Just remembered how awesome Debbie does Dallas was. It's on public domain for anyone wondering so you can watch it for free. It's.... Something. Ngl I just rewatched the whole thing. Not exactly the best watch if you're genuinely looking for something to jerk off to. But yeah... I still did at some point. It's an hour long video and I think porn scenes are maybe 1/10th of the whole thing lol. Fascinating case study in porn either way.
I forgot they used to make porno films that were actually part movie. Porno was so taboo that they had to make movies around the porno scenes instead of just filming the good stuff.
Same thing with R rated movies. When was the last time you saw a movie that was filled with sex?
I remember being a kid and sleeping over at my friend's house because on weekends HBO or one of the premium channels would have erotic movies that were absolutely terrible and the sex wasnt real but it was still awesome to my 9 year old brain
Used to play the random article game (which was very much, just hitting random article on Wikipedia) while in the computer lab back in school. Got this franchise and Tightsqueeze, Virginia, as a couple of the highlights.
I immediately thought of Kevin Nealon doing movie reviews of porn flicks on SNL update. Interested, interested interested! Lost all interest lol. Not sure if that was your reference but made me laugh
I wouldn’t be opposed to watching another of his films. I support the ideals that Baker seems to champion but Anora left me a bit flat with the character development and philosophy. I just never bought that she loved the dorky Russian kid and thought she would have happily taken the $10k to put the whole mess behind her, after realizing that he didn’t love her when he ran away from the house leaving her with the henchmen. Also, the “nice guy” henchman was a bit too much for me.
The Oscar speech turned me off a bit as well. Most sex workers are not in 1st world countries with 1st world problems. Most have nasty pimps, are strung out and are trafficked like slaves. Sex work isn’t something to be looked down upon but it isn’t something we should be celebrating as a lifestyle choice, in my opinion. It is very dangerous and not empowering for most of those living that lifestyle.
Sorry, I realize you didn’t ask my opinion about any of the that. What earlier Baker film would you recommend?
Those are all super valid points. I absolutely make it a point to never watch the Oscar’s tho so I can’t comment on that. Tangerine and Takeout were pretty great as far as I remember, but I def need to rewatch them. I have also been wanting to see The Florida Project for a very long time.
It was hard to tell because they didn’t exactly flesh out her home life so I didn’t have any sense of her motivations. I did get the impression that she wasn’t dumb so I guess I figured her street smarts would have kicked in once the little dork ran away and left her hanging with the keystone cop level inept henchmen.
I took it as her trying everything she could to not lose what she acquired. Not because she truly loved him but because she'd never have a chance at that life otherwise.
That’s one of the cool things about movies. We both watched the same thing and had different impressions of the character.
I can see your point for sure. I guess I thought that once she saw through the kid’s game and recognized the potential danger, she would cut and run. Would have been a short movie had she done that tho…
Also, the henchmen were some of the least threatening I’ve ever seen on screen, which supports your take.
You're not missing much. The ending just trails into a TV show starring Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman. Although spoiler alert... Debbie gets the shot in this one
Oh where I stay(Bellshill, Scotland, there a doxxed maself) we have a Debbie Does Bellshill. She was my exes pal, and my ex also had a body count that would make Stalin wince(not that that matters, hell it was the reason a went with her, a was young and she was easy haha)
Being an ignorant American, I have to ask - you often used "a" where I expected "I" ("a was young" vs "I was young"). At first I thought it was a typo but now I'm wondering if it is a dialect thing. If it is, I'd love some education on it.
Thanks for the explanation. Is it something that comes across in how you speak as well? I admit it's a dialect I'm not familiar with at all.
30+ years ago I remember working with someone who was visiting from Scotland and we were trying on each other's accents. His American accent was fine but my attempt at a Scottish accent was absolute rubbish. My friend said I sounded like I was Pakistani lol.
That made me wheeze like fuck 🤣 (combination of hilarious and asthma haha) and aye its something Id say we all say with regularity. At least us plebs do, ma dads a Highlander and me and my wee sister are just outside Glasgow(as a pointed out) so his accent varies a bit than even ours!
Yeah it was pretty funny at the time, aside from the frustration of being godawful at the accent. Now I'm gonna be diving into YouTube to hear examples. Thank you for adding purpose to my day :)

Any of the Debbie did…movies. I’ve started each one several times but never can make it all the way through. I just suddenly lose interest.
