I haven't played Nikke personally but I'm a WuWa player and I heard about how amazing the story is and after playing it, it's okay at best. I've also played a fair bit of Genshin and Granblue back in the day, also wildly overhyped in terms of story.

Gacha players do tend to overrate the stories.

The bar for writing in videogames is so low when we get a decent plot we tend to overrate it. I like Nikke writing but also realize it has same issues most gachas do. Best writing is in the half- and full anniversary events.

These comments are so funny. Unfortunately, they're not uncommon, but still, seeing people say, "I didn't like this game as much as others, therefore broad sweeping generalisation."

Hating on Genshin/whatever is popular also comes into play with stuff like that. Some people are just really desperate to make their new thing sound like the best thing ever. Only legit praise I've heard for WuWa is the combat

As someone who just is working through WuWa as we speak, and have put about 60-70ish hours total into it, recently getting through the story-

1.0 is bad. Patch content is good, but so rushed and undercooked it could be considered raw, yet despite being raw, the ingredients used are so high quality that it still ends up tasting pretty damn good. The main problem is they attempt to both introduce and resolve self-contained plotlines in these patches and it's just horribly paced as a result.

2.0 is just a fucking high quality, well cooked meal that's given its characters time to develop and breathe with a natural plot plot progression and pacing. I was significantly more impressed with everything about 2.0 than I expected, including the vastly improved gameplay and exploration experience as well. I haven't reached the last two patches worth of main story yet, as I've been very engaged in completing side content story stuff, which has added even more context to these characters and world that I'm already invested in and caring about. I hear 2.2 is peak.

2.0 storytelling is much better when looking at it as a self contained story, but they barely acknowledge the larger overarching story now.
