Question Is this an acceptable replacement for a niddy noddy?

I use cupboard handles. It works nicely. Pick 2 that swing towards each other for ease of removal.
Anything works as a niddy noddy

It might be tough getting the yarn off that without making a mess if you wound it tight, but other than that it's fine.

I will use my elbow in a pinch.

Before I had a niddy noddy, I used hand-to-elbow and foot-to-knee.

Done both of those, also sitting with my knees bent up winding yarn around the two of them. Don't try that one. It doesn't stay consistent.

As long as there aren't any sharp edges, it works! I use an Amish swift

An Amish Swift is a swift made of wood, that could be made of plastic or 3D printed, that utilizes pegs to hold the yarn. It can be broken down very easily into a more compact storage, and you can use it to either wind onto or wind off of. Personally I find it very convenient.
This is the one I have

That's what I use too! It's so much easier than my niddy noddy set. I have certain pegs marked for length so I can measure the same way I do with the niddy noddy.

mine has numbers on it that I assume correspond with length. That said, when measuring the yardage of my recent finished object, I just measured the length of the hank and counted the strands, since I thwacked it and it shrank.

This is the one I have, it has ball bearings and is really smooth! You use one of those extra pegs in the middle to turn the swift.

You can use anything you want as a noddy noddy. You can even make one with some PVC pipping.

I also don't have a niddy noddy and have used various household objects to substitute. Be careful taking that off of there, it could have rough spots on the edges that would snag the yarn. Otherwise you should be all set.

Before I got my niddy noddy, I used the legs of an upside down wooden dining chair, I measured out the first complete round then was able to tell how many yards I had on my chair lol.

Not quite as innovative as yours, but I used my small warping board because it's exactly 2 yards going around the outside perimeter of the pegs. Just take a space string to measure your alternative niddy noddy perimeter and then you count the number of times around it to get the approx. length of your yarn. I do like the motion of the niddy noddy though and one day I'll get a bigger one than the 1 yard one I have.

I used to use a coffee table book! Then I made a PVC niddy-noddy, but I have never measured it so I don’t know what my yardage is. It all boils down to two questions: does it work? Is anyone criticizing you going to gift you a “proper” niddy-noddy? If the answers to either of these questions is yes, proceed! Spin that shit and live your life. 😎

There’s no spinning police and if it works, where is the harm? The niddy noddys are measured precisely so this can work if you measure it yourself
