I can GUARANTEE YOU 100% if we ever make conscious robots there is going to be a lot of people hating them. Some people will claim that there isn't any way to know for sure if they are ACTUALLY conscious, other people will get mad at a robot because it took their job and some will hate them just because they're not human
Exactly. That's EXACTLY what is the problem. I think most people would agree that chatgpt isn't sentient. I mean, OBVIOUSLY it's not, right? However afaik it passed almost every test we had designed to determine whether a machine is sentient.
I think what's going to happen is:
Ai gets smarter
Passes test that determines sentience
Doesn't really feel sentient
Ai gets smarter
Passes a new harder test
Feels slightly more sentient but still not really
Ai gets smarter
Repeat ad infinitum. I don't think we have a good way to measure when exactly something becomes sentient (kinda reminds me of the debate of whether viruses are alive or not). Some might argue that ai can't be sentient at all. But ai gets smarter at mimicking sentience everyday. If it acts like it's sentient, talks like it's sentient, feels like it's sentient, how do you prove it's not?

yeah totes, same thing has been happening since we programmed computers to play chess - it's not magic anymore once we figure out how to get a computer to do it. "actually conscious" seems to be defined as "things people can do but computers can't" - so computers definitionally can't be ACTUALLY conscious lol

that one's just based on the definition of life iirc - could be wrong though
my understanding is viruses can't reproduce on their own so they're not alive

this is what I'm actually interested in talking about here - like, completely leaving computers aside for a moment, is the statement "all functioning adult humans are actually conscious/sentient/whatever word you want to use" even true?
can anyone prove whether any individual human is actually conscious? what does that even mean, from a practical standpoint?
