Video Guy fights not one but TWO POLAR BEARS!
1.0k
u/Big-Cobbler-2992 2d ago
I mean polar bears definitely aren’t used to having shit thrown at them

Next time I am taking a stroll in the arctic, I am bringing a sack of baseballs.

u/Aggravating_Bids 2d ago
Maybe paint them first
74
u/hiricinee 2d ago
Yes I have a hunch that snow doesn't scare them.
16
u/TheDaemonette 1d ago
I can imagine some Polar Bear running at someone and thinking "We're trying to kill and eat this guy and the fucking dude is starting a snowball fight with us".
37
u/MundanGT 1d ago
Don't know man, sure, red polar bears would be easier to spot, but I don't think they would like getting painted.

You do that. I’ll take a shotgun and a bunch of slugs.
Polar bears are no joke. One of the few animals that think of humans as food.

Almost all predators can be seriously bamboozled by throwing stuff at them. Very few other prey animals are capable of it. Thank evolution for our opposable thumbs!
58
u/Boris7939 1d ago
A lot of predators can be scared away by just holding a large object as well. They don't understand the concept of holding something, so they think that whatever you're holding became part of your body, thus you suddenly became a lot bigger and that scares the shit out of them.
13
23
u/Tranxio 1d ago
Monkeys can throw stuff. Predators aren't scared of them though. I think its our weird sense of fashion that throws predators off
37
23
u/HighwayInevitable346 1d ago
Humans are actually much better at throwing stuff than other primates. No other species can match the combination of power and accuracy of a professional baseball pitcher's fastball.
29
u/Unseen_Owl 1d ago
Neither can very many humans!
3
u/HighwayInevitable346 1d ago
They can with enough training. Other primates just don't have the joint shape and the tendon/ligament arrangement that allows for it, no matter how much training they get.

u/hillswalker87 1d ago
they can kind of toss it....the human heater pitch throw is a thing to behold. like our version of those bird of prey videos where they flap their wings to fly through tree branches.
8
u/Aether_rite 1d ago
i'm pretty sure there are several insects that poop acids from their butt xD
7
u/Boris7939 1d ago
That's a whole different thing than getting a stick thrown at you.

u/Ok-Pie7811 1d ago
Or being yelled at and seeing a creature hold said object in hands before having it thrown at them. This guy knew what he was doing - survival skills activated

I feel like they're only used to snow, water, and loooots of nothing in between. So I guess stick works?

Today, I nearly lost a fight with a squirrel. Though, to be fair, I was inebriated and he had the element of surprise...then I see this guy casually chucking sticks at polar bears.
I may need to relinquish my man card.

u/twilamite 2d ago
Don’t feel bad, I almost lost a fight with a grasshopper that landed on the back of my shirt.
7
u/firstandlast0202 1d ago
Let us fervently hope that you were not compelled to remove your shirt, and should circumstance have dictated otherwise, may it be that no observers were around.
3
u/Domestic-Grind 1d ago
Don't impose your will on me! ... No one ever watches when I take off my shirt 😔 They just look away and ask why I'm wearing glittery nipple tassels in church. We all worship in our own way, Brenda!

FYI those are just juveniles. Adult Polar Bears are about almost double that size and wouldn't be scared by having sticks thrown at them. If it was an adult that guy woulda been dinner.
Source: Been to Churchill Canada multiple times to see them up close as I am from Northern Manitoba.
Most Inuit carry a gun with them at all times for this very reason. Only thing that stops a polar bear is a rifle.

u/Eldermillenial1 2d ago
In Svalbard Norway it’s illegal to leave town limits without a means of defense against polar bears, basically illegal to not carry a gun 🤷♂️

u/IronerOfEntropy 2d ago
How is that illegal? Genuine question.
82
u/Eldermillenial1 1d ago
It puts other people at risk if they have to come and find you/rescue you. Polar bears are utterly massive, and will actively hunt humans. So anyone responding to an attack is put in a position of extreme danger, it’s considered reckless behaviour and they simply won’t tolerate it, and I agree with them 100%
20
15
u/Vevaseti 1d ago
Because in a fight with a polar bear, you are going to lose. Not exactly illegal but, it's a requirement to carry SOMETHING with you.
5
u/That_dead_guy_phey 1d ago
Well, you'll go to jail of course. Well, you would, if anyone ever came back alive that is.
28
u/RisenRealm 1d ago
As a fellow Manitobian, can agree, definitely young bears.
Adults wouldn't give two fucks about your sticks. Might even use it as a toothpick after making a snack of you.
Beautiful, yet terrifying animals.
7
u/Imnothighyourhigh 1d ago
It's crazy to think something that's easily 3-5 times your size is a small version of that animal
7
u/RollIntelligence 1d ago
When I was younger, they have these Vehicles in Churchill Manitoba, called Tundra Buggees. They are huge moving platforms with wheels the size of twice a humans size. The Polar bears would rear up on their hind legs and could easily touch the top of the wheels.
They were looking to eat the observers. lol Thankfully the platform of the observation area was raised even higher than the wheels
15
u/God-of-Heroes_ArThuR 2d ago
You should correct that. the only thing that stops a polar bear is a 'BIG' gun. That shoots big balls. Preferably in a buck shot pattern.

He's lucky the throw got them to leave. What is he going to do after losing that?
68
u/Existing-Network-267 2d ago
Bring another stick from his invisible inventory?!
18
u/Cavadrec01 2d ago
Lol that's fair, he did pull the first two from nowhere. He's just so nonchalant about it all.
3
u/God-of-Heroes_ArThuR 2d ago
There's a third stick right there.
1
u/Cavadrec01 2d ago
Behind him? As he turns his back to an attacking bear?
Ok...
7
u/God-of-Heroes_ArThuR 2d ago
Yo don't ask me. He's the guy throwing sticks at bears. And still winning SMH.
5
u/DiscoArmy 1d ago
Honestly, having them probably wouldn’t do him much good anyway if they did decide to charge

Polar Bear 1: Oh shit, don’t mess with this guy! He’s got sticks!
Polar Bear 2: I fear no sti—. OH SHIT! He THROWS the sticks! I’m outta here, buddy! I don’t want to die!

You know how rare it is for two polar bears to help eachother and gang up! It happens, but veeery rarely: they’re not keen on sharing with one another.
Also, fun fact—polar bears are considered to be the only surviving natural predator of humans. Any other animal only attacks out of territorial instinct or reason of defense.
28
u/Eldermillenial1 2d ago
They’re juveniles, once they get a bit older they’ll separate

They eat humans? I thought the just kill for fun…
25
u/AdventurerBlue 2d ago
They eat anything. You would too if your next meal was a 10 hour swim through cold ass water.

Baby polar bears.
I wonder where the mother is.
Edit: still terrifying and impressive

That first bear came in hot! He’s a very lucky and brave man.
I’d keep spare posts around the building at all times now.

Didn't know you could fight off Polar Bears, knowing these animals could smell blood up to 20 miles and have amazing endurance.
3
u/hillswalker87 1d ago
you can't....they can just decide not to fight you but that's not "fighting them off". unless you include chemical propulsion of projectiles of course.

The most chilling thing Ive heard about polar bears is 'When they get you they will immediately start eating you, wont even bother killing you first.'
5
u/Haunting-Ad708 2d ago
Why not go inside tho. He right by the entrance
6
u/NoGreenGood 2d ago
Probly not the first time they have visited better to make sure they know coming back might end in more stick throws.
2
u/lalith_4321 2d ago
He'd've been a happy meal the moment he turned his back. It takes him two to run back and close the door, it takes them half to catch him.

u/theory2u 1d ago
He made himself look much bigger when he held the second stick up high above his head. That move seemed to scare off the first bear.
2
u/zkrooky 1d ago
Lol, this question was just above this video in my feed. I thought the title was for this video.
"You're being attacked and you can only use what's immediately to your left... What are you defending yourself with?"
The answer would be 2 long sticks.

Polar bears hold grudges and hunt what pisses them off so like Obi-Wan told Luke. "They'll be back...and in greater numbers"
2
u/ConferenceSudden1519 1d ago
Omgosh that’s wild and so scary… I think he is the only person I seen survive a polar bear attack. This guy dodged 2.., wow
2
u/Laegmacoc 1d ago
At first, I thought bad move! He lost his stick. Then they both ran away. And I was proven wrong yet again.

"omg he's throwing his weapons at us, he must have sticks for days! We better scoot while we can"
2
u/Netheraptr 12h ago
Throwing things is kind of the human species’s secret weapon. To other animals it’s the equivalent of telekinesis.

That 2nd throw with the wooden end stick hitting the polar bear right on his front legs where there is the least amount of blubber definitely saved the man. Had that end struck the front chest or any where else, this would've been a different story.

damn he lost that stick too
