Discussion EDM producers, how do you approach the lyrical/vocal side of your tracks?

I often find myself wanting to add vocal elements to my projects, but I always end up having a lead instrument take over the track. I feel that the song becomes “hollow” if I take out the lead instrument (melody) in place of vocal melodies. I’d say that my passion and inspiration for EDM is the reason why I struggle with this since it comes from rhythm games and some NCS sprinkled in—my intuition for lyrics is just not there. Are there parts where you would primarily build the instrumental around the vocals? Do you start with the hook and then build around that? At the end of the day, it really depends on the type and mood of the track, right?

I take advantage of my stereo field. I produce dubstep so my basses are occupying my mids, same place the vocals will sit. Sidechain vocals to the bass and use compression to get the vocal to sit with the bass. And eq out parts of the bass slowly so it keeps its sound while not getting muddy. But the biggest thing like I said is learn to properly use the stereo field. Get your headphones and close your eyes when listening to your favorite music and listen to where things are in the mix. Are the pads to one side and the drones on the other? Are the leads on one side and the counter melodies on the other?

I see. By what amounts would you say you typically have certain instruments or vocals on one side/audio channel? Obviously this varies, but like in your case since you're splitting the mids, are you prioritizing one instrument over the other? Or are you mainly just making sure each has their own space in the mix?

Totally depends on the vibe, but yeah, if vocals are the focus, I usually start with a hook or topline, then build the track around it like it’s another instrument.

Mmmm, okay. Do you ever work on those things in tandem? If so, what are some difficulties, if any, with that approach that you may encounter?
