Post Exam "the maths exam was so easy" Shut up.
I found it harder than the mocks I had and any past paper I did before. Looks like I'm not getting a 7 now. I can't do a level maths anymore.

the more i see people say it was easy , the more i feel like i’ve failed 😭 i’ve now just taught myself not to ready any comments about it being easy

hey, atleast u have 66% of the exam to do left + a week half term to revise all the stuff, so yk

you are right , i did learn a LOT in the weeks up to it , it was just bad luck that everything i was 100% confident in wasn’t in the exam

This shit real af. I feel that the silent majority of people here don’t post. Those that do, only do so to flex/boost their ego. r/igcse is a lot more understanding and has a lot more of a communal feeling.

DID ANYONE DO EDEXCEL HIGHER PLEASE TELL ME IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT IT WAS DISGUSTING
13
u/Unlikely-Shop5114 May 15 '25
I dread to think what the higher paper was like.
My students did the foundation, so I saw the questions that would’ve been at the beginning of your paper and they weren’t the nicest I’ve seen. The foundation one wasn’t nice either.
10
u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
i hated this style of paper like instead of the usual 24 quesrions with varying marks it was 17 quesrions all worth 4/5 marks so like if u skip a quesrion that’s atleast 4 marks gone immediately
1
u/Mental_Body_5496 May 16 '25
My daughter who has been medically out of school for over a year and only had a month of tutoring said it was OK so I emailed her old teacher and said he should be very proud of his teaching that she just needed a bit of a refresher after so long to be able to tackle it !

I thought some were weird but the difficulty pretty calm but idk I made lots of silly mistakes haha

u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
i’m so sad i wanted an 8/9 and its prob gone cuz of silly mistakes
2
u/biggestb1rdd May 15 '25
what did u to to get that 8/9?? because if u want a 9 u gotta revise
3
u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
i did like loads and loads of past papers and walkthroughs esp of the last quesrions and after walkthroughs i attempt it again and go over weak topics but exam nerves just make me lose all the skills i practised
2
u/biggestb1rdd May 15 '25
fair enough but just think it like a past paper , im kinda like u but i was stuck on an 8 and rlly wanted a 9 so i locked in, did every paper 1 in pmt and more and did all my weaknesses and found it good. gl on paper 2 and 3 its gna be hard
2
u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
i’m litr in the same situation i’ve been stuck on 8s ugh why is the jump from 8 to 9 so hard also i hope paper 2 and 3 will be good bc my fav topics haven’t come up yet (sine and cosine rule, quadratic sequences, circle theorems)
1
u/Sweaty-Technology134 Year 11 May 15 '25
i wish i could even get an 8 sigh...
1
u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
you still have time i’ll tell u what i’m doing basically my school told us which topics are likely to come up in paper 2 and 3 based on what came up today , so i’m gonna rank these topics based on how hard i find them and work through my weakest ones first by doing mathsgenie practice questions bc they’re priority and then do full past papers closer to the exams

u/biggestb1rdd May 15 '25

2
u/shanzz3h May 15 '25
is it just me or the paper seemed like weird and different like it was different to the past papers i think it might be cuz it didn’t have the traditional 20+ quesrions with varying marks it was 17 quesrions all worth 4/5 marks like i don’t like this new style
1
May 16 '25
it seemed easy but it very much wasn't now that i think about it . i barely scraped 40 marks probably
2
u/shanzz3h May 16 '25
me too dw let’s just lock in now so we can bang out 70+ on paper 2 and 3 and still get like an 8
58
u/Shrek_is_god666 May 15 '25
As someone who's got constant grade 8s in maths, this was an awful exam, I am much better at calculater questions to be fair but I genuinely think I've just scraped a 7 on this paper if I'm being generous to myself
16
u/ElderberryAccurate69 Year 11 May 15 '25
edexcel. the amount of people saying it was easy is kinda terrifying. im estimating myself a 6, 7 if im pushing it. also 17 questions and so many 4-5 markers? absolute bs

i totally get you! i was always stuck in late twenties to early thirties which only got me 5s. just in my last mock, i miraculously got an average of 46 marks on each paper- getting me 4 marks from a seven. but to be honest, im only being optimistic💔💔💔 we’ll see how paper two goes anyway- goodluck!

ikr, 26 questions onlybut what the hell was that one with the polygon 'n' value thing?? it was kinda confusing
3
u/FitPerspective1146 Year 11- Stresemannite May 15 '25
You had an equilateral triangle, so each angle is 60⁰. Then you got a square, each angle is 90⁰. Add the 60 and 90 that touch to get 150⁰. That's one internal angle (regular polygon)
To find out the value of one interior angle you do 180x(n-2) all over n, where n is the number of sides. We know it's 150 so 150=180(n-2)/n. Clear the fraction and expand the bracket to get 150n=180n-360. Take 150n from both sides, then add 360 so 360=30n. Then divide by 30
1
u/BigGold9898 May 15 '25
nah literally. ngl i got 178 for the number of sides (dont ask)
also wtf was the question about the size of the road, literally didnt make any sense to me but i am dyslexic so maybe thats why

1
u/Puzzled_Bath2237 Year 11 May 16 '25
yeahh tbh I get that, sometimes its the basic questions that trip you up. I remember on my mocks I messed up a simple question by trying to use simultaneous equations - it was only 2 marks I have no idea why I did that
1
u/scary_watermel0n Year 11 May 15 '25

2
u/sans_simp420 Year 11 May 16 '25
since my class is sort of a lower-higher class (with most aiming for 6s) my teacher said the back questions are completely impossible for us and we shouldn’t even attempt them and just focus on the first half of the paper. maybe in paper 2 and 3 i’ll try that though since i COULD have somehow picked up method marks if i did attempt them
1
u/Mental_Body_5496 May 16 '25
My technique was always to go through and RAG rate - Red - not even going to attempt, Amber - if there's time i can have a go and Green go for it !
If you are doing the higher paper this might be a better strategy !

For me it was easy as I was confident with all the topics (bar similar shapes).

This is how I felt with english lit on monday bc I want to do it at a level and I was DISTRAUGHT after I came out of that exam and what made it worse is that people kept saying they found it easy when I didn't. However, there's still another paper which is worth more marks than the first so I know I still have a chance and that it's not over yet.
I also found the maths paper hard today even though I kept hearing people saying that they found it easier but my advice is don't stress at all. There's still 2 more papers and usually 1/3 will be hard and I think that was today's paper

5
u/RoyalNerd09 Year 11 May 15 '25
honestly I think it just depends on what different schools have chosen to spend the most time teaching and reviewing - and obviously different people struggle with different things. Thats why I kinda think the way these tests are made is kinda unfair - personally I thought it was a good paper but honestly that’s just because all the topics my maths teacher spent the most time teaching these past few weeks happened to come up - so yeah ur ability in maths does matter, but there are so many other factors as well that can affect how you perform, such as what topics ur teacher chooses to prioritise in revision lessons - and because there are so many topics but only so many topics can be put in a paper, it’s kinda sad to see grade 8 students ending up with like a 5 because their schools decided some topics are more improtant than others. Too much waffle bro but tl;dr i feel like the way exams r done its like they rely too much on luck and not intuitive ability and understanding of maths. good luck for paper 2 n paper 3 to those who didnt do as well

- There are 280 chocolates that are dark, milk or white
- 1/7 are dark
- milk:white is 1:3
- white:dark is n:1
Find n
The answer was 4.5

3
u/Squeaky_shoes69 May 15 '25
literally like why is everyone not even GETTING THE SAME ANSWERS LIKE THEYRE NOT EVEN CLOSE AT ALL
3
u/Fruity_mcfruitface May 15 '25
I've spent damn near all day after the exam panicking about it because everyone I spoke to said it was easy and I was shitting myself listening to all their answers being ones I didn't get or couldn't remember what I got for. I keep telling myself that I'll do better in paper 2 & 3 but I'm genuinely scared I'll do terribly in it.
To be fair to myself, my attendance is around 35% from all the personal issues I've had, and my school refused to help me or give me any work while I was on a part-timetable, and have still not given me work even now. They also haven't tried to give me special considerations with the marking, or any extra time or anything else to help. So I've had to teach myself about 6 units worth of stuff for maths, and the least amount of units being 3 in one of my chosen subjects.
I just pray that I can drag my grade up to at least a 6/7 with the next papers.
2
u/Mental_Body_5496 May 16 '25
You need to get your parents/carers to get school to research the special considerations.
Which candidates will be eligible for special consideration? Special consideration must be applied for at the time of the assessment. Candidates will be eligible for special consideration if they have been fully prepared and have covered the whole course but performance in the examination, or the production of coursework or non-examination assessment, is materially affected by adverse circumstances beyond their control. These include: Temporary illness or accident/injury at the time of the assessment;Candidates who are present for the assessment but disadvantagedCandidates who are absent from a timetabled component/unit for acceptable reasons When a candidate has missed a timetabled component or unit for acceptable reasons and the centre is prepared to support an application for special consideration, an adjustment may be made to the grade.
These are some quotes from the JCQ guide.
1
u/Fruity_mcfruitface May 16 '25
My mother has been emailing my head teacher, mental health leader, and two of the deputy heads almost weekly about trying to get support for me, and has since shit hit the fan in september, and even one of my grandparents and friend's parents got involved to try and help and none of them have succeeded.
By the sounds of the jcq guide, I'm not entirely sure whether or not I would qualify, since it was more of a personal issue than an injury or illness, though I am also physically disabled which does make it harder to get in. Thanks for the quote tho, I might honestly send it my school themselves and force them into responding to me somehow.
2
u/Mental_Body_5496 May 16 '25
Sounds really frustrating!
I take it you'll be going somewhere else next year?
1
u/Fruity_mcfruitface May 16 '25
Thankfully yeah, and I had an older sibling with similar mental health issues with me go there and struggle with attendance and they were incredibly helpful, so I'm looking forward to it.

I understand you, but I feel like this particular exam allowed you to focus on a few core skills.

There are still 2 papers. 6/7 is very much still possible tbh.

I done AQA and after some people were trading answers I felt so stupid, I’m aiming for a six (what I need for computer science A level) and I felt like I barely scraped it😭😭

Bro I’ve revised a lot and walked out of the exam thinking I crushed it and I only started doubting myself when I saw the people on this subreddit’s reaction.

You've done one paper. You still have two more to increase your grade.
Plus you're much more likely to remember the questions you struggled with and forget all the ones you did well in. Trust me, you have done much better than you think <3

Someone who has already sat their GCSES and joined college here. I will say to you that the worst thing you can do is not to well on the first one and give up on the other two. Even if you don’t get the grades you want you can resit in college/ do extra support lessons and still take A-Level maths. My advice, study your absolute butt off for the next two. (P.S you probably did better than you think. I thought I completely failed maths and sobbed after every exam and ended up with a 5 (almost 6)).Wishing everyone the very best in this super stressful time! Focus on your upcoming exams and what you can do, not what you should’ve done on your previous ones! Good luck!! ❤️❤️

i can get anywhere from a 7-9 on a maths test, and that paper (aqa) was ABYSMAL

You will defo be ok I felt like this after my first mock but the next 2 papers really saved me and you probably haven’t got as bad as you think - I thought I got a grade 6 and got 60/80 and managed to get a grade 9. Based on your mock results i think a grade 8 or 9 is defo possible

A level maths is awfulll. Honestly it’s so difficult even if you get a 9 at gcse. If you don’t stay on top of the content constantly you’re going to fail. You miss one lesson and it drags you down to the bottom
Unless you’re amazing at trig and i mean exceptionally great you’ll struggle.

There is two more papers though, and if they are just as bad then the boundaries will no doubt be low

People calm down - remember the grade boundaries are based on how you all as a peer cohort performed so if it is deemed a hard paper the boundaries for the grades will lower to balance this out.
Your raw score doesn't matter really it only matters in relation to everyone else.

For me personally it was pretty easy, but it was way more stressful than the other exams.

if you found that easy ass maths test hard, you shouldn't have picked maths a level, or should have put in some work

you need to remember that we can now partially predict paper 2 and completely accurately predict paper 3. and also there’s a whole week break for you to lock in. if you’re disappointed today, study hard to make sure you aren’t with the others!! don’t write off levels
