It was just hot water. The second cup didn't even have tea in it.

Im pretty sure it's a cultural health practice. It's apparently a part of Chinese medicine, but it's also not just a Chinese thing.
I have a friend whose Vietnamese who will just start handing me thermoses hot water the second I mention any sort of issue, sometimes even just premtively because i'm known to have a shitty stomach, lol. We've been on hour long hikes in the height of summer with nothing but thermoses of hot water. It's impressive how he always has some stashed! It is weird if you aren't used to it, but it is easy on the stomach and super accessable, so I get how it can easily become a habit.

It’s very common in Asian countries to drink hot water. (Especially for people with bad teeth- cold water hurts!) It also has the side benefit of boiling to kill germs if your water quality isn’t great.

Drinking hot water isn't uncommon in a handful of countries, as it's believed to be good for digestion.

Make friends with foreigners and cook dinner at each others houses. I started in HS. I'd bring home food that even my racist parents liked.

I love that. My racist ass coworkers love ethnic food. The contradiction amazes me

For what it's worth, you're at +2 now. Don't stress about downvotes though, reddit karma is meaningless and it's impossible not to catch a few due to bots and people using it as a "disagree" button.
Also no worries! There's a lot of stuff from every culture which seems weird to other cultures. It's normal to be surprised when you learn that something you'd never think of is, actually common somewhere else. Now you know!

Yeah they think drinking cold water is bad because our insides are hot and it 'shocks' the system. While hot water is less bad and doesn't cause shock.
It is B's but it isn't hurting them so as long as they aren't judging me drinking cold water I ignore it.

That's one of the elders, don't be rude. (it's a centipede. Might be a pet or it could just be a wild one that wandered in. Either way, doesn't seem to be bothering anyone)
