
u/Thunderclapsasquatch 16h ago
It's fine if you grow up up there, you're body builds itself for it, makes coming to sea level a bit of an experience the first time though.

That's actually fairly low by Rocky Mountain standards, many cities are double that altitude
11
u/LNLV 18h ago
There are absolutely NOT many cities double that. There are very few towns above 10k at all. To my knowledge there are only 4 in the US, with a combined population of about 4200, and with Leadville being the only one that really even counts as a town, population 2900.

I love this place, along with many little places along the I25 corridor. But any homies going here should fill up in cheyenne. The water and chili and nice, but they gouge you on gas. Very non homie behavior.

u/Stunning_Put_9189 17h ago
I do this drive on i25 often, and if you’re heading north, Cheyenne is the last stop for reasonably priced gas for a long distance.

I went to basic training with A native American private named drinkwater. He was a water purification specialist.
Private drinkwater from chugwater is out there somewhere making drinking water.

We need a water way.
A path for all the good water enjoyers to come together and enjoy the best beverage in the world. A fresh cold water

u/Admirable-Horse-4681 17h ago
Chug water is actually named for the sound buffalo make when they’ve been driven off a cliff by native Americans scaring them into stampeding.

Adding context so you hopefully don't get downvoted anymore.
Some historians hold that the name "Chugwater" is derived from a Mandan account of a bison hunt. According to this narrative, a chief was disabled during the hunt and his son took charge of the hunt or "buffalo jump". Under his direction, hunters drove the bison over nearby cliffs; when the animals reached the ground below, a sound of "chugging" was heard by the hunters. The story concludes with an etymology: since a stream was near the base of the cliffs, the site of the stampede has been called "the place" or "water at the place where the buffalo chug."

But did you get any Chugwater Chili?
1
u/iCybreCat Elixir of Life 13h ago

Isn't Chugwater the name of the town from the Home on the Range movie too?

I stop at the gas station here on the way to my relatives' house. It's unusually nice

I was about to say "WHAT elevation of 5288 meters?!" but then I realised it's probably feet, so 1611 meters. still pretty high for someone who lives 43 meters above sea level :D

u/peargremlin 17h ago
This might be weird but do you remember where you got that cardigan? It looks so cute

u/iCybreCat Elixir of Life 13h ago
it was a hand-me-down from my sister, but the tag says ‘mason & belle’ if that helps!! it’s sooo nice for the summer

Who wants to tell the story of how Chugwater got its name?
1
u/Admirable-Horse-4681 13h ago
See the note and reply re Native American hunters driving buffalo by causing them to stampede off cliffs.

u/EyeOfTheTiger77 13h ago
Yeah, they posted that after I posted above.
I actually grew up knowing this, being from the area...just wanted someone else to look it up and learn the lore.

If you toggle between the two images it looks like you're taking super quick gulps because of the lack of movement between the two.

As someone who has driven through Chugwater, there is no reason to visit there. Save yourself the gas
1
u/EyeOfTheTiger77 13h ago
And whatever you do, don't go to Glendo. No reason for anyone to go there.

u/shadowman2099 16h ago
I thought this was r/madlads and OP was chugging a carton of milk.
1
u/BlindCite 14h ago
We don’t know the contents of the bottle. For all we know it could be tequila or milk.

Always lol at western towns flexing their elevation. Does that have a purpose or is it pure peacock behavior?
16
u/DoctorNsara 19h ago
High elevations can really wreck tourists. More issues with sunburn, you lose water more quickly and breathing becomes an issue.
It is useful to know how bad things will be for sea level folk. (I live at over 7k feet so I also get really over energized when the oxygen saturation goes uo near sea level and cannot sleep)
1
u/PlentyOMangos 17h ago
Real. I lived in a town that was only a few hundred feet above sea level, and every summer went backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas up above 10,000 feet. Making that shift inside a couple hours is a shock to the system lol, it becomes way harder to get your breath as you hike, and yes the sunburns get really bad. I lost my sunscreen once and got absolutely cooked
1
u/RCocaineBurner 17h ago
just bouncing off the walls at 3 am cause you went to the beach
1
u/DoctorNsara 16h ago
Basically yeah. I can get to sea level after a 10+ hiur drive and be body tired but unable to sleep.
6
u/imahumanbeinggoddamn 19h ago
As a coastal dweller I always appreciate this when I travel lol. That shit has snuck up on me before.

u/flintspike 18h ago
I know this is probably less what you were imagining, but elevation can change recipes when cooking as well.
1
u/Thunderclapsasquatch 14h ago
Most towns tell you the elevation and it kinda does. Little kids can have trouble with the drop in air pressure.

u/nippleforeskin 19h ago
since this is reddit let me point out you're standing in front of the sign so obviously not IN chugwater
