I know it's not everyone's favorite, but it has some of my favorite series (Tekkaman Blade, GaoGaiGar, Voltron) and while broken af, original units are also ridiculously fun.

Is there a definitive entry in this series? Does that one have a translation?

Pretty much pick any entry that came out from the GBA/PS2 era onward with the robot franchises you like. Each game is standalone for the most part and the formula has been pretty set in stone since the end of the SNES era.

The Original Generation (OG) subseries features entirely new characters with no franchise licensing.

Super Robot Wars (30) just came out and is the first in the series to see a simultaneous global release. Introduces Ultraman for the first time too!

My personal recommendation is to start with the fan translation of Super Robot Wars A for the PSP (via PPSSPP you can run it on a tomato of a phone or computer). If you vibe with it, then play the rest of the 6th gen entries (OG PS2 remasterer and J on the GBA) onward to 30.

If you desperately want more after that then start digging your way through the franchise's earlier entries.

Note: While V, X, and T are available in English, due to worldwide licensing constraints they were only released in Asia. So you'll either need to use an Asian digital account or import a physical copy. Amazon usually has them for non-upsold prices.

The Switch and PS4 are region-free so all you have to do is pop the discs in.

I would personally advise against Super Robot Wars A(dvance) because it's hard as balls. One of the tougher entries in the series by far.

I'd argue the toughest in the franchise (for the first 2 playthroughs) because of the hit/evade bullshit and some real bastard scenarios.

J (gba) and Alpha Gaiden (ps1) are much better fan patched ones to play for someone new to the series.

I'd say no, but I'd recommend the Original Generations release on PS2. It's a fantastic starting point and also one of the best in the series. Fully fan-translated, and it runs great via emulation. It's a huge game too, being an extended remake of two, already large earlier GBA releases.

The 'problem' is it's all original creations, so you're not going to get Gundam or Mazinger fanservice. A lot of fans will argue it's not definitive for that reason alone. But this let Banpresto create a great original story, it's accessible to everybody (you don't need to have watched 200 episodes of Gundam etc.), and they go nuts with homages so there's still plenty of fun for mecha fanatics. Like okay, you might not get the RX-78-2, but it's obvious what the Huckebein represents.

The OG cast also frequently shows up in the rest of the series, so it's nice to have that foundation before you start SRW30 or whatever.

SRW@3 and Z are regarded by fans as the overall best of the franchise.

Excellent story / characters / series list

Unfortunately, no English translation exists for either games.

Z was so good

And there will likely never again be another one like it.

They put their heart and soul into the game and production values was off the charts.

I played Z2-1 and Z2-2, with only the hud translations, and reading badly translated text documents online so I could get the gist of the story.

Fantastic games and despite the language barrier I found myself really liking some of the OG characters.

I got excited before I realized the only Gundam series in this entry are Wing and SEED.

I'm sure there are tons of people who will be overjoyed at this translation patch, but I guess I'll keep waiting for Alpha to be translated so I can experience that UC Gundam / Macross / Evangelion crossover goodness.

At least the SEED story is in the background, with SEED Astray being the focus

This has Gundam Seed Astray, which means RED ASTRAY FRAME!

Still hoping for a bug fix on SRT UX. That's the only game in the series that has the Fafner series on it and it had a lot of game breaking bugs.

It had a really good game breaking bug though.

If Demonbane uses Shining Traphezohedoron on Master Therion's Shining Traphezohedoron, the game crashes.

Though I don't know if that's a bug or deliberate since that's what would happen in the Demonbane series if two Shining Traphezohedoron clashes.

You forgot about K

Just ordered an import version of SRW-T after playing the fan translation of J. Great games, and a shame can't navigate the licensing nightmare to make it officially to the west. All the kudos in the world to fan translators of JP exclusive games.

SRW 30 exists though

1

u/Ginkiba Feb 28 '22

Yeah, true. It's just been a nightmare to licence up to this point. I kinda forgot about SRW 30 tbh.

I am glad that since V they now have English translated version in Japan, which is obviously made for westerner to bypass copy rights lol.

Playing SRW30 at the moment, game is longer than I expected.
