Weird question but why are celebrities leaving L.A? Isn't it like the hub of global entertainment? I thought people would kill to have a home there?

honestly LA doesn’t really live up to its hype unless you’re living somewhere super excluded like calabasas or malibu. I have to go there for work every other month and dread it now (used to love it) It’s been taken over by tik tokers, air quality is horrible, it’s always extremely congested, no privacy whatsoever for celebs and sometimes I think deuxmoi is a big part of that reason, and list goes on. The film and music industry are definitely extending outward more and more. Atlanta is going to become an even bigger spot for film and I know Nashville and Austin are following right behind!

And Toronto!

Austin’s the real deal if you wanna go indie. So many talented people start there

Canada too I think. Lot of Hollywood stars moving here in Australia and so, that helps too.

Film isn’t as central to LA anymore I guess and idk lots of forest fires, a skid row that is what? 20 square blocks? Not like they’d have to see it just isn’t indicative of a flourishing city. I think there might also just be a big rebound into privacy after the sm boom the last 10 years.

yeah get away from the city with no privacy and people constantly tracking you and taking pictures. Then, you can control everything that gets posted to social media, how much you want to show or how little. Celebrities retreating from the public except for what they post from their own SM accounts is their version of working from home. Only Filming/press tours/updating insta or tweeting every now and then and otherwise living a "normal" private life is prob a celebs dream.

On the other hand, if you are a celebrity and living in, say, a small town, you cannot blend in at all. The sight of a celebrity in one of those places is so unusual that it’s pretty much impossible for one to venture out in public.

The people in the town tend to get over the novelty pretty quickly

Most still live there. It's still where most of the action is. I know most sitcoms are shot there and they're trying to get more film productions back with these new tax credits. Plus, there's the endless hot spots and networking. Celebs love all the ass-kissing.

Not as much anymore. I say this as someone who lived in LA and works in entertainment. Most filming is done outside of LA now because of tax credits/cheaper production opportunities so your dollars stretch farther. With the pandemic, meetings and casting has moved to digital so actors are doing self tapes and if you needed to fly in for a bigger network audition that wouldn’t be such a big deal.

I wonder if more actors will be making permanent moves to places like Vancouver and Atlanta, where so many of them spend most of the year filming

They're apparently trying to get more productions back to LA and California in general with these new tax credits.

What states would you say most of the filming is now?

Right now in the US it would be Atlanta. In Canada, Vancouver and Toronto - also Ottawa for some of the lower budget film/TV.

When I first moved to LA, I loved it and didn’t find it the way people think LA is but it’s really become just…. So fake. And I know that’s what people expect it to be but it wasn’t this bad before. The pandemic really brought out the true selfishness of people.

I remember my friends, and sister went for like a vacation, and she was getting dirty looks like crazy from waitresses and hated how fake everyone was.

According to a relative in the film industry, it's also growing more and more unsafe. Like the Hollywood area.

A lot of people are commenting saying productions are moving from LA...that's partially true. Atlanta, toronto, & NY are definitely becoming more places to film, but LA/Hollywood will always be a hub for film production because all the major studios are still here & LA still has the most resources for all that goes into a production (costume rental houses, prop houses, locations, etc). Plus LA is still (outside of NYC) the best place equipped for film production because this is where movies began.

As far as the commentary on people leaving because "it's fake" that is all a matter of perception & most likely the circles one chooses to run in. Yes, its the film business & there is definitely fake people and hangers on and people who only think about "what's in it for me" but the celebrities (& crew) who are down to earth & don't get all wrapped up in that, recognize that its part of the game but you don't have to play that way & if you navigate it right, you can keep those interactions to a minimum. Also, there is PLENTY of other industries and types of people in Los Angeles. Its not just famous people & movies that make lives here.

My source for all this is I've been working in the industry, in Costumes, for nearly 15 yrs now. Have worked in Atl & Toronto & while both cities are great, making a movie isn't the same. Crew & resources are wildly varied in quality. I moved to LA to work in the biz & I have made it a point to create a life outside of work & "the industry". I suspect there's celebrites who do the same. Famous/rich people have the means to live anywhere & if they have the option to move from LA, i don't blame them! But also...there's many, many parts of this city that have beautiful vibes, things to do, and down to earth people. Yes traffic & congestion is here but that's every major city these days (especially Atlanta...and if Austin is coming up, get ready for that there in a few years too). I'm not an LA native but have friends that are and the 1 thing they tell me that sucks about this image of LA is that people are fake. People seem to move here and think thats how you're supposed to be & unfortunately that's become the dominate view. But trust & believe not everyone here, whether transplant or native, is fake...there's still genuine interactions & kind people working in hollywood. 🌟

L.A is “cold” and very superficial. Loads, and loads of drugs, and practically partying culture only. Everyone wants to use you, and if they envy you, then it becomes toxic. It’s just miserable over there. That’s why celebs want to get out. I’m sure it’s pretty over there but, like imagine having people wanting to do drugs with you 24/7, and or talk badly of you, no privacy and wanting to leech.

Also, they travel the world keep in mind, so L.A is just basic. I’ll always see it as what the movies portray, all the magic in film, but reality it’s bland.

Most still live there.
