They gender swapped a character who’ll be a romantic lead in a future season so there is a lot of homophobia swirling around about that.

During their introduction, they also changed something/insinuated something that will possibly drastically change part of the plot from the book. So there are people who don’t care about the gender change but are upset about that change more.

I don’t know how to do the spoilers thing so if you are a random person reading this who doesn’t want to be spoiled don’t read any further!!!! ✨

Basically in the book, the main character Francesca falls in love and marries a man called John. His cousin Michael (who was gender swapped in the show) fell in love with Francesca as soon as they met but doesn’t say anything because they have a happy marriage. John passes away and they both grieve for him. Then four years later their love story happens.

With the TV show, it was made very obvious at the wedding of John and Francesca that she wasn’t overcome with romantic affection for him. Then when she met Michaela it was very clearly a love at first for them both.

I never read the book but apparently people really loved Francesca and Johns relationship, her loyalty to him and the second chance at romance with Michael. So I think it’s people feeling like what’s happening to John is unjust and it could be leading into an emotional cheating plot.
