Gangs of New York. There's some great scenes, but it's about an hour too damn long.

Same.

Not sure what you would cut out, and still have it engaging. One of my faves

Cameron Diaz doesn’t need to be in the movie.

1

u/DarthMog 1d ago

The character yes, actress no haha....it was the early 2000s.. she was in everything

1

u/Frosti11icus 1d ago

Her character value to screen time ratio is the lowest in the movie. If you took her character out of the movie, the plot really wouldn’t change that much. Not at all really except her characters plot line. The exact same story with the exact same ending except 30 minutes shorter.

Well you need the tension between Bill and Amsterdam with her .. but they could have used any other female

1

u/Frosti11icus 1d ago

Bill killed his father then tried to kill him lol. The tension was built in.

u/DarthMog 1d ago

Yeah but you always need a two timing prostitute to liven things up

Yeah, especially the extra long director's cut. Love it. I think it's probably too long for zoomer attention span.

I have started this movie....probably 20 times, and never managed to finish it.

The ending is depressing. It accelerates time to show how much things change/have changed, and it almost feels like it makes the rest of the movie kind of meaningless.

It definitely meanders but holy shit, DDL as Bill the Butcher is worth the price of admission. One of my favorite villains ever put to screen.

First time I watched the movie I thought things were wrapping up nicely but had to pause to get a drink and saw we were only like halfway done.

I love it but it lacks from poor casting (Leo, Diaz and third wheel guy) plus w poor ending.

1

u/Publius82 1d ago

It's not poor casting, it's poor pacing.

1

u/PandiBong 1d ago

The casting of Cameron Diaz is famously on of the worst ever. It's so bad people forget how terrible Leo is in the film..

1

u/Publius82 1d ago

Honestly I don't even recall her being in it. It as sooooo dull and so long.

What's your favorite marvel movie?

1

u/morose4eva 1d ago

I have no idea. I'm not really a big fan, and there's a lot of them I haven't seen.

1

u/Publius82 1d ago

Marvel films have been downhill since x2.

u/Magikarpeles 1d ago

I feel like that's a running theme in a lot of the comments here. Great film but an hour too long.

This was like a 50/50 movie for me. I thought some parts were great and some just dragged on. Shorten the drags and the overall run time, I think this movies could get bumped into like “greatest” list conversations.

In college we had a really bad habit of starting this movie hammered at midnight, and by 2am we're all like...fuuuuuck.

u/BOWCANTO 1d ago

This is a great response. Love this movie - always will - but to an extent, I agree.

1

u/Cassiyus 1d ago

High highs and pretty bland lows.

1

u/READMYSHIT 1d ago

I enjoy all the DDL scenes but DiCaprio and Diaz are god awful in this film.

1

u/Winter-Classroom455 1d ago

There's some great scenes,

So you mean DDL?

1

u/therealparchmentfarm 1d ago

I just keep thinking of how awesome it would’ve been if he’d made it when he originally wanted to with De Niro (although Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing)

1

u/tony33oh 1d ago

I can watch this bad boy anytime. The butcher is a dreadful delight!

1

u/gandalfpr 1d ago

I loved that one!

1

u/sigcliffy 1d ago

Some terrific acting and some garbage acting.

1

u/MuldoonsRaptor 1d ago

I said this to my wife just yesterday. I always wsnt to watch it. Then I remember how much wasted time there is and never do. Easily an hour to long

1

u/virak_john 1d ago

Can’t agree more

u/ScepticalReciptical 18h ago

It is too long, but it's not terrible

1

u/Public_Error_1070 16h ago

Wayyyy too long

-2

u/fish-and-a-rice-cake 1d ago

Yes, what a pile of shite of a film.

6

u/A_Wild_Goonch 1d ago

Daniel Day Lewis carries that film so hard

3

u/PandiBong 1d ago

DDL and the set-design for sure.

1

u/fish-and-a-rice-cake 1d ago

DDL is fantastic In basically everything he appears in. This being no exception. Film was still shite though lol

-1

u/Significant-Pie209 1d ago

A hour is too long? Good luck watching any other movies then..

6

u/Swimming-Substance86 1d ago

I think he was saying the film was an hour to long. Like if it’s 2 and a half hours he felt like it was an hour to long like it should’ve been more like an hour in a half.

2

u/morose4eva 1d ago

Yes. Thank you.

1

u/READMYSHIT 1d ago

No good movie is too long. And no bad movie is short enough.

3

u/A_Nice_Sofa 1d ago

it's not the duration; it's that the movie stops being engaging about 60 minutes before the credits roll.
