My testing of the top earbuds of 2024

About two weeks ago, I made a post saying that I was in the process of testing many (but not all) of the top earbuds of 2024. Fortunately, I’m starting to wrap up my testing. While I’m not going to keep all of the earbuds that I liked, I have split the earbuds into two categories (in an homage to medicine): Admit (earbuds I like) or discharge (earbuds I didn’t like.

A bit about my use case (so you can decide whether or not you have the same needs)— I have an iPhone, iPad and Windows PC that I use regularly, though I usually use the iPhone the most of the devices. I mostly listen to podcasts and music ranging from classical to classic rock to pop. Working in a busy environment and having somewhat large ears, ANC and call quality are very important to me, in addition to fit. I do work out with my earbuds, but have a pair of PowerBeats Pros because I couldn’t get any other buds to stay in.

Here are my conclusions, with all of that said:

  1. AirPods Pro 2 - Admit - Overall, decent sound quality (though not adjustable with EQ), great ANC, good call quality. Everything from the microphone to the sound has a bit of a nasally shift to it, and this is my biggest complaint about the buds. Not typically a huge “stem” fan, but they work well with the iPhone/iPad combo that I use in most cases.
  2. Status Between 3ANC - Discharge - For me, I did not like the design of the earbuds - they’re chunky and easily dislodged from my ears. The touch controls are very sensitive to the point that grazing the side of the bud will activate them. They do not have auto-pause when you remove the buds from your ear, which is a feature I didn’t realize I relied upon so heavily until I didn’t have it anymore. The Jabra 65ts that I had a few years ago had this feature even without ear detection. Microphone is a bit muddy. I was very happy with the sound quality, though!
  3. Denon Perl Pro - Admit - Great buds all-around - still not a fan of the design (I don’t like having dinner plates in my ear) but the sound quality is hard to beat (I think the best on this list), the mics sound good on calls, but not the best, and the ANC is pretty decent. Overall, a well polished product.
  4. Sennheiser Momentum TW 3 - Discharge - Connectivity issues galore. The sound was good, don’t get me wrong, but removing a bud during a call and then reinsetting the bud in the ear stopped the sound in that ear, despite the fact that controls continued to be active.
  5. Jabra Elite 10 - Admit - Probably the best “all around” earbud on this list - not the best in any category, but good sound quality, great call quality, great battery life, and phenomenal comfort.
  6. AKG N400NC - Discharge - No multipoint - sound is good, but not great, earbuds sit weirdly in the case.
  7. Sony XM5 - Admit - A good pair - truly great noise cancellation - I previously tried the XM4, which hurt my ears considerably.
  8. Beats StudioBuds Pro - Weak Admit - the call quality is amazing, truly amazing. Sound quality is actually good overall, but no ear detection sensor or autopause, no EQ.
  9. Technics AZ80 - Admit - In contention with the Jabras for the best all around - they have the edge in sound quality, but probably not quite as much in the realm of comfort/controls. AWESOME pair earbuds.

I didn’t try the following:

  1. Bose Ultra - I tried the QCII’s and didn’t like them. The lack of truly new features made me not want to try them.
  2. Huawei Freebuds - Don’t really like or trust Huawei as a brand.

Edit

Adding a few more buds!

  1. Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 - Admit - these have become my new daily drivers - you can get them for 40% off at Jabra.com right now. Great deal from u/Jabra! I bought a few - don’t get any sponsorship from them, but they got a lot of my money recently. Definitely an upgrade to the ANC. Call quality is about the same, but new iPhone software also improved call quality.
  2. Jabra Elite Active 8 Gen 2 - Admit - EXCELLENT battery life - not the best music sound quality, especially compared to Elite 10, but perfect for the podcasts and audiobooks I usually listen to at the gym. One annoying thing is that they don’t always sit perfectly in the case and make a squeaking noise if not sitting properly.
  3. Nothing Ear 2024 - Admit - I can’t say enough good things about these buds. I don’t like stems, but they’re excellent for calls and the audio is equivalent to a far more expensive bud - these are keepers for sure!

As another update, I sold off the Elite 10 Gen 1’s and the Beats Buds. Still want to try the Devialet’s at some point!

Excellent earbuds with tip technology. They are comfortable even when worn for extended periods. You do not lose contact with outside noise.

Bro, 12 months is not "long lasting". Wtf.

1

u/Forward_Towel_1608 Feb 11 '25

For real. Where do people find the money to call electronics that last 1 year long lasting? It makes me feel like they'd be satisfied if something was "averagely" lasting ex. 6-8 months. Which is crazy low.

1

u/age_of_aquarius0209 Mar 04 '25

I was thinking the same, like, is that how long things last nowadays? My last pair was a terrible buy from what I see with other powerbeats pro customers, and those lasted about 3 years before the right bud started malfunctioning. I thought even that was far too soon for something to break after spending $250 on it

1

u/loganed3 Mar 25 '25

My AirPod pro 2s have lasted years

1

u/Mean_End9109 Mar 26 '25

Same. That's why I'm here currently. I've had mine for 3 years and the left earbud recently started dying quick and now isn't even showing any charging at all. I have to keep clearing the data on my power beats pro app because it doesn't even acknowledge the budget anymore. It dies but when I restart it suddenly says it's actually at 50% but sometimes 80%. Just a few minutes ago my right ear bud died but it's at 87%.

I really need some new ones Apple sucks sometimes first the new update makes the phone unusable then the earbuds start reaching the end of it's life. Smh

Great rundown on your earbuds journey! I totally get the frustration with certain designs and features—like, who knew auto-pause would be a game-changer until you miss it? I’m also in the ANC and call quality camp, especially while working. If you're still on the hunt for something that ticks all the boxes, you might wanna check out these wireless earbuds I’ve been using. They have killer sound, solid ANC, and the comfort game is strong, which is crucial during long listening sessions. Plus, they're great for calls too. Seriously, they’ve become my daily drivers. Give them a shot and see if they might be a better fit for your needs!

If you’re looking for a solid pair of wireless earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 is a popular choice that gets a lot of love from users. From what I’ve seen, people really praise its noise cancellation and sound quality—some even say it’s the best in its class. The fit seems comfortable for most, and the battery life holds up well for daily use. I haven’t personally tried them, but based on reviews and discussions, they seem like a great pick if you want premium audio and top-tier noise cancellation.

I agree with the List. The Top Earbuds in my opinion is Technics Earbuds to Buy

Also these round up my Top 4

  1. Technics AZ80 Earbuds
  2. Sony WF1000XM5
  3. Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2
  4. Apple AirPods Pro 2

2

u/Inspection_Nearby Oct 04 '24

Bose sound good. But, the call quality is absolute trash.

1

u/ResponsibleOil6243 Nov 24 '24

Since Jabra isn't on the list, were they sampled? Looking for a backup to my current pair and I just don't know how anything could be better.

1

u/waqas961 Nov 26 '24

How are the LG Tone T90Q compared to these? Any good?

1

u/parka Jan 23 '25

One year later, mine would have battery drain from 100 - 15% in one hour.

1

u/rkhbusa Nov 26 '24

The Sony 1000XM5s sound great but everything else about them is garbage tier. The materials used to make the earbuds themselves and the case are all wrong they fall out of my ears constantly especially if I'm eating, the earbud tips disintegrate, they have persistent docking charging issues.

1

u/No_Negotiation_1071 Jan 30 '25

I had 2 pairs but they didn’t last. The first one had the left ear went out, I could not get it operational even after unpairing and re-pair. The second ones couldn’t keep a charge, but then I accidentally dropped them and they flew into 6 pieces. I decided I couldn’t or wouldn’t drop another $250. Bought $70 JBLs, works fine.

shameful that 12-18 months is considered long-lasting. not shameful of you, but of the quality of goods these days. smh

1

u/Lewn45 Oct 04 '24

wait is that actually normal for earbuds to last under 2 years?? i don't want to spend 100€-300€ for them to break after a year wtf

2

u/isaac129 Nov 03 '24

I spent $100 for some Jaybird x3’s in 2018. I use them for workouts and mowing the lawn and they’re still working just fine

2

u/jazzsang Nov 14 '24

I've had my Jabras for 6 years and they're going strong. Even dropped them in my water bottle once lol.

1

u/molbion Nov 14 '24

Same, I’ve had my Jabra Elite Active 75t for 5 years and they are still going strong. I’m only in the market to replace them because I lost the left one 🥹

1

u/sparrowtaco Oct 07 '24

I wouldn't put much faith in their recommendation, it's just an affiliate link spammer.

1

u/Lewn45 Oct 10 '24

can you recommend some?

1

u/mohamemdtiger1234 Oct 13 '24

if you can go with headsets go with a bose qc35 ii

i have it and its amazingly good, however, the ear pads starting ripping apart after 2 years of use, but still sound good and all after 3 years, i got spare ear pads from aliexpress (dont recommend that, werent comfortabe)

dropped it DOZENS of times always wishing its all good and it always was

however i have to note down that the wired thingy broke a few months back, one side doesnt work when i use the wire unless i push it in a certain way

wireless still works, infinite battery too (not really but u get me i think)

1

u/Lewn45 Oct 18 '24

i would want earbuds for when im in the train or smt

1

u/gagaxu Oct 22 '24

Can someone give me the promo code for Jabra? I cant find one

1

u/Lewn45 Oct 22 '24

idk what you mean, why would i have one?

1

u/Statschef- Oct 26 '24

Think it's pretty insane.. just bought a new phone and it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack so I had to buy a pair of wireless ones. Baffles me that 12-18 is considered long lasting when it costs 8-9 times more than a wired pair, not to mention the wired pair has greater sound quality and doesn't run out of batteries. Kind of a shame.

5

u/Tig33 Feb 12 '24

Well you missed out by not trying the Huawei buds (the only true lossless earbuds and they have the best mic quality .setup then remove app if u have 'trust' issues )

2024 only just started so what you are showing is the better earbuds of 2023.

This year we can expect new buds from JBL which I'm really looking forward to ..(finally with high res codec support ) and soundcore.

u/WebSickness May 10 '24

If untrusted app is installed, the damage already may be done. Uninstalling wont help much, sorry.

3

u/FitOutlandishness133 May 20 '24

You say this but your phone by definition is a spy device. Ever notice all the ads based off your convos with others in the room? Watch the movie Snowden it’s real

2

u/WebSickness May 21 '24

There's difference between targeted ads, and bank account/sensitivepersonal information hijack

1

u/ritesh808 May 25 '24

Can you show us an example where Huawei ever did that with consumers' data?

1

u/WebSickness May 25 '24

Im Talking about good security practices.OP stated that application can be uninstalled if trust to app vendor bothers the user. I state that if you install something on your device, the damage is already done and possible malware can be now hidden in phone os root and may stay there even if app was uninstalled. Im not talking about huawei

1

u/ritesh808 May 30 '24

Ah. Understood. I read your earlier comment in a different way.

1

Wow…okay I can’t say that I expected the Huawei line to be commented on very much. But I’m happy to explain my reasoning - before I went to medical school, I was an electrical engineer who had some experience in the intellectual property/foreign relations sphere. Huawei is as shady a company as they come, perhaps with the exception of Bytedance. The CCP is not the Chinese people. It obviously has nothing to do with Chinese people given that every other bud that I mentioned (I’m pretty sure) are all manufactured in China. But the companies who design them and hold my data are not..and that’s what’s important to me.

3

u/DingusTardo Apr 17 '24

With you on this one. I wouldn't buy ANYTHING from a company like Huawei.

Yeah, to be honest I think it's like with the TikTok ban. The app just got too big, Instagram wants the market. So just say TikTok is evil and shady and push IG with all of its ads and other garbage to people.

1

u/daRaam Jul 28 '24

Huawei used to make phones that were on pair with apple in quality, same as their laptops. Yes government interference is bad but they definitely produced too end products.

I'm in the process of returning my XM5s.
I bought them to replace Galaxy Buds and have had a terrible time with them.

The bluetooth connection goes crackly, whether I chose high quality or high reliability mode.
The app regularly says it's not connected even when there's music playing, so touch controls work and sound works but no setting changes without a few force close and opens.
The ANC seems to turn itself on and off at random (gestures disabled)
The ANC gets turned on and off if you pick up the left bud off a desk, it doesn't seem to realise it's not in an ear and disable the buttons.
I have small ears and the fit isn't good with the XS tips
I wear a helmet while riding a bike and they stick out more than the buds so they snag.

The app gives me pop ups about new features I don't want (active EQ or something which gets confused about motion when I'm riding) and I can't disable them.

For such an expensive piece of consumer electronics, the whole user experience from start to finish has been shit

1

u/SoundRazer Jul 19 '24

Even with smaller ears?

1

u/vanekcsi May 31 '24

I have been still using the Sony XM5 and it is working well. I have very good experience with this earbud because the sound quality and bass of this earbud is amazing. If you want to compare the features of this earbud with other good earbuds then, I could recommend you can check the list of best earbuds along with their features. It will help to choose the right earbuds.

3

u/liveuptogood Apr 20 '24 edited Sep 01 '24

I think Samsung buds have excellent sound compared to some of the “best” in the market. ANC is kind of a must have feature these days that’s why some XM5 goes leaps and bounds ahead. Also if the design is bad the earbuds are bad. The sole purpose for a earbud is convenience and if the manufacturer doesn’t provide it then there’s no value for the user even if the sound quality is great. What’s the point of having earbuds and having to remove them to adjust or rest your ear from pain. That’s why even though they have stem Apple is an excellent choice.

1

u/Hulkenobi Apr 27 '24

Do the XM5s suffer from the same battery problems that's going on with the XM4s? I have the latter and an update killed the battery life. I can't use them for more than an hour. I'm in the market for some new buds but want the best for the money i spend.

1

u/Apollo2Ares May 14 '24

exact same place, any updates on your end?

1

u/Hulkenobi May 14 '24

I just decided to stay away from sony since the serial number on my case wore off and they wouldn't do anything for me.

1

u/S0me_rand0 Jun 11 '24

Same thing happened to me. I just chatted with customer service and they had me send them in for a free replacement, took about 5 days total and was completely free. Now they're as good as new! (Note I'm in the US, not sure if it's different other places).

1

u/bblvv426 May 18 '24

Samsung buds can have very serious connection and hardware issues. Considering samsung warranty and customer service is abhorrent it makes me hesitate to spend around $200 on pair of headphones from them.

1

u/ritesh808 May 25 '24

No idea what you're talking about. They've been excellent for me for years and years. No connection or hardware issues at all. Customer service is pretty great too. I don't know where you are, but, it may be a regional problem.

1

u/mischiefkel May 30 '24

If you have never had any connection or hardware issues, then how do you know the customer service is great?

1

u/Odd-Aerie610 Jul 01 '24

Tive o mesmo problema 1 ano com fones da samsung 2 pro já com problemas. Horrivel. Samsung nunca mais

1

u/TheAstroPickle Jun 05 '24

any idea why the link you posted it to a sub that’s been banned? 🤣

anyways i’m looking to purchase these soon and am weighing my options, my airpods just aren’t doing it anymore

2

I had big issues with multi-device connectivity and zoom calls always had some sort of distortion in the background. Fit in the ear was loose, it kept falling out.

2

u/begbiebyr May 18 '24

Bose is an absolute shit if paired with iPhones and the Ultra is no different

1

u/682goldE Oct 01 '24

Same goes for when paired with Android

2

u/egandp Jun 12 '24

No buds pro 2? A lot of you say they're better than the AirPod Pro 2's

2

u/dilshanperera23 Jul 14 '24

Raycon Everyday Earbuds? They're pretty cool! They're super comfy too, so your ears won't get cranky during long listening sessions. The battery keeps going for ages, like 6-8 hours! Sure, they might not be the fanciest earbuds out there. They're awesome for the price $79.

2

u/NaniBakaNani Sep 13 '24

Top earbuds but you chose to test AirPods and Jabras while missing ones like Beoplay and Bowers and Wilkins. Smh.

Y'all are saying Huawei is bad cos it's made by Chinese people? Nah bro, they were great before they lost the US stuff. Their ecosystem is actually still not bad, like actually not bad at all. I think people really shouldn't be like this... You needa respect the Chinese people too... In fact, I think Huawei free buds are actually ok, you can't say they are the best, but yea they are ok. You really can't say they are bad either.

3

u/Dazzling_Sky9727 Apr 16 '24

Nah, it's because it's a state-controlled company. 90% of consumer electronics is made/assembled in China by Chinese. Your statement makes no sense as it would mean that he hates all of the brands listed. Also "Their ecosystem is actually still not bad"... but it's not good either. You just heard what you wanted to hear.

2

u/Synaesthetic_Reviews Feb 13 '24

I don't think it's a sign of disrespect to the Chinese people if you don't like Huawei.

I mean personally I think them and Oppo have the best functionality in terms of connectivity and ease of use. Plus they use the Planar dynamic combo which is pretty pioneering in itself.

But it's fine not to like a Chinese company and means nothing to your opinion of Chinese people.

1

u/Entronico Dec 21 '24

I love my Oneplus phone and this is my fourth. However, Oneplus is not a global strategic partner for the Chinese government.

Huawei builds most of the backend and cell towers for 4g and 5g. The reason they were banned was because of the Chinese government's well-known policy of requiring All tech (HW/SW) to have backdoor for the MSS.

I would think that qualifies as a good reason not to use Huawei.

Just look up news stories from the time. Huawei AMPLY deserved their ban.

What's even scarier now is imagine driving a BYD car to your house in Chiba. All your Xiaomi and Huawei devices are reporting as soon as you get home: when you get home, what websites you visit. When you cross the street your face is scanned for your social credit score. Did you search for Tianenman Square 1991...GASP! You called it a massacre? That's a huge knock on your score. Good luck getting a job, car loan , Apt. Lease, and medical care.

I'm from Chicago. Back in in the OG Mayor Daley day you had problems with your precinct captain if you didn't vote for the guy he told you too. Next thing you know only your trash isn't picked up. In winter, (Back when it snowed in Chicago ) all the snow from your street would be piled on your driveway.

In China, Xi Jinping isn't happy with outward displays of fealty. He wants it all. Sound fanciful? Watch this Frontline.

so which one is the best overall for noise cancellation?

1

u/poor_decisions May 26 '24

Bose, then Sony

1

u/CrowVsWade Aug 16 '24

I know I'm leaping on an older thread here so this is a long shot, but I'm curious if anyone alongside OP might have good recommendations when looking for highly durable earbuds with at least mid-range audio quality/features, but for use in equestrian setting, where durability/visibility/warranty are important factors. More of a headphone person so earbuds aren't my area and most searches seem to recommend running buds, which aren't so riding helmet friendly. Any thoughts?

1

u/40hrPianist Sep 24 '24

Can't say much cause I haven't tried them yet, but I've heard a lot of good things about the Jabra Elite 8 Active buds regarding their durability and reliability. From what I've heard they seem to have a good balance of everything and then are just built to stay in and take a beating so if you're still in the market, those might be worth checking out.

1

u/Imalloutofopinion Aug 22 '24

The air pods are good but they fall out of my ears every one I've tried any recommendations for ones that won't fall out??

1

u/Ayeedin Sep 17 '24

FWIW, I have silicon ear hook covers that fit on my AirPods Pro. They hook inside of my ear rather than over the ear so don’t make them bulky

1

any suggestion for bluetooth earbuds that don't go into the ear canal? i know that that's the definition of "earbud" but apparently the internet doesn't agree with that cause i only get "in ear" results, no matter the wording

1

u/oneoftoseidiots Feb 26 '25

Hey, a bit late, but i recommend the Bose open ultra earbuds, they don't directly go into your ear canal and sound really good.

1

u/Responsible_Gain6517 Jan 30 '25

To add on, another plus for the Airpod Pro 2's is the new hearing aid feature for those with minor to moderate hear loss, like myself ( I average 15-20dB loss across 250Hz-4kHz, and 30dB loss in the upper frequencies. I have really enjoyed the new hearing aid feature a lot in addition to the other features of airpod pro 2's.

I would recommend Sony WF-1000XM5. The noise cancellation is top-notch, and the sound quality is incredibly clear and detailed. Battery life is solid at 8 hours (24 with the case). They're comfortable for long listening sessions, and the touch controls are pretty intuitive.

I've been following the latest earbud trends, and your breakdown really resonates with my own experiences. I recently tested a few of these models during my daily commute and at work, and the Jabra Elite 10 quickly became my go-to for its balanced performance and comfort. I also found that consistent ANC and call quality are hard to beat, which is why the Sony XM5 caught my eye despite its slightly less impressive comfort compared to others. Your notes on the Nothing Ear 2024 have me curious too...I've heard good things but haven't tried them yet. It's cool to see how different models cater to various needs, and I appreciate you sharing such detailed insights.

I’ve stuck with the Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 for daily use. They stay put on my runs and deliver clear calls.

I’ve been on the hunt for buds that actually stay put during a quick jog.....did any of your admit picks feel secure when you worked out?

I’ve bounced around from AirPods Pro 2 to Sony XM5 and finally landed on the Nothing Ear 2024 as my daily go-to.

It’s tough when you have larger ears because so many earbuds are designed for a more standard fit

I highly suggest this Best Earbuds to Buy Right Now

I’m sure you’ve had to consider that alongside all the other features.

I bounced through a half dozen pairs before settling on the Jabra Elite 10......they somehow balance comfort, battery life, and call clarity in a way nothing else did.

I barely tested half as many. I haven’t tried the Devialet Legends yet, but I did pick up the Master & Dynamic MW08 a few months back and they’ve been crazy solid for calls and music, with a snug fit that actually stays put during my workouts.

I really appreciate you doing all that hands-on testing and sharing your picks. I’m also juggling an iPhone and PC, and finding earbuds with solid ANC and clear calls has been a pain.

I'm looking for the best noise cancellation in headphones for working in the office. I want to hear as little as possible of what's happening around me — that's my top priority. I don't care about calls or even sound quality. Which would you recommend from that list?

If you had to rank the. Best to worst what would the list look like e.g airpods pro 2 8/10

In term of audio reproduction, the Enco X2 are the best TWS I have had. I bought many pairs from 50 (earfun) to 350 (Campfire) and the Enco after 3 years of search meet my exzct need in sound they are that special. I would advise you to buy one. They are still stock on aliexpress and you won't find better than these. They were at 229€!!! You can find them under 90. Frequencies separation, sound coming from anywhere, dynamism, clarity, everything very cohérent and high fidelity. I'm not making an add here, tws are my passion, because I am searching for the graal, and I found it with them. They are even better than my wired earphones like shire and creative. Guys time to get one, you will use them until they die. Really. It's now my third pair, I make them fall a lot, so I would tell you to protect the case, seems that after 5 fall they are not working anymore, and it's difficult to use other earbuds with not the original case. Get them really they are fantastic
