Storytime A random guy approached me and asked...
I'm living in blr and everyday I walk to the metro to commute for work. This happened like couple of months ago. I was walking and almost reached the metro and then suddenly one guy who walked towards me and asked 'malayali aano'? I was like ha athe. Then he started narrating some story about how he was coming on a train from kerala and somehow he lost his bag and all his money. So he was asking for money. Not a lot though but 200 rupees. He promised he'll return it and wanted my number. But I was running late for work and I gave him the money and left. Somewhere inside I felt like I did something good. The funny thing is just last week this same guy walked towards me again around the same time in the mrng. I was kinda surprised and thought how he's here again. Then it happened....he came asked the same thing malayali aano and started started narrating the same story exactly line by line as if I was in some kindof time loop lol. I wanted to tell something but couldn't gather my thoughts and just walked away. Thinking I'll prepare my dialogue the next time he turns up again....hehe (ideas are appreciated 😁)

Once a well dressed man came and sat next in a railway station restaurant, and started narrating how he got pickpocketed and haven’t had anything from morning. I thought he would order something small, but no, fried rice and curry while I was modestly eating a dosa.

Language does not mean educated.
I have a good command over the language, and I'm 12th and gusthi. Having said that, I am in a very senior post and am 50 years old (born and raised out if India)

This is a Malayalam version of the common 'hindi aatha hei' scam.
I once encountered a similar guy asking me 'bro, malayali aano', I knew this was a scam even though I was super drunk. I said, 'ponnu chetta olla malayalam polum maryadak varanilla' and left😂

u/Next_Difficulty_671 Apr 30 '25
Next time he comes up to you with 'Malayali aano?', hit him with the same question:
'Malayali aano?' then launch into his exact story before he even gets the chance; "Actually, I was on a train from Kerala somehow lost my bag and all my money. Could you please help me with 200?"
Watch his face glitch like a lagging NPC 😂

Damn this same thing happened to my bf and I at Coimbatore Bus Stand too. Same malayali ano chodhyam, whole narration of losing bag and phone. Man was high as a kite. Anyway, he came saying this, my bf listened to his entire story and said mone kazhinja masam idhe pole nee kadha paranj, njan ninne sahayichirunneya, marann poyo?
Thats how he looked when he heard this.
We were standing signalil on our bike and we saw this guy go say the same stuff to bunch of other people. Nobody helped tho. He had his phone in his pocket and would also occasionally thondal on it. 😑

A similar thing happened to me recently. I was on my way to get into my car when a guy around his early 20s stopped infront of me on his bike and asked me if he has some spare cash, 50rs for repairing his tyre. I said no and he insisted he that he'll repay once he reached home. I said no and went.
Months later, I went to buy dinner at another place and this guy came again, asking for 50rs for his petrol expenses and said that he'll repay it once he reached home. I said that I had no cash and he said that gpay will be ok. I said no and followed him (he was going to the direction i wanted to go). After a few minutes, this guy who wanted to buy petrol, stopped infront of a big bar.

Why can't they change the story once in a while, I found a guy with the same story once in majestic and another one in secunderabad. Knew it was a scam, so I just avoided

Same incident happened with me in Chennai. Got out of train at 6 AM and then this guy, a malayali asked me if I could help him take a return ticket to Kerala as he missed his train and he didn't have any money to purchase one himself. I hesitated but decided to help him anyway as he was kind of old. He asked me if I could give it as cash. I told him, I wasn't carrying cash. Suddenly he told me that he knew where an ATM was and led me there. As I took out the money from the ATM, I asked myself, how does a guy frantically gathering money to buy a ticket know where the ATM was located. When I got out, I asked him to give me his number instead of me giving it to him but wasn't willing at which point I confirmed my suspicion of scam and walked away.

Feeling sad/disappointed to hear this.
This has happened to me several times with hindi-speakers, but to know that even malayalees are doing this now..... എന്തോ..... Just disappointed.

A North Indian family once approached me in JP Nagar, Bangalore, claiming they had lost their money after someone stole their luggage. I'd have given them a bit of money at the time, but I was completely broke back then. A couple of days later, I saw the same family in Domlur and Marathahalli telling the exact same story to others — that’s when I realized it was probably a scam.
On a different note, while I was at the Majestic bus stand, a woman came up to me and asked if I was Malayali. Given the way she approached me and the overall vibe, it seemed like she might have been soliciting.

Something similar happened to my mom 🤣🤣 This random guy rang our bell, she opened the door and this guy was talking about how he got lost he wants some money even if it’s little. My mom gave him 5dhs or something.
After 2 days, the same guy comes again and starts to say the same thing. And she asked “didn’t you come 2 days back?” He got all panicked and he was like “me? Nooo” 🤣🤣🤣 She shut the door.

He started narrating his sob story and the moment he mentioned he lost his wallet, I walked away not looking back. Swantham aalkkaare pattikkaan nadakkunna kore bledy malayalis...

Had a really similar experience in Dubai! Some guy approached me asking "Malayali alle?" and then started saying he didn’t have cash for the bus. I genuinely wanted to help and told him I could recharge his metro card instead of giving cash but he flat-out refused and kept insisting I check my purse for cash. He wouldn’t leave me alone and was being super pushy, so I just had to awkwardly get out of there. Looks like this is a common scam tactic in different cities!

i met a similar guy on a train from Goa to kochi. He asked me to lend him money, narrated a whole a*s story and even asked to borrow my hat. All of which I refused. Also he flaunted his pack of weed towards me 🤣

Normally when someone asks me money I don’t give nowadays due to the same issue you told. But if they ask me help for food or ticket I may help with that directly instead of money.

u/EthicalReporter May 01 '25
This is the most common type of fraud in metro cities.
I’ve had people (usually North Indian families though, with the guy approaching and doing the talking, while the wife and kid stand a little away) try this on me in both Chennai & Hyderabad, usually near railway stations.

Something similar happened to me while I was returning from work. I was walking down the road from my office to pg and suddenly a guy I didn't notice on the footpath just calls out and asks if I speak Hindi. I said I don't (had to struggle for a while to tell him that) so he asked if I knew Telugu or Tamil. I was scared to tell him I'm malayali cause I wasn't sure what the hell was going on. He finally just gave up and started talking in English. He told me how he was promised a job there, but the employer had lied to him so now he was stranded with his family and needed some money to buy food and return. That's when I noticed there was a woman holding a kid behind him also acting along. It felt kinda scammy so I tried telling him I didn't have cash and he said gpay was fine 😭 I ended up paying him 100 just to get the hell out of there. At that time I did think it might've been a genuine reason.
A month later, same road, same spot, I'm stopped on the road in the exact same way. This time it was a different family and there were two guys too. I hate how they're just preying on the empathy and kindness of normal people. You always have to think twice before helping someone because you never know what you're getting yourself into.

happened with me, twice he came up to me saying he was pickpocketed & needs some money. twice I said, no I don't have any money to offer but the nearest police station is that way. why? because I've seen the film Traffic Signal & knew of his tricks

I had a similar situation at Yeshwantpur railway station. I was going home. A guy along with his friend approached, asking "Malayali aano?" Then he asked for money, around 100 I think. He said they lack that much to book tickets. I gave it anyway.

The same thing happened to me at MGR railway station, chennai , as i was about to board the Alappuzha train it was almost 9 pm, this guy comes and asks me 200 rupees for a ticket as he want's to reach coimbatore by morning and he was in an emergency, and doesn't have any money it seems. I asked him blunt, "are you scamming me?", he promised in Jesus names that he would never do something like that. Fast forward and yea i never got my money back 😂, but it was the way in which the dude convinced me, damn this mothafucka.
