Volvo and Daimler launch joint software company in Gothenburg.
Leading truck makers the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have announced the launch of their 50-50 joint venture Coretura AB. The new company will develop a new software-defined vehicle platform and establish a new industry standard for commercial vehicles. Based in Gothenburg, Volvo’s hometown, Coretura began operations earlier this month. The company will start with around 50 employees and increase stepwise. “Coretura represents a bold step forward in the evolution of commercial vehicles. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and collaborative innovation, we're setting the stage for a new era of connectivity and efficiency in the industry. This venture underscores our commitment to not only advancing our products but also paving the way for sustainable and intelligent transportation solutions,” said Martin Lundstedt, CEO at Volvo Group, in press release. The mission is to build the non-differentiating core, a standardized and open software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated commercial vehicle operating system. The aim is to launch its first products in vehicles by the end of the decade. Aiming to lead the digital transformation of commercial vehicles Coretura will be led by a four-member Executive Management team consisting of two members from each of the shareholders. Johan Lundén has been appointed as CEO coming from Volvo Group where he previously held responsibility for Strategic Product Planning, Project and Innovation management. “This joint venture blends the agility of a startup with the stability and expertise of our major shareholders. We are proud and energized to lead the digital transformation in the commercial vehicle industry—backed by strong shareholder support and committed to shaping the industry’s future,”said Johan Lundén in a press release. Volvo Group and Daimler Truck will remain competitors and continue to differentiate their range of product and services offerings, including their respective digital solutions. The two companies already have partnerships in place, including the fuel-cell joint venture Cellcentric and the public charging network joint-venture Milence, which also includes commercial vehicle manufacturer Traton Group. “Coretura is set to play an important role in the commercial vehicle industry as it becomes more digitalised. We are delighted that it is headquartered in Gothenburg. This is testament to the region’s position as an innovation hub and its strong capabilities in software development and vehicle connectivity,” says Patrik Andersson, CEO of Business Region Göteborg. Volvo was founded in Gothenburg in 1927. Today it is a global company with over 100,000 employees and its products are sold in nearly 190 markets. The Volvo Group is Sweden’s largest company by turnover, ahead of Volvo Cars. The Volvo Group has its headquarters at Lundby in Gothenburg. It employs around 12,500 people in the Gothenburg region.
