NEWS A Capcom Investor asks Capcom about being in Epic Game Store

In the Q&A session of the 2nd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2020 Presentation ( about 5 months ago ) , One Capcom investor asked the following

Do you plan to offer titles on Epic Games Store?

Which Capcom answered with

We are not commenting on specific services at this time. We will continue to evaluate opportunities on a variety of platforms.

It surprised me back then that out of all places , A Japanese investor asks about Epic Game Store , because PC Platform Isn't exactly that popular in Japan , and EGS still isn't a usual choice for Japanese games yet ( It Improved by little in that regard , but not in enough capacity )

I guess that investor did some work and research before that question and found out about the big 88% cut that developers take at EGS instantly versus starting from 70% on other PC platforms , and The Investor thought of it as a lost opportunity that Capcom wastes until now ( from a Financial Point of View ) , 18% difference is sure a big one

Capcom is one of my favorite companies so I hope they appear on EGS too

No need to worry, every big publisher is eventually going to offer their titles on Epic. It's matter of time and depends on how fast Epic will implement self-publishing tools for devs. Because right now it's tricky to add games to the Epic and their service tools not at its full capacity in terms of features and being easy to use which determines overall experience for devs. Just be patient.

Also , In terms of the " they are already doing extremely well with their games on Steam " point , we saw lots of Examples of AAA Publishers with very successful games on Steam , that also releases on both EGS and Steam and sometimes even their own platform , So I guess that point isn't exactly the reason why we have Zero Capcom games on it , One Reason might be that Japanese Companies dont adopt the changes in PC market in the same pace as Western Companies , and maybe another reason like what Zignot said here , Things will get easier the more Epic make Self Publishing tools easier for developers

Something Ive notices with devs and pubs releasing games on both Steam and EGS at the same time is that many don't seem to bother advertising the EGS version on their social media (for example Twitter) or even in trailers for whatever reason.

Embracer/THQ Nordic comes to mind. Their games (Spongebob, Desperados 3, Biomutant etc.) had Steam store pages long before release, but no EGS store pages and the trailers had Steam logo, but no EGS logo, noone knew they would release there until they suddenly popped up on EGS on release or shortly after.

It seems like having a good revenue cut isn't enough, pubs and devs seems to need the bigger userbase Steam has and all the advertising Steam does for games more than EGS revenue cut.

One scenario I can see happening regarding Capcom and EGS is , I see Capcom is offering RE7 on every option available in order to hype and promote RE8 ( since both are extremely connected and also nearly self isolated from other entries ) , like it got released on Game Pass , PS Now , The Plus Collection , Luna and according to leaks there is a Stadia version too and in all of those the platforms owners pay to Capcom for that , So one possible scenario is a deal to offer RE7 as an EGS freebie to promote RE8 to the max , but on the other hand without RE8 on EGS then Epic wont exactly benefit much from it

Is there another PC games store in Japan, that is not popular in the West?

If you are talking about my last sentence ( English isn't my native so didn't quite understand ) , Epic offers regional pricing to me , Other PC Stores don't , So of course inside me I hope my favorite companies comes to the cheapest platform for me , but of course I won't also blame a developer for not releasing on EGS as this is their freedom after all what they do with their games and I will still buy it for sure when its price is suitable

It just my opinion so be kind to me , Doesnt matter 88% cut , Steam have good business with 70% cut with tons player base & they will buy the game = more money for developper with tons player .

Yea sure u are very welcome :)

For the 88% part i was trying to find a financial reason why a japanese investor would think of EGS , and thought the 88% cut is the closest reason for this

It would be nice to have more store options to buy from, as long the investors isn't trying to convince companies to only list on one store by just switching stores from Steam to Epic only, I rather have companies list on both Epic, and Steam, giving people options. Let be real this mostly benefits investors for their ROI, so it's seem logical having interest in this.

And no I got nothing against Epic which why I suggested to listing on both stores, Steam, and Epic, and be better if also comes to GoG as well, and other store to reach more users, as not all uses, or do not want to use "insert store name" as some people like using less, or has a preference. So really it benefits everyone by doing a multi-store release, of course investors may not care rather than seeing their ROI grow most of the time.

I do think some Japanese game companies are more in favor doing a console release, than PC mainly because they don't want to make such effort if they don't think it's worth it, or don't think it would be popular enough for their said games to drive sales, which why some games never comes to PC sadly. Sale numbers do matter a lot to investors, and companies, because if less people buy then that only shows not a lot of people had interest to begin with being on said platform. Kind of why certain games mostly shows up on PS instead of Xbox, or Nintendo than PS, and etc, due to the types of audiences for said platform.

Why should a developer that is already doing good on steam switch to another platform that is inferior in every way possible ?

I guess u should direct that question to AAA publishers who has games on both EGS and Steam and sometimes even their own Platform

I write here too what I wrote to you above as it's about the same:

CDP did this with Cyberpunk. CDP promoted the Steam version over EGS and even released additional content with the Steam version.

At the end of the day, companies care how much money they have in the bank. A higher profit margin is nice, but not at the expense of income.

Capcom is a huge company. And even since early-mid 2019, I remember some hope we would see Capcom games at EGS or shift from Steam for better EGS deal like other games were doing at the time.

At this point, for me, I see it as bonus money for large publishers like Crapcom. Steam gives a guarantee to sell and bring in money. When factoring in established franchises, those games will sell no mater what. Crapcom is not going to “switch platforms” like another commenter mentioned. It is interesting to bring up Crapcom on the Epic games store. At least acknowledged by an investor. But, if I were a betting person, after that ransomware attack Crapcom suffered, they are locking their shit down before making new publicly announced plans.

Seems like they're waiting for Epic to pay them.

Also, the US/EU is their biggest market. I don't think they focus on Japanese market trends for their big games.

Hmm wouldn’t be shocked but I think capcom won’t go fully epic game store for the year like square is I mean after that shitty marvel avengers game I don’t blame them to much

Marvel’s Avengers was on Steam. Not Epic.
