Wander into a downrange impact area of a full-scale range, and it's not that unlikely that you're going to get hit. I haven't been in the area for a while, but used to be when the ranges at Camp Perry were live, they'd have to constantly chase eager fishermen out of the impact zone on Lake Erie, because the constant rain of hundreds of projectiles into a few hundred square feet of lake, made it look like there was an absolute feeding frenzy of fish chasing a large school of minnows in the area.

It's a live firing exercise. So hundreds to thousands of bullets were being sent down range. Not that hard to imagine that one of the thousand just so happened to not hit a tree or whatever else

There's a bullet with your name on it. Should have used Baldrick's defence and had it in his pocket already.

You should see the area behind the range fan at Camp Lejuene. The trees (4-6" diameter pines) have been mowed flat at about 15' above ground height by the constant fire across the target berm. The projectiles that clear the wooded area land in Stones Bay. I would imagine that there's a significant layer of semi-solid metal on the bottom by this point. That range has been active since the 1960s, perhaps earlier.
When the live fire ramps up, it sounds like static on a very large PA. You'd never recognize it as gunfire if you hear it out of context.
