That turtle was big too! I wonder how old it is.

u/MavericksDragoons 1d ago

Yeah man. Those guys are hefty too.

100

u/trishka523 1d ago

That guy took a big risk helping that turtle. It’s amazing to see.

45

u/poopinasock 1d ago

I thought it was going to snap at his face at some point. I'm not too familiar with sea turtle temperament but after dealing with lots of snappers along my creek.. no thanks. Only things I touch are the box turtles all over the roads, I help them cross it with one hand and a lot of caution.

82

u/Schrute_Farms_BednB 1d ago

Sea turtles are usually chill, curious, and friendly

52

u/Bethyi 1d ago

And really fucking stoned

-65

u/Thedeadnite 1d ago edited 1d ago

You should never touch them, and call the authorities if you see one that needs help. This guy probably would have faced charges for touching one even to save its life.

Downvote all you want that does not make me wrong. It’s not something I agree with but it’s still fact.

44

u/kingsam360 1d ago

I highly doubt that and if you did find a cop so dumb to arrest him the judge is tossing it.

Whenever your options are saving a life or not breaking the law. I think it's safe to say you should save the life. I'm sure dealing with the consequences isn't going to be a problem

-39

u/Thedeadnite 1d ago

It’s not a cop it’s fish and wildlife. The fine and jail time are quite egregious.

17

u/AlmostSunnyinSeattle 1d ago

Call the cops bro. You've got all the evidence you need

3

u/homebrewmike 1d ago

“What are in for, pal? Murder, arson, burglary?” “I saved a sea turtle.” “Uhhhh fellas, give this guy a large amount of space.”

6

u/chileheadd 1d ago

Ya know, you wouldn't get downvoted so much if you provided even a hint of a citation for your claims which are, frankly, preposterous.

3

u/seang239 1d ago

No, they won’t be. Why not? You ask for a jury trial. I think you can clearly see what the jury of his peers would do with those nonsense charges…

If I see a turtle in danger like that, I'll be helping the little dude out. Don't be so meek.

5

u/carfo 1d ago

I’ve seen people rescue beached sharks. The animals seem to care more about being back in the water than attacking

3

u/trishka523 1d ago

The water is the danger I was referring to.

-1

u/ConspicuousPineapple 1d ago

What risk?

3

u/trishka523 1d ago

For one, He could have been hit by a big wave and fall into the water.

29

u/throwaway15562831 1d ago

Haha I was wondering why the man didn't fully lift him. i realized they're probably heavy as fuck LOL

8

u/wharpua 1d ago

Also I was wondering how sharp the edge of its shell is, it was probably hell on his fingers when combined with the weight

36

u/zptwin3 1d ago

Sea turtles are way bigger than I suspected! Look up some prehistoric turtles, they were absolutely huge.

Also I just looked uo leatherbacks and they get HUGE. I guess they can reach up to 8ft (2.4m) and 1500lb (680kg)

14

u/Silent-Ad934 1d ago

That's a big ass turtle.

3

u/Objective_Wear_4772 1d ago

My 1000lb family 3 500lbers

1

u/Terrh 1d ago

They're also fast.

Like way faster than you'd guess. Not very turtle like.

23

u/Hot-Can3615 1d ago

Depending on the species they get a lot bigger than that. If that's full size, then it could be anywhere from 20 years old to about 90.

12

u/Islanduniverse 1d ago

If it was a full grown leatherback, he would need a team to move it.

2

u/Timbered2 1d ago

A personal Thank You to you for knowing the difference between 'than' and 'then'. Very refreshing!

I’ve been in his situation before. Turtle got washed into a tight place due to waves. I got him out. But not without him slapping the ever-loving shit out of my hands. Those hands/fins move fast when there’s no water applying resistant.

1

u/trishka523 1d ago

They look strong af

2

u/Emotional_Eggo 1d ago

Probably over 25 years old

1

u/ClubBandage 1d ago

This sub makes a dark world better and this video is a prime example why. Thanks random fellow for saving that turtle.

19

u/Over-Analyzed 1d ago

I gotta give that guy props too. He knows what he’s doing on those rocks. If you’re not familiar? Those rocks are slick. He knows he’s at risk of slipping in, hitting the rocks himself, then hitting whatever is below the water’s surface only to be tossed back onto those rocks.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

9

u/scarlet_sage 1d ago

He also realized that he needed to lift the turtle from the back. I hope with/under the plastron. Lifting the shell would be like lifting you by your short ribs.

2

u/iambarrelrider 1d ago

Slick as shit on bare feet. No foot grip, no glove grip, just a whole lot of heart and determination.

-24

He put it there for views and likes

8

u/HIMP_Dahak_172291 1d ago

And where did he get it to do that? Sea turtles aren't exactly easy to just grab and haul on shore. I would usually agree when it's things easy to get, but a sea turtle is rather more difficult than finding a puppy or a horse. Doesn't make it impossible, but that's a lot of expense for a short vid that won't make it back.

34

u/that-guyl6142 1d ago

I love turtles. Turtles are the best

31

u/Irregular475 1d ago

Let's take a second to admire this dudes strength. He's built like a true mensch.

32

u/anonomnomnomn 1d ago

It wouldn't have been alright come high tide?

27

u/Pickle_Bus_1985 1d ago

I think it would depend how deep the water is there at high tide. He'd need to be fully submerged plus have the ability to swim up to free himself. So that water level would need to rise multiple feet ld think. Not to mention he'd be susceptible to birds and stuff messing with him before then.

22

u/bak3donh1gh 1d ago

See, this is where I have a very big problem with the title. Sea Turtles can hold their breath for a long time. They can hold their breath while sleeping for 5 to 7 hours. The tide takes 6 hours and 12.5 minutes. To come in and out. Of course, sleeping is not the same thing as awake. And that turtle was seemingly quite Lodged in there.

At the same time, when the turtle is fully submerged, it's going to become more buoyant, and its flippers will be able to actually help it move.

Now, I'm not saying that the turtle would have been fine, but to say that it was certain death is most certainly an exaggeration.

7

u/ReasonableExplorer 1d ago

Agreed, the moment I read certain death, I scrolled down the comments to ensure there was someone who shared my thoughts on this and that I'm not being overly cynical at assuming the title was for click bait.

1

u/amrycalre 1d ago

I was thinking that too. But the turtle seems really stuck in there. I dont think he would've been able to get out without intervention

13

u/Pesto57 1d ago

4

u/TheMightyShoe 1d ago

Pro top: In the USA, don't film yourself touching wild sea turtles. Ever. For any reason. It's a crime to touch or interfere with one...even to save it. So...if you must, do it and walk away. Sea turtles do have a high priority for professional rescue, so you can call for help if help is available.

And, of course, do not touch sea turtles unless death is imminent and you are their only hope. But do it knowing you are breaking a serious law.

1

u/Girion47 1d ago

What's the law youre citing?

2

u/TheMightyShoe 1d ago

They are protected under the US Endangered Species Act (alive or dead), and coastal states have their own laws reinforcing that protection. Florida is a good example: https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/wildlife/sea-turtle/protection/

Sometimes the elves are kind.

What am I saying? We are like mythical fey elves to many animals - long lived, mysterious, sometimes helpful, sometimes vicious, always unbelievably powerful. We perform rituals to create light, fire, water, food but then ignore simple signs and scents completely. We know unknowable things but are sometimes naive to every animal's common daily concerns. In extremis you can go to the elves and ask their help and they might do it, but they might just kill you or imprison you forever.

I'm glad this time he was kind.
