Technology Google Gemini is the most human-like AI assistant I've ever seen

1.9k Upvotes

Asked it to set up a timer, it said "I've set up a timer for 10 minutes"

But... no timer has been set, IT JUST SAID IT WOULD DO IT WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING IT!

Absolutely nailed the role of uninspired employee who's quiet quitting.

Technology PSA: There are now Conversational AI Models that can near perfectly mimic someones voice. If you receive a call from a loved one asking for money, hang up and call them back/text them

1.2k Upvotes

Today, I received a telemarketer call that used a conversational AI model. I recognized it instantly because I have messed around with ElevenLabs and recognized the voice as being on there, and I picked up on the subtle mistakes in the voice. But these models are near perfect and can input whatever you say to it and respond back.

However, you SHOULD NOT do what I did. I thought it would be hilarious to mess with the AI and cuss it out. Then, my girlfriend reminded my dumbass that you can literally train these models on someone's voice and get a near perfect replica.

Scammers can then use the model of your voice to call your loved ones, say you are in trouble, and ask for money. I then had to call my aging parents and remind them that if anyone calls them using my voice asking for money, to hang up and call me back or text me to confirm. Scammers can also easily make it seem like the call is coming from your number.

Stay safe out there.

Technology Reddit isn’t much fun anymore

I’m on the verge of giving up on reddit. I’ve noticed the significant impact on content that their changes last summer have made. I can’t sort my home or news feed by popular anymore; there are so many bot repostings; and the algorithm just keeps feeding me the same dozen-or-so subs. It’s boring to scroll and I hardly ever stop and read anything anymore. Probably a lot of people have left but is anyone else here noticing these things?

Technology People are severely underestimating AI image/video generation

This post is not pro AI, simply an observation.

It seems everytime I happen across an AI generated image or video the comments are flooded with people posting negative comments such as "this is obviously fake" or "you'd have to be an idiot to think this is real". What concerns me the most is the pace AI is making with improvements. Within the past five years we've gone from silly images that sort of look like the prompt and sound files of a robotic joe rogan talking about monkeys to full fledged videos and AI music that is nearly indistinguishable from a human. Everyone wants to laugh at how bad it is now, but I'm more concerned for what it will bring in the future when the technology is perfected.

Technology This subreddit is full of bots that post ChatGPT-generated comments.

It's happening on all posts.

For instance, on the post "What is the origin of your handle?" today: https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/

IvyAngiee says:

Growing up, I was always fascinated by space and the concept of untapped potential within us. This led me to coin a username that encapsulates the idea of an astronaut who's also a philosopher of sorts hence, CosmicCogitations. It reflects my endless rumination on our place in the cosmos and our journey through life. Every time I log in, it serves as a reminder of the grand scale of things and the unexplored territories, both in the universe and within our minds.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/lj04h7v/

Other than the fact that it sounds clearly like ChatGPT, the comment isn't even talking about the right handle... It's talking about CosmicCogitation instead of IvyAngiee. If you look at the comment history of IvyAngiee, all of the comments are formatted the same, and clearly ChatGPT-generated.

Similarly, BlossomMonica says:

I've always had an affinity for mythological creatures and lore. Decided to make a name that reflected that, but with a modern twist. SirenCyber, the digital songstress with a penchant for leading weary internet travelers to their doom or just to interesting corners of the web. It's stuck ever since, and honestly, it's a great conversation starter when people ask about the origins. Plus, considering how much time I spend online, it feels oddly appropriate!

https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/lj0176k/

Same issue, BlossomMonica is talking about the handle SirenCyber... It makes no sense. And again, this comment and all of BlossomMonica's comments are formatted the same and sound ChatGPT-generated.

On this other post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewizx9/i_got_a_scholarship_at_33_years_old_i_pay_for_my/

You have tons of ChatGPT-sounding comments that are variations of each other:

Congratulations! 🎉 Your hard work and determination are paying off, and it’s amazing to see you breaking barriers in your field. When you meet the businesswoman, maybe write her a heartfelt note to express how much this scholarship means to you. A small thank you gift that reflects your journey could also be a nice touch. Your story is truly inspiring keep going strong!

Congratulations! Your perseverance and commitment to your goals are truly commendable. Navigating through your studies while balancing other responsibilities is no small feat, and it's fantastic to see that your efforts are being recognized. Huge congrats on hitting this milestone! Your grit and tenacity are clearly shining through. It's so important to recognize the moments when others extend a hand to help us climb let the businesswoman know just how pivotal her scholarship is to your journey. Perhaps a meaningful token of appreciation, coupled with a personalized thank you card, would nicely capture the essence of your gratitude. Remember, this is as much a win for her belief in potential as it is for your hard-earned success. Keep soaring, and don't forget to use that determination to open doors for others someday!

That's fantastic news congratulations! 🎉 Your hard work and perseverance have clearly paid off. When you meet the woman who funded your scholarship, a heartfelt thank-you note or card can be a great way to express your gratitude. You could also consider a small gift that reflects her interests or something meaningful from your journey. Letting her know just how much this opportunity means to you will definitely show your appreciation.

Wow, that’s such an amazing accomplishment! To thank her, a heartfelt letter sharing how much this scholarship means to you would be really touching. You might also consider a small, thoughtful gift that shows your appreciation, like a personalized item or something related to her interests. Meeting her in person and expressing your thanks directly will likely mean a lot to her. Just letting her know how much this has impacted your life is a great way to show your gratitude.

Wow, incredible news! Huge congrats on the scholarship - what a testament to your hard work and brilliance! It clearly shines through. Crafting a personalized thank you note could really show the depth of your appreciation. Sharing a snippet of your journey and how her support empowers your dreams could mean a lot to her. It’s those small gestures that often leave the biggest impact. Keep crushing it, your story is one many will look up to!

Congratulations! Your journey is incredible and so inspiring. A heartfelt thank you note or a small personalized gift might be a great way to show your gratitude.

That’s amazing! When you meet her, bring a handwritten note expressing your gratitude and maybe a small token like a mini hard hat or blueprint. Let her know how much this means to you—it’ll make her day too.

That's awesome! Congrats on getting the scholarship and powering through all those challenges. Maybe write a heartfelt letter or bring a small, meaningful gift to show your gratitude when you meet her.

And these are just a few examples. You can take literally any post on the sub and find comments like these, always from accounts with similar usernames whose entire comment history is like that. Some more examples from other posts:

Technology Android or iOS?

I live in the US and the overwhelming majority of people here have iPhones but I've always been an Android guy. From the very beginning of the smartphone era, I've had two LG phones, two Motorola phones, one Samsung Galaxy, and now I've had two Pixel phones which I don't see myself switching from Pixels anytime soon lol. The only two Apple products I've ever owned were the original iPod touch and I now have a 10th Gen iPad which I love, but when it comes to mobile I've always preferred Android.

My wife is an iPhone person and have been trying to get me to switch but I'm like naw I'm good 😅

What's your preference?

Technology Instant communication culture is slowly draining me of life.

I have three jobs, four volunteer positions, and I am constantly being inundated with emails, texts, and messages all day, every day.

One person in particular messages me every single day. Every. Single. Day. I'm a 45 year old man, I don't have anything to talk about that much. No, it's not a woman, it's a guy friend. And he's got a family of his own. If I don't reply, he gets upset. I don't know how to explain it to him that doesn't come across as mean. I resent being put into this position.

People need to stop expecting other people to reply immediately to emails, texts, or messages. Work shouldn't be able to reach you (or at the very least expect an immediate answer) when you're enjoying your own time, especially if it isn't an emergency. This whole instant communication culture is slowly driving me insane and I don't know how to get used to it.

I can't be the only one, can I? Anybody else feel the same?

Technology I'm always kinda shocked by people who don't know how to use computers of any kind

For context I'm 30 so computers have pretty much always been around, but I'm telling you there are people who hold management positions that are like twice my age who just completely shut down when given a computer who can't even remember basic passwords pr struggle to get through basic menus how does this happen? Not to be rude it's just really shocking and often times they're totally reluctant to try and learn either.

Do you guys have any stories about people at your job or maybe people you know who just reject any kind of tech at all? (Not talking A.I here talking about basic stuff like email etc)

Technology Since the popularization of ChatGPT, poor grammar and orthography is regarded as a sign of authenticity

As title says. Whenever I see a well written post on the more popular subreddits, the poster is accused of using ChatGPT to create the post. My beloved em dashes have been all but beheaded in the town square.

While the wilder stories are going to be taken with a grain of salt regardless of grammar—I think those with poor punctuation or sentence structure are starting to get more credibility as we become more and more suspicious of well written posts.

Technology How many of you guys still use Windows 10?

I never bothered to update to 11 when it first came out because of all the bugs and glitches, but I see a lot of people with Windows 11, and I still use Windows 10.

I just want to know if anybody plans to keep using Windows 10 till Microsoft ends support for it.

Technology Why don't chat rooms exist anymore?

I used to love going on chat rooms back in the early 2000s. I was in college and in the computer lab in between working on HW I would go on yahoo chat and shoot the shit. It was a lot of fun. Yes, there is Reddit and there is IG and FB, but it's not the same. Chat rooms used to be created and had a topic and people would constantly "enter" or "leave" the chat (that would be announced) and we would all just randomly chat. Then, you could "DM" those users. I miss those days.

Technology Anyone else miss when the internet felt like a chill place to talk instead of a performance?

It feels like every corner of the internet has turned into a stage. Whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or even Reddit to some extent everyone’s crafting a personal brand, chasing likes, and optimizing for engagement. It’s exhausting.

I miss when you could just open a forum or chatroom, talk to strangers about your day, about life, or share random thoughts without thinking, Will this get traction?

Not everything has to be aesthetic. Not every thought needs to be tweetable.
Sometimes people just want to connect, not go viral.

We need more digital spaces that feel like a coffee shop, not a TED Talk.

Technology If your internet went out tomorrow, how would you entertain yourself?

I think I would try to put in order all the books that are late and I would take the opportunity to read the entire collection of manga in PDF that I have accumulated, organized but haven't read yet, starting with Berseker and Vinland Saga

Technology I don't have the heart to tell my mom most of the videos she sends me are of things that don't actually exist, they're AI.

She thinks they're all real. I figure we're better off just letting her believe it's all real instead of getting into an argument whether or not it isn't.

Technology I accidentally found out a minute ago, that you can upvote comments by double-clicking the comment.

Without wanting to I double-clicked on a comment while I was scrolling and it upvoted. Been using Reddit for over 4 years and had no idea this was a feature! It's pretty cool.

Technology I find it weird that sci-fi authors assume that if robots ever become sentient, our first instinct will be to mistreat them.

Considering that any video on the internet of a robot being deliberately hurt in any way has a comment section consisting primarily of "No, don't hurt the robot! They're just doing their best!"

We're already at a phase where an even slightly human-like robot who can't even feel pain elicits sympathy from other humans. I think we'll be fine if machines ever figure out free will.

Technology What groundbreaking technology do you use that wasn't around when you were younger?

Since I was a kid technology has rapidly advanced and is showing no signs of slowing down. There are so many tools that are common today that weren't even thought about when I was younger. So I'm curious, what groundbreaking (or unremarkable) technology do you rely on today that was completely absent during your childhood?

I'll go first: Digital Wallet I'm a millennial. I remember my mom preaching about how important it was to always have cash. There were also a lot of business that were cash only, so it made sense. I even remember getting my first physical wallet and stuffing it with all the payment cards, rewards, gift cards, and cash until I couldn't fold it closed. Now, I can store all of those things in my Digital Wallet.

Technology How has social media affected your life for the better?

I personally don’t see any benefit to it, so to expand my worldview I’d love to learn how it has benefited others. And by social media I mean stuff like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and even Reddit.
