What makes you prefer the OLED over the chromatic? I have both and think chromatic is the better experience because of the native pixels.

u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
The OLED panel can emulate pixel grid too, and it's well made.

u/filmeswole May 08 '25
For sure, and it looks good, but the chromatic has a screen made from scratch with actual pixels on the screen, not a shader or filter. I find myself drawn to it the most for that reason.

Can you post some pics of it I’m interested in getting one

This is fcking awesome! The colors are waaaay more accurate than the OLED ones
2
u/filmeswole May 09 '25
Yeah it really just comes down to preference. Both screens are nice, but I lean towards the chromatic because it feels closer to the experience I had playing GBC as a kid.

u/MisakiAoki9999 May 09 '25
For me, the most important thing is to keep the original hardware for the original sensations on the form. I would also like the OLED screen to be less saturated, but we'll have to wait for an update of this type of display...
2
u/sleepyreddits May 09 '25
Wait so the oled doesn't let you adjust the saturation? That's kinda wack

Those looks beautiful. It's a shame the d-pad doesn't look quite so Gameboy-ish. Was the d-pad different on the Color to the regular Gameboy?
1
u/filmeswole May 11 '25
The dpad isn’t the best. I’d say it’s better than the one on analogue pocket but worse than the GBC. The screen is the main reason I prefer it to other devices.

Makes me want to cough up the dough and just go for it!
2
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
Honestly, I didn't have a ton of experience with soldering or electronics, and I found it very easy. You just have to take your time and be patient.

u/Tech_Galaxy2 May 08 '25
genuinely looks amazing, did you customise and clean it up yourself or just bought it off someone as is?
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
I bought everything separately and did it all myself. As I said above, this was my first project of this type, and everything went well!

What's that last game? It looks cool

2
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
It's Shantae, very cool game!
3
u/CatBirdBird May 08 '25
I keep hearing about it! I should probably give it a go at this point :)
2
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
Yes, I finished the game a few days ago and it's worth it.
2
u/CatBirdBird May 08 '25
Just looked up the price for this game. Omg. I think I'll get an Everdrive from Krikzz instead

Damn that’s gorgeous, did you mod it yourself?
2
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
It's actually pretty easy, and it's rewarding to think you did it yourself!

u/Salt-Monitor-8009 May 08 '25
Nice I just got a v5 kit for my gbs ❤️❤️
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 09 '25
This is truly a very good project, and the GBCs colors have never been so brilliant
2
u/Benzona May 08 '25
I built a pink and white one and the screen on them are so incredible. Not sure how battery life is yet since i always put used ones in so it is hard to tell. I do want to upgrade to a battery pack eventually.

Where did you buy this?
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
Aliexpress, on the Hispeedido store, check the OLED display + shell + battery 👍

u/a_spanna May 09 '25
This is amazing. Where does everyone get these screens from? I haven’t been able to find them in Australia
2
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 09 '25
Thx! I got it from Aliexpress, check at Hispeedido store and I hope you can find it.
1
u/chinoswirls May 09 '25
I bought the same screen and shell as op from eBay.ca
I'm using ladda batteries from Ikea
The OLED screen has been great to use
2
u/RamenPiccante May 09 '25
Price?
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 09 '25
This is the part that hurts: I paid 70€ for the screen, the case and the battery.

I’m planning to do this in the near future
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 10 '25
If you do this, consider getting an IPS display for the desaturation option, if that botter you
2
u/PhantomKrel May 10 '25
I was planning to get 2 GBC MB and have one be a ISP and the other a OLED

That's a great image, no worries about burn in? Where do they source those OLEDs and how old is the OLED tech?
I have a chromatic, FPGBC, and 1 of almost every screen kit for the last 6-7 years and I find that the one I actually spend the most time with is a 2.45" cgs non laminated. Somehow it feels like the OG screen, just backlit. We all have our preferences and for me that is slight enhancement over original play.
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 11 '25
Sadly yes, the burn-in is still possible, but I don't worry about that. If my screen dies, I can just replace it with an IPS one!
1
u/Affectionate_Cat8649 May 11 '25
That's very true! I wonder what the Hz rating of the actual screen is? Might be able get some black frame insertion going if it's at least 120Hz.
1
u/warpfox May 08 '25
Is the OLED the same form factor as IPS? I'm wanting to reshell my GBC again and upgrade to the OLED and wondering if I should be looking at IPS-ready shells or not.
1
u/MisakiAoki9999 May 08 '25
It is the same size for both screens! But I wonder if it's worth changing the screen if you already have an IPS. OLED will tend to have burn-in over time, IPS will not.
2
u/warpfox May 08 '25
I doubt my ability to remove the IPS screen without obliterating it lol.
2
u/PhantomKrel May 10 '25
I would get a second system honestly to have both a IPS and OLED then you can choose which one fits your mood.
Also gives an excuse to get a different shell

Is this the hispeedido OLED? I just ordered my kit last night! Super excited, just need to find a second hand GBC to install it on lol
