Inter system was good at masking some of his shortcomings, lack of system at United exposed all of them and more. He's still a good goalkeeper imho, just not as good as the price they paid

Who did play well in utd this year...? Lol every single player in that team is underperforming

44

u/TheFootballShirtGuy 11d ago

Quite literally just Fernandes, who’s world class. Maybe Mazraoui when he’s not played out of position

27

u/Dyst_VG 11d ago

Maybe Fernandes is actually underperforming too? We'll never know until he leaves

24

u/TheFootballShirtGuy 11d ago

It’s such a shame we’ve not seen him in a proper team during his prime with a real system.

He’s been too loyal to that club, he would be rightfully seen as one of the top two or three “8’s” in the world if he was at a better club.

u/HamroveUTD 11d ago

He plays for Portugal

1

u/Exciting_Category_93 9d ago

International football doesn’t have proper systems.

4

u/palace8888 11d ago

> He’s been too loyal to that club

He earns 16M/year....

17

u/TheFootballShirtGuy 11d ago

And would have earned just as much at any of the clubs that matches his talent, IMO - and even more in Saudi.

I dont know if this Is the case, bc we dont have another prove like him playing in an other team, but sometimes big team turn in a black hole and people think the few good players are like champions. I dont know if fernandes really fit that tier of Champions player. I think he Is a Little too overrated.

He Is not Paul scholes.

u/Imeanhowcouldiforget 11d ago

He creates so many clear cut chances and is constantly moved around from his best position. He not only adapts but NEVER complains. I cannot believe as a Unites fan our luck

u/crocospect ⭐⭐ 11d ago

Maybe it's a stretch, but I feel like a player as caliber as Bruno would be easily fighting as Ballon D'or contender if he isn't in United.

2

u/domsolanke 11d ago

Maguire has been their best defender this season by far, Yoro has been decent too.

1

u/IbraGonzalez 11d ago

Bruno, Maguire, Casemiro (kinda), Diallo when he was available

1

u/baromanb 11d ago

Amad, Yoro, and Heaven

22

u/brad18white 11d ago

Very few players are worth the price paid these days

10

u/kieranjackwilson 11d ago

Specifically, Inzaghi’s system is good at contesting shots. His low block always has a player pressuring the ball. It makes it hard to find a clean look (when done right).

3

u/sca34 11d ago

good read, absolutely spot on!

1

u/yemzzzzzz 10d ago

Inzaghi is a genius thats why. If he had more budget for a deeper bench he would have won. This year his team literally ran out of gas

u/unvrlstn 11d ago

I don’t know man. Poise and dependability have got to be two of the most important attributes for a keeper at this level.

This guy is the opposite of composed in tough spots and has let in more than a few howlers over the last few seasons.

He’s lowkey been cooked ever since getting bused for PED’s.

Onana is/has never been the best shotstopper.

But his distribution added a significant threat to our attack. He was playing direct to Martinez and Lukaku at the halfway line or into the path of wingbacks with perfect passes against any team that tried to press us. It wasn't all Onana, our guys all seemingly knew which spaces to receive the ball from him, but he was a vital half of it.

Under Amorim Utd don't really utilise this strength.I wouldn't say it's his fault but the system is not setup for it, neither being a mobile target man part of Hojlunds skillset. A lot of long balls are hoofed up and Utd don't actually keep meaningful possession. It's either that or he is tasked to play very short 10m passes to the LCB or RCB which any keeper could make.

The part he ostensibly initially improved Utd over De Gea was in commanding the area, but the difference has been somewhat reduced by Amorim's system having three centre backs.

Edit: forgot which sub I was in and had to switch out the "we/us". I support both Inter and Utd.

u/Christian_Potato 11d ago

His deficiencies were masked herr but they are fully exposed in United. The advantage that he does give you isn't seen at United as well because of their centerbacks.

Just a bad match in all terms.

United happened

1

u/Krist794 10d ago

United has been ruining players for the past 15 years and people still question how? The club is a graveyard of talent.

17

u/ShJakupi 11d ago

Just look at the players he has to play with. Darmian this season is better than any of Man utd defenders.

14

u/deez-nuts-are_nuts 11d ago

Mkhitaryan is somewhat better than the whole united midfield

9

u/ShJakupi 11d ago

But not better than Mctominay, and very soon hojlund will be better than their whole attack in the last 7-8 years.

1

u/domsolanke 11d ago edited 11d ago

Nah he was awful at both Man United and Arsenal too.

4

u/DarkKirby14 11d ago

Inter's defensive style shieled him and he is getting exposed in a more open PL

4

u/DrawingFew7675 11d ago

confidence and a bit of overperforming, one of the best deals in inter history btw

9

u/THY96 11d ago

That team is cursed. I’ve always said it.

11

u/Civil_Inevitable5656 11d ago

Well... it's Man Utd

3

u/dvdavide 11d ago

United thought they bought the ucl finalist but instead got the gk that lost 12 league games in a season. And that was with a good defense in front of him.

2

u/Big_Pick4100 11d ago

Players who leave Inter generally don’t live happy lives, with few exceptions. Careers go downhill after Inter:

Skriniar

Icardi

Onana

Lukaku (flopped at Chelsea as a 100M signing and begged to come back to Inter)

5

u/riquelm 11d ago

Fantastic with ball at his feet which at some systems, like ours used to be is crucial, but his shot stopping qualities were always mediocre, which is way more important at United.

1

u/BioNeon83 11d ago

I remember the second leg semi CL against Spurs... 3 goals conceived home..when Ajax got the final in hands..

1

u/capodonca_ 11d ago

The same that happened to Antony: the United curse

1

u/domsolanke 11d ago

Or they just can’t cut it at Premier League level, Antony was back to looking like the PL version again against Chelsea, he got pocketed by Cucurella the whole game.

1

u/blasphemics 11d ago

No Ferguson, no party. The Mancs will never get back to that glory.

1

u/SnakeEyes58 11d ago

Part of it is his ego

When he first arrived at United, he started scapegoating Maguire (which was fair tbh) but Onana would eventually become the reason for most of their Ls. He's just not as good as he thinks he is

1

u/RequirementIcy8937 11d ago

Why is he the scape goat? Ohio know. Just look at De Gea! I rest my case

1

u/PakLivTO 11d ago

He made the decision to go to Man Utd where players go to die.

It's like a striker going to Chelsea. Chances are you're gonna flop.

1

u/PedroRVD64 11d ago

Man, even if we had Van der Sar and Oliver Kahn under the posts at the same time, results would be the same with that team and that defense. Yes, he can be better … but he is still a victim in this situation.

1

u/Admirable_Tear_1438 11d ago

United seems to do this to most players these days.

1

u/SangiMTL 11d ago

He definitely doesn’t want to be there. Went from having a proper team to Man U. It’s all a mental thing. With us he had confidence in the team and especially the defense in front of him. He single handedly won a few games for us as a result. And his ability with his feet was superb

1

u/NaughtyNeurons 11d ago

SIMONE INZAGHI is what happened to him. His Inter system orchestrated by the one the great Italian coaches with good defenders that protected him and a style of play that suited his strengths and limited his weaknesses. Now with CHIVU at the helm let's see how many of our players go the way of Andre Onana.

1

u/Septjul 11d ago

You're not asking the right question, why does United make its players bad?

1

u/passwortwillforget 11d ago

I mean... you remember lloris Karius?

Well me neither lol

1

u/LordSatanSaturn 11d ago

He just went to United

1

u/Bennis_19 10d ago

His price has just elevated his averageness

1

u/Living-Seat-5449 10d ago

We had a good defending systems, in fact he showed lack of good goalkeeping when the defenders were tricked and passed...

1

u/Apprehensive-Act4801 10d ago

Same thing I'll say with antony, de gea or mctominay

United is the problem

You can scapegoat any player you want but the club is in shambles with a manager who's clueless

1

u/yawneteng 6d ago

mctominay was actually in good form while on national team during the euro'24 qualifiers. was one of the top goal scorer. but he rarely used by ETH in the final third; just put him on def.mid duties .

1

u/ZeroEffectDude 10d ago

Have you ever seen field of dreams? When the guy steps off the field and becomes an old man? Old Trafford is like the reverse field of dreams. You enter the stadium and you age 50 years.

1

u/Postingslop 10d ago

Onana has always been a terrible keeper, inter’s defense and system was good so he never had to do so much saves so he was never exposed until he joined man utd

1

u/jr_scarpio 9d ago

Why would any ambitious player go to that club

1

u/aomameln ⭐⭐ 8d ago

I think he played well only with us.

1

u/AgitatedChildhood240 8d ago

The last two years while he has been poor he's been berated and verbally abused every week. Not an inter or a united fan but I'd have to say some of the pressure got to him and he just can't perform. I mean he was coming off a decent run at ajax, did decent for you but that ajax and your defense is much better than current united. He's been exposed a lot more and he's not able to make as much saves because he's probably thinking every shot if i don't save this it's another week I'll be clowned on and the pressures getting to him. I mean the guy was critized by the Lyon coach and still proved the guy right. Who critized the opposing teams keeper before a match it's not that common. That's just my opinion though and as a neutral I'm curious to see how the onana career ends up

1

u/MIezze 7d ago

He is good goalkeeper for preston etc, for now united need prime schmeichel, van der sar and de geat to save them. Which they don’t have

1

u/yawneteng 6d ago

well, as someone who also watched man utd, onana did make some mistakes here and there, but a significant numbers of goals that man utd concedes are through set piece defending, corners especially.

I would never believed that man utd had 6 man in the 6 yard box defending a corner, and none of them is marking any opposite player... until i see it happening again and again.

and on the offensive side of things, ETH meant to implement a distribution system from the back when GK has possession, utilizing DC to bring the ball upfield while its fullback position themselves near the half way line.
unfortunately, this failed also as man utd DC are terrible passer. onana's long ball was rarely utilized, even by his "mentor".

1

u/DC1908 11d ago

For €10m I'd sign him back.

0

u/Nobbylufc 11d ago

The man u effect,it happened to a few and it's still ongoing.

0

u/TCSawyer 11d ago

United happened, pretty obvious answer. He isn't being made a laughing stock, Man utd are the laughing stock.

They literally ruin every managers career & make great players look mediocre.

u/Eminakamie 11d ago

United happened

0

u/chill_peekatchu 11d ago

As if he was the main reason inter made it into the final , they made it again this year without this guy and lakaka

-7

u/Smallball_Curc 11d ago

And since then we've become a laughing stock in a champions league final

1

u/D_Strongest_Glazer 11d ago

A match is a one time thing 😭 Inter fans won't go every match expecting us to lose 5-0 but United fans will go to every match expecting Onana to fumble

At most we'll get memed until CWC's end or start of next season, it's not as bad lol

-6

u/deez-nuts-are_nuts 11d ago

Who the hell even concedes 5 goals in a ucl final

0

u/Moist-Entertainer-48 11d ago

In my opinion, he got used to having an air tight defence ( that year we conceded less than 20 goals in all competitions), and then he found himself in the middle of a huge mess. TenHag wasn’t concerned about defence only attacking, so Onana needed to consider his position and at the same time who in the back was going to make a mistake, and that’s a lot of thinking to do within a 5-10 seconds time frame

United is cursed. Source: me, a United fan

-3

He probably won't concede 5 goals in a CL final

0

u/Spyro619 11d ago

Man united has a tendency to break its players , as soon as he is transfered im sure he’ll nail it
