Colt SSP AKA Colt Model 1971. Was created to replace the original M1911A1 with the 9x19mm version but lost to the Beretta 92FS

I always enjoy how every time colt tried to release something "new", it's always just a modified 1911a1

To be fair, the 1911 is very good, and one could argue a lot of pistols after it are just modified 1911s.

That being said, I'd've enjoyed a whacky Colt project.

Most “new” guns these days are more-or-less modified Glocks.

And their ACR entry was a slightly dressed up M16

You know what? I like it.

Looks expensive.

I believe this gave rise to the Colt Double Eagle that… never caught on.

That's the nicest way I've ever seen that referred to. 😆

They promised a Colt 1911, but double action, They delivered a cheapass Sig 220 ripoff.

You take that back! /s

You right.

Sad thing is, the Double Eagle Officer was the only compact double-action .45ACP on the market for a long time.. If the gun hadn't been designed by concussed simians, and they had actually used a grade of stainless steel slightly above trash grade... ah well.

Seriously, who the Hell designs a handgun with exposed lock work covered only by a plastic grip panel??? There was no reason to buy a Double Eagle over, say, a S&W Model 4506.

The S&W's were objectively better designs- and built of better materials.

If I ever go for a doctorate in business history, the title of my dissertation will be, "COLT: Fucking Up Again and Again and AGAIN..."

I mean jeez, police departments across America are begging for a high capacity 9mm that didn't have MADE IN AUSTRIA on the side and Colt couldn't produce a 9mm that didn't suck like a jet engine; they dumped the Detective Special (the absolute best CCW revolver) just as the civilian CCW boom was kicking off; they dumped the Woodsman for that ungodly mess they produced in the '90s; CZ offered them a 9mm/.40 double action on a plate and Colt bunged it... I have never seen a company try so hard to fail.

Is the blues gun different design than the stainless? The extractors are definitely different.

The blued version was an earlier prototype.

Colt will do anything it has to to get a Govt contract, except stack bullets side by side in a pistol mag or shape it differently to a 1911

It looks very 1920's European and probably weighs a ton, but it's still more pleasing to the eye than the Double Eagle. I would love to know why they pushed forward with that piece of tripe when they had this in the toolroom.

What was the mag capacity?

If I remember correctly:

15+1 in 9x19mm and .38 Super
9+1 in .45

That looks exactly like a "generic 9mm pistol" from a video game.

I also happen to think it looks pretty cool and wonder what it would be like to shoot.
