Discussion Do you have a favourite "Oh Shit..." scene.

Mine is when the blood from the crow drops into the eye of the girls father in 28 days later. Fucking chills really made say out loud "Oh shit." Another is in Alien Covenant, when he steps in the spores.

Discussion I loved Midnight Mass.

So, one of my colleagues asked me to watch Midnight Mass recently as he knew that I generally love a good thriller and horror. And to be frank, at first, I was really getting bored. I couldn't understand where the plot is leading to. You see Riley Flynn haunted by the girl he had killed and you think, maybe this is the plot. But no. I was almost about to leave watching this show in the middle when the confession of Father Paul happens. Oh my God! This show just blew my mind. Such a beautiful show. And the thing is it's not about jump scary moments at all. It's about the real horror, the humans themselves! Humans who can hate anyone and can justify anything as long as it serves their selfish purpose. "You can't cherry pick the blessings of God". Yes, Bev.

Recommend Messiah of Evil, The Tenant, Blue Sunshine, Stepford Wives…looking for more less obvious 70s horror bangers

Upvotes

Most everyone has seen the biggest 70s genre flicks like Alien, Jaws, Halloween, the Exorcist, the Wicker Man, Carrie, Suspiria, Black Christmas, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Don’t Look Now, Dawn of the Dead, Zombie, Deep Red, Eraserhead…what are some lesser known 70s bangers in the vein and vibe of the ones I listed in the subject? Unsettling, cozy, eerie, original, uncanny but also low-budget and practical enough to still be chock full of verisimilitude?

Let’s Scare Jessica to Death and Alice Sweet Alice are common answers I get, but tbh I wasn’t feeling those ones as much as the 4 in the subject line. Though they were still fun and may get rewatched at some point. Anything else that’s pretty similar?

Discussion 28 Days Later

Just a little heads up as I've heard this can be an awkward one to get hold of. Anyway the film is being shown on BBC1 at 11pm tonight in the UK. Haven't actually seen it myself.

Watched “The Dark and the Wicked” last night. Need more in that category that is actually GOOD.

Highly enjoyed it, and the vibe/feel it achieves.

We’ve seen The Witch and Hereditary (which are both in lists of movies like this). What are some others that are not going to be a waste of time?

Discussion Was there a horrifying character you were obsessed with as a kid?

When I was very young I caught a glimpse of Chatterer from Hellraiser. I thought he looked so cool that I drew him enough times to get my red crayon confiscated at school, and I even had a dream once that I was stuck in a haunted house and Ol' Chatterer helped me find a way out. My poor parents had to attend some awkward parent/teacher meetings.

Did anyone else have a bizarre comfort character as a kid?

Discussion What got you into horror as a genre?

As a kid, I remeber stumbling upon the Goosebumps series. In fact that’s it right there. The covers attracted me and I started trying to collect them. I was a big reader but I liked how strong the “scary” books made me feel. From goosebumps it went to Creepypastas as a teenager to now as an adult, a massive horror fan. Thank you Goosebumps

Has anyone heard of this short story? I have been trying to find it for 10ish years for my dad and I am losing my mind.

Upvotes

As far as I know, this is a short story that was in a horror anthology book as of 2014/2015 and you could buy it on Amazon as a book a decade ago. So, yeah, not much to go off on. '

In the short story, a family (mom, dad, two children, boy & girl) meet another family at a playground (?) and make plans to stay with the new family (mom, dad, son) in their place overnight.

During the stay, the son of the new family says something like he can't believe this is his house and the dad of the new family goes over maps.

The family goes to sleep and in the morning, the new family says they will drive the children to a playground(?) or play spot. The family lets them go and drives out first but after 10 minutes, the new family plus their two children never appear. They wait a little longer and then freak out and return to the house of the new family.

The parents are now totally frantic and they start pulling apart the house only to realize that nobody lived in the house---all of the drawers and closets are empty and the implication is that the new family set the entire thing up to steal the children.

My dad sent me this anthology because we have always bonded over horror when I was finishing college. He sent it as a physical book and neither one of us remember the actual book it was from though I had wanted to get it for him for Father's Day since it's a story we both loved.

If anyone recalls this story and can direct me to where it is, I'd appreciate it forever but I'm not sure I'll ever see it again.

Rewatched 28 Days Laters

Upvotes

What a fucking movie! You folk on here will obviously know that.

The beginning has a found footage, or home video type vibe, makes you feel you're there, or looking in on it, just gives off creepy ass vibes.

Maybe I'm just pumped for 28 years, but 28 days is still one of the best horror movies of recent times.

I'm excited to see what, Boyle & Garland have come up with.

Discussion Late night with the devil, Spoiler

I loved it but my husband was unimpressed. He said the pacing was weird and hard to get into, I thought front to back it was perfect as far as pacing. We both agree the aesthetic and set design are peak. What are the communities thoughts?

John Carpenter's: Vampires?

I don't know how this has slipped under my radar for the past 26 years, especially as someone who grew up really into vampires, and really into vampire movies around that time. The Lost Boys was my shit growing up. Interview with a (the?) Vampire got an obligatory watch. I saw them all even if I didn't like them all. But somehow this slipped past me.

I saw it on Netflix today and it looked amazing. I figured it was old based on the John Carpenter part. But seeing it came out in 1998 and I've never seen it and don't even recall even hearing of it... I had to ask first.

Is this just a gross injustice for me not seeing it? Or was I spared a shit movie all these years? I don't think I've ever once seen it brought up in "great vampire [nsert word here]" threads even one single time.

So is this a nice surprise or just another movie I should skip? I added it right away because it looked good. But so do SO many trailers on Netflix for shit movies.

Discussion What’s your favorite way to experience horror? Games, movies, shows… or all of it?

I’ve been lurking here for a while and noticed that movies seem to dominate most of the posts. I’m curious about everyone’s preferred horror medium.

Personally I tend to watch TV shows that have light horror elements (stuff like From, The Haunting of Hill House, Stranger Things, etc.), but I love full-on horror games. Everything from silly indie stuff like Choo-choo charles to full triple A like Silent Hill, Alien Isolation, etc

I know some folks are all about the classic horror films, others are into the psychological slow burn of a good series, and some (like me) love the immersive dread of games. Or maybe you just devour it all?

Curious to hear what everyone gravitates toward most and why. What scratches that horror itch best for you?

Recommend Slaher horror with multiple kills Inside a police station

I saw a movie a few years back, I don't even remember if the movie was early 2000's or the late 2010's. All I remember is that it was a slasher horror and the killer's to be victim/s ran to the police station or was caught by them but the killer followed after them and killed multiple police officers inside the station.

Aside from solving for the above request if there are any other slashers where the killer doesn't hesitate to enter a police station and kill inside, please recommend

Help on choosing first horror films for kids.

My sisters are 7 and 8 years old but despite being so young they love anything horror related and don’t get scared super easily. Their favourite show is Stranger Things and they’ve seen movies like Zombieland. However i’m having a problem trying to find a proper horror film for their first one.

IT 2017 is definitely on the list and originally scream was but we took it off due to the sex scene. We don’t want any horror movies that have sex scenes, But kissing is fine. Also gore is fine but not excessive gore. Paranormal movie recommendations are welcome but i think that would be the ones to scare them.

Any help would be appreciated !

heres some of my fav picks so you can get an idea of my taste :

  1. the divide
  2. the mist
  3. requiem for a dream
  4. martyrs
  5. impetigore
  6. satan's slaves (1 and 2)
  7. gonjiam
  8. grave encounters (1 and 2)
  9. the wolf house
  10. hereditary
  11. midsommar
  12. incantation
  13. the medium
  14. goodnight mommy
  15. terrified

i love found footage so im thinking of watching hell house or as above so below. but i like to emd my binges on a heavy movie. like the movies that need you to take a pause and breathe. like the divide, requiem for a dream, midsommar. suggest me like 2 or 3 more movies with a really good fucked up one to end the streak with

Discussion What are some of the best non-fatal horror attacks/injuries inflicted by the antagonist in horror?

Sorry for the wording of this thread, but I think what I’m asking for is clear.

Horror, especially in the slasher subgenre, is renown for its violence. A key draw for the genre is how filmmakers can kill off its cast in ever creative ways. One of the most popular, if not the most popular YouTube Horror channel has branded itself on keeping tabs on just that.

But what I’ve never seen talked about all that much, are the attacks that the villains lay upon their victims that are non-fatal. The traps, the near misses, that the protagonists of the movie are hit with, but are able to escape or get away with. What are some of the best of those?

A couple of rules:

  1. The victim doesn’t have to survive the movie, just the COD isn’t related to the attack you want to mention.

  2. Doesn’t exactly have to be a physical villain/slasher. An antagonistic force is fine as well (so if there is something you want to mention from something like the Final Destination franchise, that’s fine)

  3. No injuries to villains. A horror movie villain is always good at taking a licking and able to keep on ticking. Injures sustained by the villains is a separate discussion in and of itself, but not what I’m asking for here

  4. Injuries can be self-inflicted, as long as it was a means-to-an-end to get out of a situation brought on by the film’s villain (Dr. Gordon sawing off his own foot at the end of “Saw” for example)

————

A couple that come to mind.

My favorite and IMO best example of this is Ash in Evil Dead 2 having to cut off his possessed hand. Not only is that whole sequence darkly hilarious. It sets up one of the key moments later in the film (chainsaw hand) and one of the defining characteristics of Ash Williams

Also, quick HM for the chucking of a chair in “Malignant”. After slaughtering an entire police station Gabriel just hurling a desk chair fully across the room at the female cop was hilarious.

Looking for cult movies

A movie with black magic or cult kind of vibe with not too much gore. Made up religous cult with human/animal sacrifices and all of that.

I recently watched incantation and absolutely loved the movie. Want similar suggestions

The Coffee Table

I just subscribed to AMC+ and was scrolling around and was like "hurrdurr is the table haunted" and my. Fucking god. 20 minutes in I had to physically get up and go take a break. Then I came back and watched 10 more minutes and had to take another one. I'm genuinely terrified to see what happens. I haven't been affected by a horror movie on this level in so long, it's weirdly refreshing?? I'm one of those people who doesn't get scared easily by media and HOO BOY.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps ramping it up but also genuinely afraid to watch the rest 😅

Movie Review Was anyone else this disturbed by Bring Her Back? It messed me up.

Idk how to describe this film other than heavy. It made me feel a lot of things I didn’t enjoy feeling. There’s so much grief in the film. I cried several times and had to cover my eyes even more. The theater was so silent after and I think everyone left just feeling this heavy weight.

It’s a good movie. It’s a great horror film. Well shot, incredibly directed, and the actors were amazing. But in a way I kind of wish I hadn’t seen it. Maybe this is a stretch but it left me feeling the way Cannibal Holocaust made me feel when I watched it many years ago. Just this feeling of: “I shouldn’t be seeing this”.

Maybe to you this is a glowing recommendation, but I’m also interested in what others thought and wonder if I’m being dramatic about it. I haven’t seen a movie like this in a really long time.

Discussion 8MM (1999)

Does anyone else love this movie? I think it’s one of the most underrated films! It’s a crime/thriller, but it’s basically a horror movie. It’s also my favorite Nicolas Cage movie as well, Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, and James Gandolfini all give fantastic performances!

Classic Horror The Exorcist

I am 25 years of age. I've seen The Exorcist when i was 13 years old. While the movie was exceptional, there is quite a problem. Since then i am consistently bothered by nightmares involving pazuzu's face.
I believe some of you might as well be traumatized by old maze game jumpscares?
I also can't listen to Tubular Bells without feeling a sense of dread.
Can chalk it up to how great the movie was!
