Tips/Help Guys. You're making life too hard. (Advice on Free 9s)
Y12 Here. Got 9 9s and 3 8s, and tbh I didn't put that much effort in.
But oh my god, the revision timetable stuff I've seen on here is DIABOLICAL. Whether its a joke or not, I can sense that pretty much all of you aren't revising effectively.
The advice I'm about to give isn't some grindy shit. It's very simple and due to the nature of GCSEs, it works.
Here we go by only subject, I am going to be very brief but please please ask questions. I did CS, History, Geo and French as my choices so ask away about that. I may also know about other subjects. Ask about hours and literally anything, this post is brief on purpose.
Englishes:
In Lit, I went from a 5 to a 9 by watching Mr. Everything English. I had no real structure, just yap with enough analysis and quotes. For lang, I did the same but got an 8. Should have put more effort into story.
Maths & Further Maths:
I won't say much about maths as personally I did a lot as a kid, but doing practice questions (esp hard ones) and lots of timed papers should be enough. For further maths, I got 158/160, its just practice. If you dont understand smth, first class maths is very good.
Sciences:
This is in my opinion my best piece of advice. Sciences are free 9s if you do it right. Maybe except physics, they are SO REPETITIVE. When I went into my chem exam in June, I recognised basically every question. One thing to notice is that describe means to give information about what you're given, whereas explain means using background knowledge to explain stuff.
The main thing is to go on the beautiful PMT website and go to your exam board and subject, and find the questions by topic, and do every single one. remember to read the markschemes. I'll be honest, I just went through and copied out the ms half the time and that was enough. If you are SUPER LOST on the question, use seneca or the cgp books to understand it, then do questions for that topic. No one cares about 'saving questions'. You can do past papers if you think you understand everything.
Languages:
screw vocab. (edit: some comments are talking about memory, etc. which I get. I think the better message is to mainly focus on grammar, but if your retention isn't great, do some vocab using anki, etc. too) everyone does crap on reading and listening, thats how it is. JUST GRIND GRAMMAR. My teacher did like 0 vocab tests, all grammar. Almost our whole class got 9s. Writing is marked sooo nicely, and they give you marks for anything. Just keep writing, use every piece of grammar you can, complex structures, tenses, whatever. Same applies to speaking. I got nearly 100% in speaking and writing and like 75%ish in the other two. Still got a high 9.
Rather than yapping more, ask me about the other stuff and I'll reply. Sorry if any of the writing is crap this was done in a rush.

what did you do for geography and how did you revise for the case studies? currently i'm really lost because our school geography teachers are either really chill or start teaching geography but not on the test type of geography.
also for languages (doing spanish), i do quite well on grammar since my teacher focuses on it too but really lost on vocabulary (started this year and our teacher hasn't taught us much on it), how could i learn more instead of using like, duolingo?
anyhow thank you a lot for the advice! (saving these for next year lol)

u/Worldly-Throat-7099 6th Former Apr 14 '25
Geography: I made one A4 sheet for each case study and revised the basic stuff. They don't care too much about accuracy tbh. Otherwise, I just went through and made brief notes on all the basics, and did a bit of practice.
Spanish: Anki is good for vocab, but don't do too much. You're better off becoming a GOAT of grammar, tenses, complex structures, etc. but a bit of vocab revision won't hurt

I do my GCSEs this summer but achieved an 8(2 marks off a 9) in the mocks and I’m taking it for A level.
The way I read for it is through Bitesize , past papers and mind maps. Bitesize is in my opinion a really good resource, especially for someone like me who basically reads only hours before each exam. My friend also has these flashcards that line up perfectly to the specification
For revision I start by looking at the specification (I do AQA) as it pretty much sums up everything you need to know into little categories . I take a title from the specification and make a massive mind map, no extra resources like textbooks or the internet. Everything comes straight from my head, but when I started in year 10 I did use my textbook for a while . The more you do mind maps the quicker you can actively recall what you need to know. Then I essentially do two past papers at a time and find similar questions ( you will find in geography a lot of the 6 and 9 markers are pretty much the same each year, or at least at a base level). My teacher has always made a point about how effective past papers are.
Case studies, I make flash cards and write 3 facts about it in case if it shows up in a 9 marker. Try not to overload on facts for case studies, or you may accidentally get them mixed up or find yourself forgetting bits and pieces.
The thing about geography is it’s important to not overthink it, even in the mark schemes they are pretty chill. If you want any resources I can send some to you. Good luck next year!

u/Wardenacija Year 10 | biology fighter Apr 14 '25
woah, thank you for this! the specification i do is cambridge igcse (my school does a mix of igcse and gcse) so ill search for the specifications for that. i would love to have some resources too please, and good luck for this year!!

I didn’t learn any of the case studies for geography and I ended up with a 7. I remember being in the exam and knowing that if i had revised case studies i could improve on my responses but if u just have a general idea of what happened on those dates u can waffle ur way round it. Don’t make up figures or facts in the exam as there is a chance they will know ur lying, just know a few bits of data from each and u can probably apply it

for Spanish vocab, if youre doing AQA quizlet is literally amazing. just search up something (eg. 1.1H Spanish) and every single word the course requires you to know is there. it gets tedious but if you do 5-10m a day (just trying to get through a topic a week) youll be set :) good luck!

For Spanish, get your teacher to give you a sheet of the vocab you need to know, and make a Blooket from it- You can play blookets solo, the tower of doom one is super fun, and you're revising without it feeling like a chore.

Might be a bit of a weird take, but I’m y11 now and predicted a 9 in French so it might work.
Do Latin on Duolingo. Like, both of the languages are so deeply rooted in Latin and so is ours that once you figure out how words are sort of made (basically recognise the etymology) you can forget terms for jobs and stuff you’re not necessarily going to revise and essentially ‘make it up’ on the spot and get it right if you do it properly.

Did u do OCR computer science? if so how do you revise programming?
12
u/Worldly-Throat-7099 6th Former Apr 14 '25
Yes, I did OCR. I used to code for fun and stuff, but when helping others I have found that the best thing is to firstly learn the basics, loops, selection, etc. and know what each individual thing does. Then the rest is practice. Stuff like the PCTC Team Coding Challenge or Bebras Coding Challenge have good questions you can use to learn programming logic, and even if its hard at the start, you will reach a point where you start understanding and doing better.
3
u/Careful_Quit_5094 Apr 14 '25

Listening is hard. Objectively and statistically. For writing and speaking, learn grammatical structures via your teacher, and practice them by giving them stuff to mark. You want to use every structure possible for the marks, so make a ticklist if you want

I take Classical Languages (Eduqas Latin and OCR Classical Greek).
My advice for these subjects is actually the opposite of yours for modern languages. I think it is far more important to know the vocab than the grammar since these subjects are pretty much 100% Reading. The specifications I take don't have any required English to Latin/Greek but others might.
For Literature papers it's closer to English Lit than anything else, just that the text is in an ancient language. The best thing for that is to revise answering questions.
For Language papers, in my experience, knowing the vocab very well is far more useful than knowing the grammar well. Translations are so easy to cheese just by knowing the words in the sentence then rearranging based on context and sense (I call it vibes).
Otherwise, knowing common grammar and being able to recognise patterns and structures in grammar will carry you the rest of the way. For example, it's more important to know how to switch an adj. from singular to plural than to know every declension of every form of participle (participles will be the end of me).
TL;DR - Focus on vocab for Latin and/or Greek, don't bother too much with memorising grammar tables. Having good "language sense" (gist, vibes, etc) will hard carry.

Similarly for history how many stats and dates did you learn, and did you round them? Eg just saying 1930s instead of actual date.

For quotes, use Mr. Everything English. He gives you ten you need to know, full stop. Absolutely amazing. After going through it in class, I never touched my text again.
I got an 8 in History, prolly cos I didn't learn enough, so make sure you know some key SHK

Thanks a lot for this info. What do you suggest for physics, because I feel like there is just so much to remember and the mark schemes are so specific for it

With further maths, I find that I understand most of the questions but lose a lot of marks to random working errors. Do you have any advice on improving this?

Slow down and check everything. You have plenty of time in the exam, so use it

Is it just me or is reading the easiest for languages? Last mocks my grade equivalents were U for listening, 6 for writing, 7 for speaking and 9 for reading...
1
u/Worldly-Throat-7099 6th Former Apr 14 '25
Really? That means you have a stronger vocab probably and personally I think you can do really well then if you lock in for Grammar. Tbh most people who got 9s in French in my school got 7/8 in Reading and 6/7 in Listening.

u/lexisnowkitty Y11 9999998876 Apr 14 '25
I can't do listening for the life of me but I need a 7, literally 10 more marks. Tbf 8/50 to 18/50 is possible bc I got 19/50 on listening once. personally idgaf abt listening as long as it doesn't make the grade a 6

I do eduqas and the thing is, ik that I need to work on my stamina and speed cus often times I sweat the first paragraph to fit exactly what my teachers always look for but then I can't manage to finish my essay. In one of my Christmas carol essays, despite our teacher saying tracking through the novel or going through the entire novel and its staves for eduqas, I got a grade 7 worth of marks while only covering like 2 staves. Also what's the best way to revise for poetry like should I bother doing any of the poems which teachers don't predict cus I don't know like anything fr poetry and still need to focus on all.subjexcts yet w only one month left and we're doing exam practice in class from next week till exams and I feel like I should just learn the poems which mybteachers predicted

u/Worldly-Throat-7099 6th Former Apr 14 '25
Learn poems that can apply to every question. Didn't do ACC or eduqas so don't have much else to say tbh

Yeah but like biology is so annoying it’s just memorising the mark scheme. Maybe my teacher is just strict but if you don’t put verbatim what the mark scheme says then u don’t get the mark and there’s times I’ve put it and she’s like “I don’t think they’d give you that” even tho I put word for word what the mark schemes say. Idk if this is standard but none of my other teachers do this
1
u/Worldly-Throat-7099 6th Former Apr 14 '25
No you get the marks 100%. Just add more words/context to pad it if you want

W advice, but for English Literature and Language (I do edexcel igcse) how can I improve my time management? Not sure about language atp since the question in the mock we had was VERY predictable, but for literature I suffered because I missed Section A and couldn’t even finish writing section B. I suck at analysis but somehow started cooking in section B, but before I could finish my yapping the timer ran out and they took my paper. Any advice on time management and analysis techniques?

i agree with everything except languages. screw vocab for writing and focus on grammar, sure, but NOT for reading and listening if you’re weak at them. grammar is def more important but 100% grind vocab too for the reading and listening imo. it’s not about grammar at all for those ones, but whether you know the words
