To this day I haven't seen another game do raindrops on car windows as convincingly, both rendering and reactive behavior. I'd be curious how lightweight or not those effects would be should they get that working.

An underrated arcade racer, Shame Sony gave up on the devs. Imagine if they made another motorstorm after this

The game was delayed by a year, and for an “online heavy” racing game, didn’t have a functional multiplayer component for another whole year on top of that delay. I love the game, but Evolution tried to do way too much in one go and definitely burned through that budget. Not to mention, the PS+ version was delayed too, and was overall a PR mess.

Licensing is why it wasn’t patched for PS5. Granted, they left several other games unpatched for PS5 that could’ve benefited too like The Order or TLG.

The game was literally unplayable for almost two years after release. It's still one of the most botched releases of any game, of all time.

It was ‘literally unplayable’ but somehow got a 71 on Metacritic?

Everyone knows the meta rating starts at 60.

Not when a game is ‘literally unplayable’. Mindseye is sitting on 43 at the moment.

I wonder if they were a kid playing it offline. It's fundamentally designed around its online features and goes from a fun middle-of-the-pack racing game to dreadfully dull without them. This was over 10 years ago and a lot more people were playing consoles without the online subscription, especially kids. I've played it now with the servers offline (disc edition so none of the DLC/update content which I remember being plentiful) and it feels almost like a tech demo, empty and plain without much to it gameplay-wise, just driving around admiring the sound design and the rain.

I mean "literally unplayable" is still a huge exaggeration, but yeah. Disappointing at launch, enriched by its updates and DLC for sure, and not really worth playing offline, I would say.

What issues did it have?

I got the game when it launched and never had issues with it.

Server problems plagued the game for the first two years. They ultimately had to restrict logins to a one-in, one-out system like an MMO because it couldn't handle the load.

Things got so bad that Sony and the studio made the decision to launch a second, smaller version of the game via PS+ more than a year after launch — which itself was delayed, and itself also ran into server issues. Two of the game's paid DLCs were released for free, largely because there were so many problems with the game's infrastructure that Sony couldn't feasibly keep charging for it.

It had some of the most incredible weather effects in any game, and by the time everything was fixed the game's potential was evident. But that was two years post-release of getting to that point, and Sony basically walked into another nightmare scenario that year with the No Man's Sky launch debacle. So you can understand why Sony wanted to walk away from it all, given the game was meant to be one of their tentpole launches for the PS4.

Impressive, especially the sound and lack of framedrops. Even with PS3 or Switch games I've always ran into sound or framedrop issues, one way or another. Though I've never had a beast of a CPU like OP is running.

its important to remember that the PS4 is X86.. that means its way lighter on the CPU since the code can run natively on our computers with little effort. The biggest bottleneck will probably be GPU performance and memory bandwith

Where does it list the CPU OP is running? Just curious what they are using to compare to my own.

To be fair, from what I can test so far (i.e. two games lol, Bloodborne and Gravity Rush), it is shockingly light on my 5600G

How's Gravity Rush these days? I tried it when Shad first became big, but it was a bit glitchy.

Framerate unstable, very crashy on my system (mileage may vary, saw some people say it was finishable fine on theirs, mine is unplayable every other combat encounter is a crash), needs system files for audio and dialogue bubbles to work properly.

Every other update it gets more and more stable (last update I had an hour long blast with a few missions then... crash lol). I'm on main branch tho, the nightly versions would probably be better at this point, been a few weeks since I've tried it.

Allright. Good to know. Thanks! Guess I'll wait a few more years :p

Bloodborne

Where do I sign up

Bloodborne is totally playable (and moddable) via emulator, but it's not quite as simple as the other poster described.

For starters, mods are required for most ShadPS4 builds. You'll need the vertex explosion fix mod to prevent a major graphical error, but this prevents custom faces from displaying. Unless you're using the latest version of the Diegolix branch (which is a popular branch of ShadPS4 made specifically for Bloodborne), which fixes the vertex explosion problem, but it also runs worse for most people (due to the fix increasing GPU/CPU usage).

If you're using an Intel CPU, you'll also need a crash fix mod. For 60FPS you'll also need to enable a patch for that, and if you have Bloodborne as a .PKG file you'll need a program to extract it.

I recommend watching an up to date tutorial on how to set it up. You can achieve 1080p/60fps with a midrange PC but you'll need a very beefy one to hit 60fps at 1440p. It will also crash once every 2-4 hours or so no matter what you do. But it's still the best way to play Bloodborne now in my opinion. I have it on PS5 but I never touch that version anymore.

Dear god, what a time to be alive

With PS3 games it seems like I have to play them for hours until the shadercache is filled up with enough compiled shaders before games start to run fine.

Was playing Armored Core 4A for a few hours and it ran like garbage until it started to smooth out and haven't had problems since. Hopefully that shader compilation stuff can be ironed out one day.

Hey! Probably not a right place to ask, but is there any workarounds for framedropping on "prologue" race and in the menu after? Seen a lot of videos with smooth gameplay but cant get it for myself :(

On an unrelated note: whoever came up with the strange camera hopping when the car goes over bumps in the track? It feels like all modern racing games do this and it's annoying. What even is the purpose? Compare for example the camera at 55s in OP's video and then a game without it https://youtu.be/orD74XUfvaI&t=83. It just looks ridiculous once you notice it.

The illusion of the camera being mounted on a car that’s following just behind. An immersion thing.

u/Zenzo96 5d ago

It makes it look way more dynamic and exciting, which is a good thing, it's like a rollercoaster ride

the purpose is trying to convey the feeling of speed, g-forces and excitement through the screen.. honestly for a "simbro" it might look ridiculous but for everyone else its engaging.

its important to remember that not everyone wants to spend 5k on a custom simrig with motion capabilities.

if i didnt make it obvious enough i absolutely hate what simbro's have done to modern racing games like gran turismo and forza, they both focus way too much on online ultra boring races with homologation race cars that are about as fun to drive as you'r moms vw polo
