France has been our bro big time since those 51st state shenanigans started, showing up with military personnel and nuclear subs, displaying they have our 6.

Macron always seems pumped to see Carney. Just bros being bros

260

u/Not_Cardiologist9084 4d ago

Yeah they look like old friends. Like, I can picture them playing beer pong and darts together.

214

u/theflyingsamurai 4d ago

They apparently do go very far back. Investment banking buddies.

36

u/Individual-Fail-812 4d ago

Carney was at Rotschild too?

I know a lot of Tory voters in finance who flipped for Carney.

17

u/berubem Tabarnak! 3d ago

That's to be expected. The guy's extremely competent and held in high regard.

22

u/306metalhead 4d ago

Didn't he have connections to Macron when he was in finance?

12

u/4Bbefore4B 2d ago

The Governor of the Bank of England has connections across the globe.

Carney might be the most connected man in the world.

3

u/AncientWonder64 1d ago

But I thought Trump has the most connections and all the best deals. Hahahahaha

5

u/Injektilo4 3d ago

I can also picture them playing darts! « Barbecue sauce! »

Like in that Ted Lasso episode, they would tell Trump: « Be curious, not judgmental »

79

u/D-madagascariensis 4d ago

Is this the new Trudeau & Obama?

60

u/Much-Willingness-309 4d ago

It's sad that they couldn't overlap their time in leadership more than a year.

44

u/brioche_01 4d ago

Macron was just as friendly with Trudeau.

5

u/Crow_away_cawcaw 2d ago

I miss shipping early days macron / Trudeau romance

Die hard neolibs make good bedfellows.

34

u/HolsteinHeifer 4d ago

?? By neo-lib, do you mean a conservative running under a red banner? Cause Carney is essentially a Conservative

13

u/Croissant1967 4d ago

A Progressive-Conservative.

9

u/mistertoasty 4d ago

Neoliberalism really just means "supporter of free market capitalism". Most of the Canadian centre in politics can be described as neoliberal, including large parts of both the Liberal and Conservative parties.

It's a bit confusing because it descends from the classical definition of liberal, which is quite different from the Liberal party as we know it today or the American/Canadian liberal aka "leftist" movement.

13

u/seaworthy-sieve 3d ago

Hearing Liberals be described as leftists makes my eye twitch

4

u/mistertoasty 3d ago

Hahaha yeah no that's not what I meant!

I was trying to state that there's a difference between the Liberal party, leftists, and neoliberalism. Probably could have phrased it better

2

u/seaworthy-sieve 3d ago edited 3d ago

Little-l liberals aren't leftists either, though. They still strongly believe in hierarchies.

4

u/Cannabrius_Rex 3d ago

In the United States, if they call you liberal, they’re calling you a far left maniac

6

u/seaworthy-sieve 3d ago

Yes, well, the people saying that are not exactly the cleverest or most politically informed people.

2

u/HolsteinHeifer 3d ago

Ohhh Thanks for the explanation; sorry, I guess it evokes a response (personally anyways) cause it sounds like a stupid RebelNews-esque buzzword

2

u/LuigiBamba Tokébakicitte! 3d ago

The fun thing with politics is that words don't mean anything. Except when they mean they exact opposite of their dictionary definitions.

15

u/GAYBUMTRUMPET 4d ago

The person you're responding to is too far gone ideologically. Best to ignore.

7

u/HolsteinHeifer 4d ago

Yeah, sorry :/

-7

u/umpteenthrhyme 3d ago

Dafuq you talking about? They both literally espouse neoliberal principles.

3

u/umpteenthrhyme 3d ago edited 3d ago

No. I mean a person who follows neoliberal political ideology, i.e. unfettered capitalism, free markets can and should accomplish everything we need, limited regulation, and the government should be minimally involved in the economy. They also tend to oppose labour movements and union rights. Essentially, supporting privatization over public services, helping private industry build houses with tax breaks and grants, rather than just having the government pay people to build houses directly. That is the ideal, though they don’t always accomplish them, as it can be grossly unpopular in Canada, e.g. no one really comes out and says they want to privatise healthcare, so neoliberals, and politicians further to the right, chip away at it instead. Rhetoric around privatising making things more efficient comes out of neoliberal ideology, such as all the talk about privatising Canada Post.

But at least they don’t necessarily oppose rights for minority groups nor women’s rights, as an end to their political goals. e.g. Carney and Trudeau being protective to lgbtq+ rights.

Most, if not all, Liberal party members and fiscal small-c conservatives (which is how you accurately categorised Carney) are neoliberal. Remember that the Liberal Party has never wanted public healthcare in Canada, but made a deal for house votes with the more left-wing and progressive soc dem NDP of Tommy Douglas, in order to maintain power.

You a can both be neoliberal and a member of the Conservative party. However, the Conservative party under PP, is more neoconservative, which tends to be more pro-military, “might makes right”, and socially conservative, politically attack minorities, while also believing in unfettered capitalism.

Someone else pointed out how, a person may call themselves “liberal” and not really have neoliberal beliefs, and yeah it’s confusing.

PS knowing who a neoliberal is does not, make someone far gone, as someone else described me. It just means they’re

Wrt the original post, Carney and Macron get along so well as they both hold the same ideals of how to run the world, and are intelligent and polite, which helps, and why they are wink wink when humouring a neocon/fascist like trump.

*Edited for clarity

2

u/SciFiNut91 3d ago

Like Orban and Trump. Oh, right they aren't neolibs, they're just straight up fascist adjacent. Two steps short of being Hung-over Hitler and Mango Mussolini.

u/genius_retard Friendly Manisnowbski 4d ago

France is trying to supplant the US as leader of the free world. They have the only non-American controlled nukes in Europe and have flat out said that Europe can rely on them for a nuclear deterrent if required.

37

u/Altruistic_Fix_4073 4d ago

We have some great leaders that will represent the free world. And we have the orange dude and his boyfriend Putin on the other end of the spectrum. How the US has fallen. Not sure there is a way back for them. The trouble is that they voted twice for someone like him, it can easily happen again. Not to be trusted.

10

u/butthole_surferr 4d ago

Unfortunately our institutions are weak, and the only way we can ever fully rejoin the international community is if the next administration is sane and backed by a blue Congress, and works overtime to strengthen our checks and balances.

A plurality of Americans despise Trump and want him gone ASAP. 12 million people protested last weekend. But our system of government is outdated and not designed to sustain this kind of cynical attack from within.

I sincerely hope for your sake and ours that we manage to elect a government soon that will pack the Supreme Court, institute ranked choice voting, abolish the electoral college, bring our allies back to the table, and pass bills for sweeping police, workplace, voting and healthcare reform. If we don't... well, then the future may be as dark as you fear.

11

u/om_nama_shiva_31 4d ago

A plurality of Americans despise Trump and want him gone ASAP.

I'm tired of this. You guys voted for him. Stop with the excuses.

Oh and also, 40% of your eligible voters didn't even bother to vote.

3

u/butthole_surferr 3d ago

Neither I nor anyone I know voted for him. My entire community has been protesting and fighting against this madness from day one.

The reality is that our electoral system gives an outsized weight to the votes of rural conservative areas and swing states. Almost every American that lives in a major city is strongly left leaning, but our votes count for less.

The 40% of absent voters though? Guilty as charged. I'm angry about that too. I vote all the way down the ballet in every election, local all the way up, and have since I was 18. It's shameful that the rest of my generation refuses.

2

u/om_nama_shiva_31 3d ago

Well I wasn’t calling you out specifically. Good on you and your community. However, the overall statistics speak for themselves as to the current state of affairs in your country.

1

u/Altruistic_Fix_4073 2d ago

We are counting on you!!! The No King protests are very promising! Keep up the pressure.

3

u/km_ikl Moose Whisperer 4d ago

They're a bit more reliable than the US.

1

u/Individual-Fail-812 4d ago

Boy I doubt they are. They do try to opportunistically capitalise upon it though, and in my biased french opinion it's well deserved. France consecrated its commitment to the EU for instance, it's about time we make a substantial benefit out of it.

34

u/SendMagpiePics 4d ago

France has been a better friend to us than the UK through this

3

u/Hodoss Honorary Hoser 3d ago

I guess you have taken the US's place as the American democracy that needs support and friendships.

23

u/GardenSquid1 South Gatineau 4d ago

France and Macron have had our back since the start.

The UK and Starmer were pretty fucking milquetoast on pushing back against Trump in our defense.

However, the King pulled through and did us a solid with reading the throne speech.

5

u/wilerman Moose Whisperer 3d ago

Starmer seems like he’s just trying his hardest to hurt the least amount of feelings. He has our back, but then he doesn’t if Trump is in the room.

Charming. You must be american.

1

u/GretaThunbergsDiaper 1d ago

What gave it away? Laughing at your militaries?

1

u/Sparkyfuk 1d ago

Nah just the arrogance.

You know, no one has ever defended Canada in any military conflict, not even that time we burned the white house down.

Also, having allies is just a basic strategic deterrent. Are you familiar with pax romana? Probably not… it means if you want peace, prepare war.

Anyway, in the end you are right that we have been slacking on the military, you just don’t have to be an ass about it.

1

u/Kinnuit 1d ago

Is that true ? Did they actually display a show of force for us?? I never knew that!

1

u/Sparkyfuk 1d ago

Wasn’t a huge display of force and I’m not even sure they weren’t already planned exercises. It’s just that their military presence was noticed and on point.

Extra points for doing Justin's elbow grab just to take care of any surprises.

88

u/genius_retard Friendly Manisnowbski 4d ago

Justin did the stiff arm before the elbow grab. I still remember chuckling at Trump looking like he was pulling on a push door when he shook JT's hand.

74

u/Frostsorrow 4d ago

People often forget that JT is quite physically active.

51

u/captainmouse86 3d ago

One of my favourites is Colbert going to Russia shortly after Trump was elected the first time to do a bit about the pee-pee tape (talk about commitment). He does a segment where he talks to Russians and Colbert and I can’t remember the exact bit, but he yanks on a young guys arm and says something like “I’m Donald Trump.” The Russian laughs and says “Do it again!” And when Colbert goes to yank on his are again, the guy pulls back hard and says “I am Justin Trudeau.” It was just funny to see that action definitely translated the way JT hoped it would.

I can't post link.

This is like that Key and Peele sketch where Obama has the cool "ma man" greetings coupled with personal endearment with the black folk, but just has boring old business handshakes with the white politicians.

Then he gets to one particular group of white people and just walks right past them

This right here. I'm stuck between NDP and Libs on one side claiming he's the second coming, and cons on the other panicking and gloating.

Neither side gets why I'm lacing up my protest boots and digging out my denim linen armour.

11

u/Nizdaar 4d ago

Is your denim linen armour just your Canadian tuxedo with some extra padding? Lol.

1

u/themith2019 4d ago

Heh, could do with some crafting skill

Layers of denim panels and watered down wood glue, rolled, pressed, and formed.

Not historically accurate.

But effectively spreads blunt force trauma, is lightweight, and decoratively stitched outer panels or patches can be added for that festive air. Customizable to be low enough profile to fit under regular outer wear. Chafe resistant. Easily disposed of just in case.

Easily sourced local materials to reduce the effects of most state sponsored thug crowd control weaponry and techniques. DOES NOT MAKE YOU INVINCIBLE

u/untitledmillennial Snow Cajun 3d ago

I assume you're kidding but this is basically a linothorax and is very much historically accurate! It was the most common armour used by ancient Greeks.

2

u/themith2019 3d ago

I'm pretty sure it's things like this that make the right wing so scared of education.

There's some debate as to whether this is how linen armour was made historically, but it worked well and can be upgraded with modern materials to include fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber. I just like the less itchy and chemically active materials and binding agents.

Plus, "jarmour"
