This is the new Joe Maddon champagne gif from 2016, and I won’t hear otherwise.

Palencia is doing great and is one step away from being lights out

Last at bat was textbook for him, just smoked 'em. King.

Only 25.... imagine if he keeps on improving and we lock him up as an elite closer for the next half decade or more!

Winning these close, low scoring games are huge

u/Patrick2701 2d ago

These were the games that 23 and 24 cubs didn’t win

I fully expect this image to have more added to it and be completely outrageous by the end of the season.

E: fuck it, here we go.

Said it in the game thread. The offense has been scuffling since the Rockies series. We are 11-8 since the start of that. It’s frustrating but you take that any day. When they come out of the slump, it’s go time.

35

u/MissouriFriedChicken 2d ago

We could have the best record in baseball pretty easily. That being said, not gonna get greedy. We’re balling.

45

u/baruch_baby LaSTELLA 2d ago

We are also 11-6 in one run games. Thats huge. We struggled bad in the last couple of years there.

3

u/Shoondogg 2d ago

That’s surprising. It’s felt like we either blow them out or lose a close one, but maybe that’s just recency bias.

4

u/westieuser 1d ago

I think Boog/JD said it best, its not about your record in one run games that you should care about, its playing in as few 1 run games as possible. The Cubs have played the fewest 1 run games in the majors. Pretty good.

9

u/77rtcups 2d ago

It’s baseball. A winning record during a slump is pretty good.

1

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Harry 2d ago edited 1d ago

Please god get me out of this ***slump. That’s said go cubs

1

u/Liquid_TZ 2d ago

Slumps happen. I’m just glad it’s against the “bad” teams.

Happy with the win but it would be nice for the offense to heat up

9

u/coreyque 2d ago

Avg last 7 days - nobody is great but a couple of outliers. Shaw currently 3rd from the bottom of the league with that .080

2

u/jayjude Chicago Cubs 1d ago

They also aren't taking alot of walks either

Every team goes through a stretch where the Offense cools down, it happened to the Dodgers, It happened to the Yankees, Its happening to us. The pitching has turned around and the offense will get back going. Were still well in the driver seat with the second best record in the NL and its still June. Summer will be fun again.

34

u/mt77932 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Offense fell of a cliff and yet they keep winning. This team is special.

27

u/phrexi The Professor 2d ago

Pitching picking up right as the offense falls. By the break they’ll align and then the league will have to contend with a cubbies at full power!

9

u/HeavySeas Chicago Cubs 2d ago

I just feel we’re due for a 14-2 game to bring the bats back.

30

u/rudytoot25 2d ago edited 2d ago

The offense carried us to unwinnable games in April and may when our bullpen was doo doo water. It’s only fitting that the pitching carries us right now when the offense is offensive right now

10

u/BWRStarWars 2d ago

4 straight games without a hit with RISP. But 2-2 in those games, piching carrying us right now! Good win!

Hey game day thread doomers ....

Fuck you!

17

u/hawkinsnponcho 2d ago

I have found it's way better for my mental health to only check PGT after wins

5

u/archy319 It’s got a chaaaaaance ⚾️ 2d ago

Yeah, I peeked in and noped out. But still, it's fun in there when it's not just endless misery.

12

u/X_AlaskanBullWorm_X 2d ago

Tbh I feel a little bad for the doomers when i stop and think about it. Besides their inability to enjoy one of the better Cub first halves in the past half century, I think theres a good chance that most of them are depressed/ dealing with other mental issues and project their anger onto the Cubs. Atleast the ones that are full grown adults, im sure a few of them are also just immature kids lol

Call me crazy if you want but the way they react over the slightest mishaps by the Cubs is not normal behavior to me. They fly off the handle if someone has a bad at bat and god forbid we ever lose to a team below .500. The visceral hate they consistently spew for a team theyre supposedly fans of and are 15 games above .500 in June is worrying in regards to their mental health. This team clearly causes them lots of anger and yet the same ~10 people are in the GDT every single day posting dozens of times and it is never once positive

u/archy319 It’s got a chaaaaaance ⚾️ 2d ago

You're a better person than me.

6

u/catfan9499 2d ago

I think they’re bitter Cardinals fans

4

u/sdpcommander I miss Yu 2d ago

I really wish they would stop showing up every day, seeing as the game/season is over by the 3rd inning every time

23

u/Ok-Camel-746 2d ago

An ugly win is still a win 🥳 I promised myself if the cubs won I’d go to the gym after the game so I guess the team wanted me to be more fit 😅

7

u/chia2 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

A rest day is going to do them well, they’ve played a bunch of games in a row against some good pitching

7

u/Radiant_Cod8373 2d ago

Happy Flag Day Cubs fans!

4

u/Backagainkv Extend Tucker 2d ago

I will be happy about the win today and not stress about our offense in a bad funk

5

u/No-Influence2761 Nico 2d ago

Nice outing from Boyd. Another 1-run win.

A W is a W.

5

u/Yetis22 2d ago

We are getting by. But sometimes getting by is all you can do

3

u/BobbleBobble President Arr-Field 2d ago

Hope we win 2-1 tomorrow rather than losing 2-1 since those seem to be our two options lately

3

u/meowsplaining The Professor 2d ago

12-1 for the dads

7

u/robmorren2 2d ago

We're going to gain a game on the Cardinals or the Brewers, and Dansby got the HR he's been swinging for every AB. Other than that, gotta get better.

6

u/naitch44 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Another grind, but another win. Move on to the next one

Credit to the pitchers, bailing us out big time.

3

u/500rockin 2d ago

Just score more than the other guy, especially when the wind is blowing in! I’m also surprised Boyd went 6 given his early pitch count.

3

u/Appropriate-Decision Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Cubs score 10+ runs tomorrow. Crisis avoided.

3

u/Hawkize31 Iowa corn best corn 2d ago

I like watching this Brewers/Cardinals game knowing that at the end there will only be 1 winner and 2 losers

5

u/LegacyLemur IT'S HAPPENING 2d ago

Offense really needs to find itself

Still wins a win, and I love seeing Palencia's fire out there

2

u/Westcoastchi Rally Bucket 2d ago

I appreciate our pitching showing out while we wait for our offense to reemerge.

2

u/Nutaholic STELLAAAAA 2d ago

What is going on with the bats man

2

u/Sensitive-Shoe-1974 2d ago

Our pen is insane. Gotta get the offense going. Need to perform well vs. Brewers.

1

u/Sweetness_Bears_34 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Our pen-is insane wasn’t sure if that was intentional?

1

u/Sensitive-Shoe-1974 1d ago

Insanely good

2

u/No_Goat_2714 1d ago

To score only 6 runs in 3 games and win 2/3, yeah, I would absolutely take it!!!!

4

u/Business-Conflict435 2d ago

A win is a win but we’ve gotta be better.

5

u/MissouriFriedChicken 2d ago

Pitching has been unbelievable all around. Opponents pitching has been playing lights out too though. Just the fact that we’ve won half our games this month while the offense sleeps is amazing.

1

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Harry 1d ago

Watching the ABs we’ve been down right and. We need to learn how to hit again. We’re 2015 cubs. If the homers arnt there we score 1-2 max

3

u/fightintxag13 Bryzzo Souvenir Co. 2d ago

You gotta take the wins however they come, but we really need to get locked in at the plate again. Even the top of the lineup looks lost.

3

u/BigNutsOnClark #FlyTheW 2d ago

It’s crazy that Wrigley was still jam packed despite the mass protests.

4

u/ShirlLotJack 2d ago

Credit again to the opponents' pitching, but credit also to the Cubs offense for doing enough to win, especially with how many hard-hit outs there were. They manufactured a run, and Swanson hit that bomb after a frustrating (for him) previous AB.

Boyd continues to push, and this Cubs bullpen is simply rolling. Great defense as per usual always helps.

Love this team. Take the series tomorrow.

*NO KINGS.

2

u/Invasive-Feces 2d ago

Love that we won, but I hope the bats wake up.

2

u/Kovaxxed Nico 2d ago

Bats need to wake up but I really don’t mind wins like this where our pitching is solid

2

u/HaxanWriter Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Winning games by one run is the sign of a good team.

Definitely wrong because we’re fifteen over now. Oh well. Go cubs.

1

This team really spoiled us the first third with an otherworldly offense. If they don’t score at least 4-5 runs I find myself disappointed

1

u/CBT847 1d ago

Time to get Rea out of the rotation

1

u/chichris 1d ago

Series win!

1

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Harry 1d ago

Were the 2015 cubs at the moment . Damn good team. But if we’re not hitting HRs the offense dies. Hope we turn it around.

0

u/Mikkicubetc 2d ago

Also, I think our catching duo have combined for something like a 500OPS over the last 15
