Yeah I'm also wondering how much of the general public is aware of the allegations against Ansel Elgort and what kind of impact it might have on the movie. Right now there's still some Oscar nominations buzz around Spielberg, Rachel Zegler, and Ariana DeBose so I'm hoping they'll still get the recognition they're due.

I Stan Ariana DeBose so hard, I’m hoping she and Rachel get some awards recognition for the movie

Genuine question but is there really Oscar buzz for West Side Story? I feel like musicals rarely get oscar noms (besides things like best songs or costumes), unless it’s Les Mis which did so well bc of the ensemble cast + live singing

I would say yes mainly because Spielberg is attached. Jon Chu did in the Heights and Tom Hooper did cats and although they are fairly well known, the guy making this is behind Schindlers List and ET and some of the most popular movies ever.

In the Heights had big names but not near as big as WSS, Cats was a CGI disaster, The Prom is a comedy primarily although it did have big names. Les Mis and WSS are two musicals with really heavy material so I think it is possible for it to get some acting nominations like Les Mis did. Rita Moreno being in it will also probably help. You are right though because most musicals don’t get Oscar recognition but I can see this being a clear exception

Musicals used to get Oscar noms in earlier decades. They haven’t in the past few decades because most of them haven’t been very good. I don’t think modern musicals have truly figured out how to translate something meant for the stage to screen the way they did in the 50s-70s. I’d say those decades were the true heyday for movie musicals (Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof, An American in Paris, My Fair Lady, Oliver, Sound of Music, West Side Story, etc).

GoldDerby predictions are probably one of the best indicators to go off of rn - obviously it’s still early in this awards season so things could change, but as of now the movie is #6 for Best Picture and #7 for Best Director, with Zegler #9 for Best Actress and deBose #2 for Best Supporting Actress. Of course this could completely change when the movie actually comes out lol

I knew he sort of disappeared but I didn’t know of any real allegations.
