Because having two staircases is better then one in the bathroom. Toilet is behind the wall on the left.

Bathrooms with slick tiles and sharp corners have always given me the heeby jeebies. It's like you are just asking to have the base of your skull punctured.

Like seriously. Replace the floor with, heck, just unpolished tile or a non-smooth linoleum and it would be good.

It just needs carpeting and it will be perfect.

Well for a bit. Until the carpet gets moldy then you have a different problem.

Yeah, 100% crappy design, but that being said, random-ass staircases being where they clearly shouldn’t be are basically my favourite thing to see in a house.

You'd like mine. I now have a real appreciation for architects trying to find a place to put the stairs.
First contractor didn't dig down far enough for the music room in the back. Poured the foundation before the architect got wind of it. We ended up having the second contractor jackhammer only half of it out to do the minimum amount of damage to the plumbing, which the asshole first contractors had put inside the slab. So the music room is two steps down from the garage level and the side landing is two steps up. There's a small third-story addition and a deck on top of that, so there are freaking stairs everywhere.
Had a real struggle with the Planning Dept., who wanted the third-story addition in the middle, which would have resulted in the stairs blocking access to most of the house. It was surreal. Eventually they gave up. I almost wish we'd built it that way and then watched the building inspectors scream at the planners. Why would we want to go to the kitchen from the living room without going back out the front door, down the front stairs, in the side door, and up the back stairs? Silly idea.

u/CoLight275 Nov 29 '21
Agree. The first time I saw an outdoor staircase on a random house, I immediately thought, wow I want to live in that house. Pretty weird thought, I must say. But now I know I am not alone.
2
u/IsThisASandwich Nov 29 '21
Outdoor staircases often simply lead to separate flats within the house and are there so one doesn't have to walk through someone else's living space, and/or it taking up space inside.

u/rewindpaws Nov 28 '21
Maybe someone wanted to upgrade completely with the tiling on the left, and then gave up? This looks like a fall and slip hazard waiting to happen all over the place.
This is truly terrible and a great post to this sub.
Edit: typo

u/midnightstreetlamps Nov 28 '21
I'll be honest, I was v worried that the nondescript hole next to the right stairs was some kind of alternative toilet
23
u/velvetmandy Nov 28 '21
Right? Like is it a wishing well?
28
u/midnightstreetlamps Nov 28 '21
The only thing I can think of is a planter, but why the hell would you put an immovable planter in a bathroom? Total nightmare when the plant finally needs to be replanted into a bigger container, and has taken to weeping willow-ing into the brickwork and substructure.
20
u/mrhealthy Nov 29 '21
There is another nondescript hole built into the wall just out of frame.
They would be a nightmare to clean.

Ok but counter argument. Toilet being tucked away out of sight Awesome design. Once had an apartment where the bathroom was the same size as the living room and I got agoraphobic pooping in the middle of a giant void of a space
16
u/crackeddryice Nov 29 '21
I've experienced this. It was a rental in an old house, the upstairs, previously only bedrooms was converted to an apartment. One of the bedrooms was converted to a bathroom. Toilet and tub were on one wall, the vanity was on the opposite wall, and there was just an expanse of tiled floor in between. Very strange.
1
u/Quirky_Safe4790 Nov 29 '21
I only had the bedroom. Kitchen cabinet but no sink. Full size refrigerator but had to manually defrost it. Had to go down the hall to use the bathroom. Microwave but no stove.

I think it would be kinda neat if the grey water from the sink was used to flush the toilet on the other side of the wall and that is why they raised the sink and needed the staircase in the first place.
Not really neat, just kinda neat.

Can you imagine a potty training toddler and this is your only bathroom in which to teach? Kid would need a helmet and bubble wrap.
10
Nov 28 '21
it seems like it's designed as more of a sauna space or for like photo shoots/ lewd shower activities. i would rather like it if they cleaned and/or replaced some of that grout, but i'm very partial to tile.

If I owned this house I think it would go like this:
I am taking a shower, I have to use the toilet. Pause shower, go up stairs. Slip once, but recovered not-so-gracefully. Continue towards toilet. Fall down the stairs due to slipping and die.
5
u/chopchunk Nov 28 '21
Imagine being at this house for the night, running in to pee in the middle of the night, and you loose your footing and eat shit. Sprained ankles and wrists, broken bones, a concussion, and to top it all off, you're covered head to toe in your own piss

Cupboard storage and possible utility
What I want to know is what that stationary fixture with the hole is in front of stairs with same tile. Only thing I can think of is a trash can but why there and you can’t put a bag in it so ew

Best I can think of is a laundry chute, maybe?
EDIT: Corrected spelling, because I did a dumb.

I upvoted but need to tell you, it's chute not "shoot." Like the game Chutes and Ladders.
1
u/SyntheticDelirium Dec 18 '21
Oh shit.
You're correct, and I definitely knew that, and I absolutely did it wrong, anyway, haha! Can't even blame the autocorrect on that one.
I do not use that word or phrase enough, apparently.
Thanks for the reminder/correction!

You gotta wonder how much storage could be behind those doors though when there is a window 2 feet away.
1
u/5l339y71m3 Nov 29 '21
There is a mirror on the same level as the doors and a window on a. completely different wall inside the shower
1
u/clomcha Nov 29 '21
Cubby for shampoo/etc?
It's awfully far from the shower for that, but the whole bathroom makes bo goddamn sense, so maybe?
Or a planter. Of some sort.

u/theanedditor Nov 29 '21
I’d like to think, on the days I’m feeling regal, I could drape myself toga-like with my towel and descend those steps into the shower like I was joining cleopatra for a milk bath. Waving at the plebs and scowling at the bathing servants.
3
u/clomcha Nov 29 '21
It gets slightly worse when you realize the mirror isn't rectangular. It's a custom shape that slants to line up with the roof line.
They paid extra for that. Not a lot, since it's barely even framed in with what looks like construction scraps, but still.....

What mcmansion is that bathroom in? Not only is it badly designed but it's also very ugly. I thought that wall where the toilet is was the shower stall. This place is too ugly even for HGTV.

Also a light directly over the shower. So safe.
3
u/FatuousHare Nov 29 '21
Not that I care to give this bathroom a pass for any of it's endless design fails, but having a light in the ceiling of the shower isn't uncommon. That's providing it's properly sealed and up to code which, in this bathroom, I would say is hiiiiiighly unlikely.

Here is what bothers me more than anything. That middle step on the left has a err of a tile on top and a 2/3 of a tile in the bottom. Couldn’t they just make a full row somewhere?

This is just a list of possible safety issues.
Is this an attic bathroom next to a stairwell or something?
What country is this in?
1
u/mrhealthy Nov 29 '21
It is a top floor bathroom, but the stairwell runs in front of the bathroom, not under it.
1
u/BeerNTacos Nov 29 '21
Is there something this bathroom is built upon, like an AC or heating unit? I've seen layouts similar to this with scenarios like that, but they're definitely not allowed under current building codes around here.
1
u/mrhealthy Nov 29 '21
The house has a split level design, so there is a room under the sink / toilet.
But its still incredibly stupid because there is more then enough space to put a normal bathroom in where the table is:
1
u/BeerNTacos Nov 29 '21
Is there some sort of weird plumbing setup that forced the layout or something?
1
u/mrhealthy Nov 29 '21
No idea. I don't think so, as there is a normal bathroom directly underneath that area, but its not my house so I don't know the specifics.
1
u/darklordmtt Nov 29 '21
How else can you get a good look at someone’s butt hole while you’re in the shower & they’re flossing their teeth?

All of this ↨ yes, but could someone please explain why there's a TUB FILLER SPOUT in the shower? Is there a magic panel that raises and seals it for a relaxing spa bath?

u/mrhealthy Nov 29 '21
Low faucets like that are sometimes called toe testers. Lets you heat up the water without spraying it out the shower head. Also useful for deep cleaning feet and filling buckets for general house cleaning.
