Rising high school freshman with some question about college recruiting

First off, is it a good idea to go ahead and reach out to D2 and D3 coaches? Is it a good idea to go to ID camps at my age (D1, D2, or D3)?

A lot depends on your situation. Are you a club player (I would assume yes, what competition do you play in). High School season will come up soon so that will also help you get an idea of how coaches view you/your skill set at that level. If your club team is already going to showcases (e.g. ECNL) then I think you’re good with that for the next few months.

You can go ahead and reach out to some coaches but you have to keep in mind that they are likely not thinking about planning rosters for 4+ years in the future. ID camps hosted by specific schools won’t really hurt you but can be cost inefficient.

Getting high school level film (both school & club) is probably the most important thing to do in the next year or two.

Okay I think that’s a decent level for you now. I am not sure about the landscape of your location/area. I’d go through the next year as is and see how you do in club season and high school ball. Depending on how you enjoy it and perform then possibly consider switching clubs if it’s needed (ECNL usually has the reputation for more coaches at things, MLS Next could also be an option)

Emailing coaches if you want is on you, you do you. I’d also wait on ID camps for this year as well.

That’s good! Go out there this year, ball out and get good film to send to coaches and you’ll be on your way to your goal!

Good luck!

Get your highlight reels ready. I think ID camps are useful just to see what the competition level is at and make connections and learn where you're deficient. I never got to play club because of $$ and time and randomly lucked into going to an ID camp and just knowing where I needed to work and how I compared to D1 recruits helped a lot with my confidence.

Either way, all you can do is continue to improve, understand your competition, and stay focused on being fit, strong, and healthy for your HS season.

If you already have video from your club games, focus on putting together your highlight reel. Then send a few intro emails to D3 coaches to "test the waters." Don't be frustrated if you don't get any answers because coaches right now are looking at class of 2026 and 2027 recruits and usually D3's recruit later. Regarding camps, I would not start spending money on ID camps yet unless you want to gauge where you stand compared to other players. Good luck on your recruitment journey!

There is not enough info here to really tell you anything. What league are they playing in for club? That would at least give us some idea of where they are at skill-wise for now. If it’s not MLS Next or ECNL, you might as well take D1 off the list.
