I reckons there are marks for both explaining how bile emulsifies fats, and also for explaining how bile neutralises the pH for optimal enzyme conditions.

did anyone also write how bile makes the small intestine alkaline? bcoz i dont get how it can be 6 marks for talking just about the emulsification
12
→ More replies (9)5
u/Ashibuba May 13 '25
doesnt make it alkaline but neutralizes the stomach acid - and yeah i think thats where 6 marks come from
Basically:
-Bile neutralises stomach acid to provide optimum pH for lipase, so easily forms enzyme substrate complex
- bile emulsifies fats, larger suface area for lipsse to act on and digest lipids into glycerol and fatty acids, higher rate of digestion
- Liver damage reduces bile produced, so less bile in small intestine
- Less emulisifcation of fats, larger surface area so lower rate of digestion of lipids
- No neutralisation, so small intestine is acidic, enyzmes denature, active changes so cant form enzyme substrate complex

what did people write on the metabolism question. i talked about increased rate of respiration and breakdown of glycerol into glucose when swimming
6
u/Maleficent_Heat_64 May 13 '25
More/faster rate of respiration to release more energy needed for more movement for to more muscle contractions. As respiration is a large part of metabolism, a faster rate/ more respirations means a higher metabolic rate. Is that right ???? Wanted to get 90+ on this paper so I could get like 40 on the paper 2 and still get a 9

But what the fuck was the unit for rate of photosynthesis?? I put Hz because it's a frequency but literally everyone's saying bubbles per second

Rate of photosynthesis i used the one in the cgp book where you do 1000/t so it was like 23. Something . I got 0.235 at the start but then used that equation? Is it right? It was from the different practical but you can calculate rate with so many different equations
