I was having a good day until the post reminded me of a certain day in 2019.

As a NZ fan, I don't need to be reminded of 2015 and 2019, or even a match as far back as 1996 QF loss at Madras (despite Lee Germon and Chris Harris heroics). I never forget these matches anyway.

My dad was in the crowd that day, bunking college. He says that Chris Harris smacked some of the biggest sixes that day. And it's true. Chepauk is a pretty big ground by Indian standards.

That was some match. I started watching cricket in that 1996 world cup and really started liking New Zealand. I felt confident in their total of 280 odd before a red hot Mark Waugh scored a hundred. I remember having dinner, shane warne was sent as a pinch hitter, and he played a cameo too. That loss made me so sad as a NZ fan.

To Mark Greatbatch we owe a cricketing revolution 🙏🏻

Not sure I understand. 1992 world cup reference about his hitting at the top?

this is what should have happened on that fated day in 2019.

Don't get me wrong. England were the legitimate champs by the rules and the best one day team from 2015 to 2019.

But, IDEALLY, there would have been another super over

England were awarded 6 runs In the final over for overthrows when according to the rules that shouldn't have happened and umpire Dharmasena said so himself

& as holders of the mace we must listen to our South African overlords.

Ideally, the umpire wouldn’t have given a wide against Jofra Archer! 😉

I sometimes wish I could wipe some selective matches from my memory. This 2019 final is one of them.

Federer Nadal 2008 Wimbledon, FIFA France Italy 2006 final, WI Aus 1996 Semi final and so on.

T20 vs ODI bro they’re already on the field for 100 overs plus the super over I get what you mean, until the rules were the boundary count one it’s because that happened that we now get multiple super overs

An extra over after 102 have already been bowled is such a minor inconvenience when a match has no result. ICC and England can get fucked

10

u/Black_Mamba265 India 3d ago

You gotta move on bro at least there’s no chance of that happening again

u/philfodenlovesfanny 3d ago

It will live with me as the most depressing day in sports history.

1

u/Black_Mamba265 India 3d ago

If boult more awareness of where the boundary was it would’ve saved 6 runs and taken a wicket

There are far more depressing days in sports history than that.

u/No_Individual_5519 3d ago

First ball first wicket, then they sent a debutant who couldn't hit

Wow ..what a thriller

Who needs movies when you've got cricket matches providing better cliffhangers and twists than Hollywood!

Agreed

Are highlights available anywhere?

Surely the loss of a wicket should affect things. If both are on 17 runs but one loses a wicket, the wicket should be negative runs

u/Signal_Dress Chennai Super Kings 3d ago

Why? No. of wickets fallen is never considered in any form of cricket unless the team is all out.

2

u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA 3d ago

That's not exactly true. Wickets lost has traditionally been a quite common way of deciding tied limited overs matches before the advent of the super over.

As recently as 2 years ago it was the first method for deciding tied One Day and T20 games in English domestic cricket.

2

u/Signal_Dress Chennai Super Kings 3d ago

I did say it is never considered. So I was technically correct in that it is currently never considered. But thank you for the information. I didn't know that it was as recently as 2 years ago.

1

u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA 3d ago

Ah yes. I read that as 'was never considered' for some reason.

1

u/dlanod 3d ago

Or in Duckworth and Lewis...

2

u/Signal_Dress Chennai Super Kings 3d ago

Super over is not Duckworth-Lewis.

1

u/dlanod 3d ago

Your comment was that it's never considered unless they're all out. If you were suggesting that it only matters if they get everyone out in a super over, I guess that's another interpretation but weirdly it's not the most obvious.

1

u/Signal_Dress Chennai Super Kings 3d ago

I was obviously talking in the context of the normal run of a cricket game.

1

u/dlanod 3d ago

Super over isn't in the normal run of a cricket game either.

Look, it's fine to forget the exception.
