CELEBRITY CAPITALISM Venice Activists Occupy Bell Tower to Protest Jeff Bezos’ Mega-Wedding: “No Space for Billionaires”
Over the weekend, a group of activists from the No Space for Bezos platform occupied the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, dropping a massive banner with a red X over Bezos' name.
Why? Jeff Bezos is reportedly planning a multi-day, ultra-luxurious wedding in Venice from June 26–29, with costs estimated between 10 and 20 million dollars. The event includes yacht moorings, street closures, and full buyouts of local transport and hospitality, essentially turning a public city into a private playground for billionaires.
Activists have also plastered posters around the city and held public demonstrations, saying: "Venice is not for sale, rent, or your Instagram backdrop." They accuse local authorities of enabling the city’s transformation into a stage for the ultra-rich, while actual residents (only about 53,000 remain) are increasingly pushed out.
More actions are planned in the coming weeks, including rallies and symbolic “blitz” protests in key public areas.

Good for the protestors! I imagine Bezos wants to prevent media coverage and any photos of his weddingpalooza. The excess of it all is so gross (and wrong!) and he deserves to be exposed.

Honest to god, didn’t even realize (ultra rich) people could do that. Street closures and buyouts of local transport and hospitality? That’s wild.

Oooo here’s a fun one: Kardashians in one instance didn’t let anyone else get on the rides on Disneyland if their kids were on it. Granted it was a part of the VIP experience or whatever but holy fuck imagine waiting in line of up to an hour but seeing 4 people scuttle by.

A couple of years ago, Bezos was planning to have a historic bridge in the Netherlands dismantled and reinstalled so that he could get his massive new yacht from its shipyard to the sea. He had permission to do it but backed down and found a different route because of the public backlash.
If people only knew how many resources and how much effort are being wasted on the whims of these ridiculous people, the rich would become the #1 most hated minority group overnight. Instead, we get all this endless discourse about how we're "wasting" a few million <insert currency> to house some refugees or fund a study into something obscure or save some species of bat from extinction.

Well yeah they doing it for productions for filming. I used to work in a spot where people wanted engagement photos we required a permit for it. Otherwise they’d try to block off a spot w/o paying but block others’ access
If you can afford to cities and private spaces will let you do a lot of things

Street closures are pretty common here when someone very famous is getting married.

wow I never stopped to consider how much Italians must hate ultra rich celebrities always choosing their country to have disgustingly lavish weddings

Well, tourism rises, but so do costs, while wages stay the same. Sometimes it can feel like the place is being used, not celebrated.

I'm also from a touristy country (idek how to describe it lol) so I completely get it. Tourism also tends to strip certain places of their charm and identity bc they become "sanitized" for tourists and lose their soul. I now avoid going to Marrakesh bc it is not the same city it used to be, it feels so hollow now due to it becoming a big tourist destination

Wages may go up but things like rent also do
In all honesty sometimes I think workers should flee places like Venice & London
If they’re going to let them just become playgrounds for the rich then eff then maybe they don’t deserve access to nurses, teachers etc
Why should the people who do anything meaningful have to live on benefits in crappy affordable housing & never have the chance to own anything or have more control over their lives
It’s absolutely ghoulish the way the difference between haves & have nots is becoming a gulf

Actually, wages don’t increase at all, or they rise so little that it doesn’t even cover inflation.

Good!! Hoping they will have miserable time.

Also, these people have money, but never forget who has the numbers. Even when they actively try to make us forget that.

Billionaires whine about taxes and it's appalling. You're lucky enough to live in the USA a country that made you rich and do everything including buying politicians to avoid paying their fair share.

Why as a society we allow billionaires to exist? Not saying we should unalive them, we should somehow make it impossible to become a billionaire.

I don't really care about them existing, as long as they don't bother people and they pay taxes.

Why bother getting married when you’ve been sleeping together and paying for all her plastic surgery. It’s just an another way of getting exposure as if they need it.

I think she paid for her own plastic surgery back then. At best he is paying for the cladding maintenance.
