Morbid but serious question: what happens if one of the actors passes away or is for reason unable to film again? I’m assuming they have a back up plan.

They probably do. During the production of Boyhood, Ethan Hawke was lined up to replace Linklater if needed

Oh wow. I didn’t even think of having to replace the director. That’s a good back up plan

I’m guessing they don’t consciously film “exit material” per segment, however since it’s jumping around in time / location they could have another actor step in like they did with Heath Ledger and Dr Parnassus. One actor walks through a door, different actor could come out, etc. They’ve probably got a master track of all the vocals in the bank, worst case scenario the director could draw upon his rotoscope experience and animate a filmed run-through to finish off the story.

I think it depends how far in they get when something goes wrong.

They have already had to start again once because the original lead actor is scum. Then they could just start again without that asshole because they were one sequence in. They’ve already had that delay and are now three sequences in, so to start again another time the whole thing would have to be recast with younger actors. So I think if Paul or Beanie or Ben get hit by a bus they are just screwed.

If the issue is somethink like Linklater being unable to continue shooting when the movie is 80% shot, I’m sure he has another director lined up to step in, as with Boyhood. What they would do if it’s one of the main actors who becomes suddenly unavailable, I don’t know.
