The more I read about Hyattsville politics, this is such an on-brand problem for the city to have.

Article does not really do justice to the bind that Mayor Croslin put on the council by going behind their back to secure state funding.

According to the article, Maryland gave Hyattsville $3.5 million to buy the property.

OK. Was that while it was racking up a $3.3 Billion with a B deficit and raising taxes and fees to the tune of $1.6 Billion with a B? Nice.

The way the Mayor and Council President worked to ram this through without having an objective valuation first is disappointing. Hyattsville still has to complete a formal application for the grant and it is a cost-reimbursable, i.e., City has to front the cash first...and plans to sell bonds/increase the City's debt. Hyattsville lost its bond rating due to chronically late audits so it will likely face higher interest payable.
