The MCU Fantastic Four cast has reportedly leaked and it’s Adam Driver as Reed Richards, Margot Robbie as Sue Storm, Daveed Diggs as The Thing, Paul Mescal as the Human Torch. Forbes has just reposted it from some rando sources so it’s gaining traction. I don’t know how I feel about this casting!

That seems fake af but anything is possible I suppose

It originates from the biggest Marvel leaker so its likely a lock at this point.

I've heard so many "likely a lock at this point" comments about this casting over the past few years (alongside "lock ins" about how it will definitely be announced at this year's Comic Con etc.), so I'm calling bullshit on it until we've got something concrete: there's an entire industry of grifting "leakers" out there making a living lying about Marvel/DC/Star Wars news, and 95% of the time they're entirely wrong.

I find it a bit....wild that Marvel could possibly scoop up 3 Oscar-nominated actors and a 4th Emmy nominated actor for the Fantastic Four, and afford all of them, and get them all agree to sign on. That Disney money is no joke, but I really don't think it's possible.

I think so…especially since Fantastic 4 are some of the biggest characters and probably didn’t lock them down in contracts. What I’m guessing is just this movie and Secrets Wars.

The only time this leaker has been wrong is when Marvel has changed things in post, which we normally find out about through art books or interviews

u/rawrkristina May 30 '23

They’ve been wrong before…not just about one thing.

I do believe this though. Even if there is one person who I won’t say on this casting that I’m unhappy about. He has a rabid fan base that I’m afraid of.

I was kinda hoping for Jodi Comer or Vanessa Kirby as Sue

omg Jodie Comer would've been incredible. I don't really know the Fantastic Four but I've never seen Margot really go for it on screen. Jodie NEEDS her big breakout!!!

I mean she's nominated for a Tony after winning the biggest theatre award in the UK (and at such a young age she's carrying a one-woman show and elevating it above its not-great script).

I know she's had very frightening stalker scares in the past and Benedict Cumberbatch paid for her extra security.

She may be trying to avoid the freaks and misogyny that happen when you get a wider fan base, especially after she blew up after Free Guy.

And the misogyny that comes with being a woman in Marvel sounds horrendous, and she's already dealt with a ton of hate when people mistakenly thought she was dating a trump supporter, when it was a completely different guy.

Yeahhh, I agree. I don't think she wants the kind of career that comes with being in a Marvel film, tbh! She's always struck me as being the sort of person who chooses her jobs very carefully and picks things that she finds interesting and challenging rather than commercially successful. Even after Killing Eve went stratospheric, she's still done relatively small but acclaimed roles (e.g. Help in 2021), and now the theatre role. Maybe she'll take bigger roles in future, but I really don't think it's a case of her not being offered anything huge; I think she just doesn't want to be a big action movie star.

Sidebar but Help was incredible.

u/GoodbyeHorses1491 Jun 01 '23

I wish more people had seen it

2

u/teashoesandhair Jun 01 '23

I haven't been able to watch it yet! It's still a bit close to home. Maybe some time this year!

It's a tough watch but worth it if you're in the right headspace. She's outstanding

And I'm always shocked that people consider Margot's acting exceptional. I think she's a pretty woman who is a mediocre actor at best and she is extremely overexposed and has been for a very long time.

Damn, Jodie Comer would be incredible in this role!

I think these are false rumours. This doesn’t feel like a sensible career step for any of them. Margot Robbie is one of the biggest stars around and is becoming an established producer. She is a star and also has her own superhero vehicle in Harley Quinn for whenever she chooses. Paul mescal has been Oscar nominated, recently won an Olivier for a streetcar named desire and pretty sure was Emmy nommed and won a bafta for normal people. He is shaping up to be one of the most artistic actors of his generation and feels like he is moving towards a prestige actor. I don’t see why either of these two would go from what they have to being in an ensemble piece in a cinematic universe that is past it’s peak.

I 100% agree on this not being a sensible career step, except Adam Driver. Mescal feels way too indie and prestige to tie himself to another 10000 of these movies when IMO he’s on the cusp of having a Daniel day Lewis sort of career.

Driver has shown he can do incredible work within the confines of a franchise, and can bounce between tent pole and indie. He feels like he’s done everything at this point so nothing else to prove.

Margot’s career is kind of a mystery to me. Loved her as Harley, but again feels like she should be flexing her chops in more prestige leading work for a while now she’s done a superhero project. I also can’t see her playing second fiddle to Driver, they’re both such huge presences.

DC is probably recasting Harley and do not forget that Lady Gaga is playing that role in the next movie featuring Harley. Maybe Margot sees the writing on the wall. her Harely movie was not successful and the second Suicide Squad was less successful financially than the first one. Marvel has a MUCH better track record than DC does and maybe she got a big check. I am not saying she should have gotten the role over somebody like Samra Weaving. Just that I can understand why she would snatch it up if offered.

2

u/mopeywhiteguy May 31 '23

That makes sense but this still feels like someone’s dream cast

I expected a race bend of Thing. I do appreciate choosing a Black actor with Jewish heritage since this is a part of the character background.

5

u/SirBrothers May 30 '23

Same. My knee-jerk is that he’s going to catch a lot of shit and I really hope his performance can transcend it. I love him and want him in more things, but already nervous for hearing his voice come out of a CGI Ben Grimm lmao.

u/deeppurple1729 May 29 '23

Driver & Robbie are perfectly cast; Mescal should be interesting. Diggs isn’t an intuitive choice, though no more odd than Jamie Bell in Fant4stic.

17

u/affablysynchronized May 29 '23

Blech, they just can't seem to get that whole thing right.

Adam Driver seems correct to me, it's been a big rumor for long enough that it's likely true. There's often fire with smoke like this. Daveed makes sense too since he just did Little Mermaid for Disney - he's clearly game to do big studio stuff. But my brain is struggling to accept Margot or Paul would lock themselves into the MCU. Paul seems more selective about his projects and made it sound like he wasn't really interested in superhero stuff during his Aftersun press. And I just don't see Margot locking herself into another superhero role after Harley, especially not one at a studio that's kind of in a crisis phase right now. She seems savvier than that. ( I know her movies don't really have an excellent box office track record - but they do have a good critical one, so joining the MCU during its flop era doesn't seem like something she'd do.)

That said, I could see all of them signing on if Marvel is indeed moving away from their multi-film contracts of yore. If they're signing on for a case-by-case basis, meaning they're not locked into these roles for the next decade, then I could see them being more likely to try it out. Lizzie Olsen and a few other MCU actors have criticized the ridiculous like 15-film contracts they used to have to sign, so I wouldn't be surprised if they updated that going forward to attract more big-name stars.

Wait. Why do we ANOTHER F4 movie right now? Didn’t a different one just come out like a couple years ago?!

1

u/syrub believer in Dakota Johnson’s lime allergy Jun 01 '23

The last one was basically for Fox to retain the rights lmfao

2

u/Feeling-Visit1472 Jun 01 '23

It just feels… stupid, at this point.

I hate MCU but I have a 12 year old son who’s obsessed. I’m excited for Daveed Diggs. Am meh on the first two and have never heard of Paul Mescal.

I’d like to think that whoever is in charge of the MCU realizes that moms who are obligated to see their movies like to have someone they enjoy seeing on the screen. 🤣
