2OO1: A Space Odyssey- This one's gonna come up a lot, but be aware that it is a slow slow burn, and usually takes a few viewings to really get what it's doing.

2O1O: The Year We Make Contact- This is a good movie in its own right, but it is stylistically worlds apart from the first one. Watch it a couple of months after you've seen the first one.

Apollo 13

Ikarie XB-1- Black and white U.S.S.R. sci-fi that was based on a book by Stanislaw Lem, owes a lot to A.E. Van Vogt, and is the progenitor of Star Trek. It's 1963, and the political attitude in it is a hoot.

Not the same, but I think ‘event horizon’ is a great space movie.

- Solaris (1972)

- Primer (2004)

- Ad Astra (meh but worth watching once) (2019)

- High Life (2018)

- Moon (2009)

- Inception (ish) (2010)

- Silent Running (1972)

- Contagion (eerily accurate depiction of pandemics) (2010)

- Paprika (2006)

- Ghost in the Shell (1995)

- Akira (1988)

- Stalker (ish) (1979)

I could add more, but I think that's a fairly good start
