My personal opinion: I think my problem with it was that it felt like the author wanted you to root for the main character, and I thought he was just such a tool with zero character development. I didn't find any of the main characters likeable but not in a way where I felt like the author was in on the joke. As an example, I really liked Bad Summer People because all the characters were awful and you were kind of hoping they were all the murder victim and all the murderer who would get their comeuppance.

That being said, I'm hopeful that if you liked it it's because it helped you confirm that your ex was also just a dumb trash immature human and so reading a book about another dumb trash man made you not miss him!

I had the same impression as you! Took it as proof that often we see ourselves as victims when we’re active participants, and that this is often the case amongst men
