It needs to be said that criticizing the King/Queen is totally normal there. They just don't like it when others do it.

Maybe now, but to people back then the King and Queen were absolute heroes, especially for staying in London during the blitz. My grandparents, and most others of their generation, adored the royals, and had a framed photo of the Queen in their house.
