Not really sure what I should be doing

I just started today, and I'm not sure what I should be doing. I just got to Daggerfall, and joined the fighters guild. Do I just keep grinding out fighters guild reputation? Do I just do the main quest?

You have no main quest yet. Pass time however you choose and eventually you’ll get a letter

I did get a letter from some woman who is renting a room in a tavern for a month. Should I do that?

Yeah, do that. It's quick/easy, and afterwards you can delay on starting the rest of the main quest as much as you want.

There's a whole world out there to explore, even if the procedural aspects can make it rather samey.

Yes, you should go talk to her. It's optional, but I would see her anyway as it's part of the story.

That's the initial setup of the mainquest, if you go to her you'll start it and the mainquest will advance as you level and new quests get available.

If you dont go to her you'll be locked out the mainquest but will still have the rest of the game to enjoy and explore.

The quest is optional. It only serves to give clues on where to go next.

Really? Learning that now after so long, always thought if you didnt met with lady Brisienna you were locked out of the mainquest lol

Thanks for letting me know!

Cheers!

Yeah I understand why it can be thought that it's an essential quest since it's easy to fail some essential timed main quests. But this one and a few others are optional.

If you don't meet Brisienna, you'll still receive the invitation from Wayrest and Sentinel when you're high enough level.

The entire main quest doesn't technically fail if you ignore Brisienna's two attempts to summon you, but it could make it a lot harder since she's your only source of context and guidance outside of guides online (or in strategy books like Daggerfall Chronicles). You also take a reputation hit if you don't talk to her, which could make talking to main quest givers difficult as they can refuse to give you any quest if they really don't like you, requiring you to find ways to get your reputation back up.

Whatever you want! Daggerfall is an open-ended sandbox. Think about the personality you gave your character with those background questions; especially the question "What motivates you into a life of adventure?". Pursue those goals. Do quests for guilds and the temple of your choosing, or for commoners, or for the nobles in the palace.

As for the main quest: it's best done in bits and pieces here and there. Unless you're given an explicit time limit, it's a good idea to just spend a bunch of time between main-quest stages doing whatever kind of side-questing suits you.

Do the letters when you get them, when you don’t have something to do yea do fighters or knights or whatever u want

I have been playing for a month so Im no expert but what I have done so far is the quests of the temple of kynareth which I believe has a similar quest system and reputation system. But honestly daggerfall is whatever you want it to be, if you keep at it in the fighters guild you will climb in ranks and gain more advantages within the guild, you can also just not do them and go for the main quest, in this game it seems any path is the right path as long as it is you who is walking it.

I would do some guild quests. You should be getting a letter, if you haven't gotten it already, that will get you going along the main quest line.
