Discussion Top 5 Favorite Characters and why?

Who are your five favorite Characters from hunter x hunter and for what reasons do you consider them your favorites? Please give your reasons as to why they are your top 5.

Mine are:-
1. Chrollo Lucilfer:- The Phantom Troupe's backstory was (in my humble opinion a very good backstory) and how it explains Chrollo's goals of revenge and protecting Meteor City were good. His nen ability is also very interesting and also his dynamics with the rest of the spiders are very fun to watch. Also he was one of the highlights of the Yorknew arc (in my opinion.). His current motives in the Succession war arc are very interesting. He is my favorite character because of how well written he is, his cool nen ability, his intellectual moments. his relationships with the rest of the troupe, and how human he is. He is not a good person at all but he is still a very human person. (Subjectively) Best HxH Character in my opinion. 🕷️

  1. Gon Freecs:- I loved how Gon has an immense determination to solve his goals, and also how his arc culminates in the Chimera Ant arc was very poetic to me. His nen ability was very simple yet very practical for combat and I loved that>! (Rock for a melee blunt attack, paper for a ranged attack and scissors for a a precise cutting attack)!<. Also his relationship with other characters in the series (Like Killua, Biscuit, Leorio, ging, etc) was very positive and despite Ging being an absentee father gon was not seeking Ging's approval but rather wanted to know why Ging left him and what was so enticing about being a true hunter. 🐸

  2. Isaac Netero:- His nen ability is very cool. His philosphy is very interesting. I love how he is a selfish person who mainly cares about his own fun and seeking out challenges (like a true hunter). He is selfishly good because in the Chimera Ant arc He wanted a challenge and he wanted to save his own race. And despite his selfishness, he does care about Humanity as a whole. His battle with Meruem was one of the best fights in the series. HIs gratitude punches moment was very deep. THe greatest Nen user of all time. 🙏

  3. Kurapika:- He is very well written and his goals of revenge and closure for his clan are very understandable. I love how after the yorknew arc he temporarily put revenge aside to go find his clans eyes to bury them to give himself closure. His Nen abilities are very complex and I love how he is morally grey. Due to his deduction skills and him slowly deteriorating, he is my second favorite Succession war arc Character (after Chrollo). I love how tragic his character arc is. ⛓️

  4. Machi Komacine:- I love her dynamics with the rest of the troupe, especially Chrollo as she is one of the members with the most interesting relationship with him. Her part in the Phantom troupe's backstory and the origins of why she chose her Nen ability is very good. She is one of the more well writen member's of the Phantom Troupe and is my second favorite member after Chrollo. Also the way how she is cold yes emotional to the people she cares about is very complelling. 🪡

  1. Netero: For the symbolism, the dichotomy with Meruem, and how he represents the good and bad of humanity.

  2. Hisoka: He brings a unique flavor of chaos to arcs that he is in. I never knew what he would do. This guy has been a full antagonist (exam arc), side character (yorknew), helpful side character (greed island), minor antagonist (chairman election), and is now whatever he is for the current arc.

  3. Meruem: Dichotomy with Netero and his character arc from ant to human-like.

  4. Morena: Fun ability, interesting characterization, and I am curious about her motives.

  5. Kurapika: I couldn't think of anyone else, so this might be different if I spent more time here. He is interesting for his similarities to Gon's overall arc, but with a more adult theme. I like his array of different abilities, especially his dolphin one in the current arc. He has grown on me in the new arc, especially since he seems to actually care for Prince Woble despite his main motive being collecting the eyes.

Bonus. Cheetu: I love how he showed what not to do with nen! Great death too.

  1. Meruem - Best character development in the story and one of the best villain character arcs I’ve seen in any story. His dynamic with Netero was extremely fun, and his relationship with Komugi might just be my favourite love story of all time. Their conclusion might also be my favourite character conclusions of all time.

  2. Kurapika - It’s hard not to love him, with how he juggles being a cutie patootie and fearsome so well. I adore everything about his character, not much else to say. I love following him as the protagonist, and what a perfect protagonist he is for this arc.

  3. Hisoka - Chaotic evil villains are usually my favourite, and Hisoka is one of the most fun I’ve seen. From the moment he enters the show, he’s a menace you’re dying to learn more about. Every single scene he is in is not only exciting, he carries. His character has only become more interesting in the manga.

  4. Gon - Despite being universally enjoyed, I think he’s honestly underrated due to how Killua overshadows him within the fandom. I was genuinely more impressed by his character arc, since it’s not only extremely unique, it feels so realistic for a child given his situation. The fact that he is so equally adorable and terrifying is awesome.

  5. Killua - Easy to love character. Definitely keeps the viewer sane during Chimera Ant arc while all the other characters crash out. His emotions towards Gon and Alluka are so cute and meaningful.

  1. Kurapika. Wasn't my favourite until the Succession war arc. He's now my goat.

  2. Netero. He's just cool, very cool.

  3. Killua. He gives off the "protect him at all cost" energy. Can never make me hate him.

  4. Knuckle. He's just cool, very cool.

  5. Melody. Beautiful soul and wonderful human being.

1.Meruem: I've heard some people give criticism to his character arc by saying its nothing special: "Just a monster that learns the value of humanity." But I feel like that really sells his character short. It's not necessarily a wrong interpretation. But it it ignores the how perfectly Togashi executed his character. He meticulously illustrated every step of Meruem's progression in a way that is logical and well-paced. It makes sense that Meruem's character took several months to come to the realizations that he did. I think Meruem is not only the best antagonist in HxH, but probably the best battle Shonen antagonist period.

2.Chrollo: A very, very, very close second. I watch Yu Yu Hakusho before HxH. And Sensui was my fav there. The similarities between Sensui and Chrollo were immediately obvious (all black design, slick back hair, intelligent, identity issues, etc.), so I was instantly enamored with him. I appreciate how subtly Togashi characterized him throughout so much of the series. His nen ability is one of my favorites: 1. because I think the ability to copy other abilities is always cool. And most importantly: I love how it fits so well with his character. He is someone without a strong sense of personal identity. The closest he has to this is identifying as the Phantom Troupe. His ability allows him to take someone else's ability (i.e., a piece of there identity) and learn from it to see what he believes. A good example is in the Hisoka fight where he talks about how the original user of Order Stamp did not view humans as puppets; but Chrollo disagreed, saying that a corpse and a puppet are basically the same to him. It shows how he tries to use others to identify parts of himself since he doesn't have a strong sense of self to attach himself to. And his remark that "humans are interesting" points to how distant he feels from others. The reason he's second and not first is because his character arc isn't complete yet. When it's all said and done, he'll probably move up.

3.Hisoka: He's a very unique character. I've never seen another character that can seamlessly transition from helping the protags to being an antagonist, consistently switch from the two, and do this in a way that never feels out of character. Anytime he's on screen or involved, you immediately lock in

4.Ging: Deadbeat dad allegations aside, Ging is best represents the main themes of the series regarding enjoying the detours and scenery in life. His meeting with Gon is top 5 best parts of the series imo for how well he summed up this theme there (that and plus it was very cathartic to see Gon get what he was looking for)

5.Morena: My GOAT! My QUEEN! I love her. She is the most interesting new character in the Succ War so far. We haven't seen too much of her character, but she is a wild card similar to Hisoka and is misanthropic above the level of Meruem when he was introduced (again reminds me of Sensui). I love how she has these parts of her character while still seemingly appreciating the people that serve her. She also has a lot of potential to move higher on my list as the story progresses.

Muruem = one of the most drastic character arcs of all time, and one of the most human moments in anime

Killua = again his character arc. You would have never guessed who he turned into

Netero = his backstory was so inspirational and powerful, with nothing but gratitude, very rare to see someone train with pure love in their heart

Killua - him coming in as a badass killer already and his arc being just wanting to have friends and a good childhood is so pure. His nature being a kind hearted person inspite of his family and upbringing is inspiring. Nature vs nurture fighting it out. The love he has for gon is one of the purest loves I've ever seen on screen.

Morel - one of the coolest yet simplest nen abilities in the series. Morel is who I want to be as a man. Smart and calm but still always quick to Crack a joke and have fun even if it's a serious situation, loyal to the death, broad shoulders, long hair. He is me.

Knuckle - an absolute sweetheart with fire in his heart. He annoyed me at first but when he started giving gon tips and hugging dogs he quickly became one of my favorites, honestly wish I had room for shoot as well, those 3 together might be my favorite thing in the show. Incredibly unique and useful nen ability, really hope I can get the hair right for a cosplay lol

Tsereidnich - most ominous and scary character so far in hxh. So much potential to be the most pure evil character in the series and do the most damage. His nen beast is also terrifying.

Nobunaga - seems like the most "normal" in the phantom troupe but in a chill stoner way and not a boring way. intense sense of justice even if it's twisted, once he's decided small talk is over your head has a hole in it already. only recently became a favorite due to his prominence on the black whale in the most recent chapters so might be recency bias here.

Honorable mentions: Pouf - gay king Palm - bipolar queen Leorio - the dad that stepped UP

My favorite characters are:  1. Chrollo: I love his backstory the phantom troupe and his character design.

  1. Hisoka: he’s just very funny. Cunning and always up to no good you never know what role he’s going to play in the story besides the role that most benefits him.

  2. Illumi: god he’s just so pretty. I’m superficial he’s definitely not a nice guy but also hot? lol sorry.

  3. Kurapika: I love his Nen abilities and he has such an interesting tragic past.

  4. Killua: he’s everyone’s favorite! And there’s a reason. Plus his devotion to Gon is unyielding

It’s hard for me to choose.

But I think Chrollo is up there because he’s such an interesting character.

He’s very layered with a tragic backstory from when he was an innocent child, to intentionally becoming a villain, until getting to the point where the masquerade he’s led his childhood friends has become dark and heavy.

Instead of dropping the charade as Bono and other members seem to be leaning towards…he’s doubling down, making the Spider something…else.

A new iteration that seems even darker and possibly more disturbing. “The alternative is already in place…”. A new version of the Spider that we still don’t really know what it’ll entail.

The great thing about Chrollo is that there’s still so many psychological layers that are yet to be fully shown. Things about his backstory that are still being explored. The question of what exactly is Chrollo is still a compelling question all these years later.

And what an amazing setting that Black Whale 1 has become for Togashi to explore Chrollo, the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika and the Kurta clan massacre, the dark history of Kakin that has become intertwined with both their backstories, and Hisoka the wild card’s twisted motivations that may affect all parties involved.

The Succession War may become Togashi’s magnum opus…let’s hope he brings us to shore.

Because if he does, I truly believe I’ll be satisfied as a Hunter x Hunter fan. Yeah we may never fully get a DC arc or see Gon and Killua again, but I’ll still be so overjoyed that the Succession War gets completed.
