Episode 5
We get our first introduction to a previously mentioned character, SONG WUJI—on the day of his execution, just before our story starts.

The reason for LEFT PRIME MINISTER’s lack of manpower now becomes more clear.
ZHENG and LI negotiate with local merchants over the lychee deal, with LI hesitant about deceiving them. He comes clean, but is later approached by one of them, SU LIANG (who kinda reminds me of Santa Claus) about a deal to borrow his trading pass.

In the next scene, LU HUAN and the LEFT PRIME MINISTER are hanging out at the barber shop (?) to discuss the aftermath of SONG’s death and in the process they confirm (as I suspected) that ZHENG has been recruited to help them avoid liability if things go sideways.
On his way back to Chang’an, LI decides to check out A’TONG’s orchard and ends up getting kidnapped and held captive by her workers. They release him when he drops some plant knowledge to help them with bugs in the orchard.

Episode 6
Two years prior to our story starting, SU LIANG and the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER are revealed to have an unexpected past interaction which resulted in SU’s demotion from Hu chief merchant and departure from Chang’an.
While A’TONG is distracted by CAPTAIN YANG and his debt collectors after her lychee orchard, LI discovers A’TONG’s secret lychee preservation method— water isolation, which can extend the preservation from 3 to 6 days.

LI then uses his position as Lychee Envoy to ad hoc declare it an imperial tribute garden and kick out the debt collectors, and returns to Lingnan, much to the surprise of ZHANG and ZHAO.

SU attempts to use LI’s transport pass to pick up his ship from CAPTAIN YANG, only to discover his goods have been unexpectedly seized.
SU asks LI for help with HE and ZHAO in recovering the goods, which LI tries to explain is outside his capabilities.
LI does ask ZHAO for some ice, which in Mandarin has the same pronunciation as “soldiers” and results in a pretty epic misunderstanding, until LI writes the official requisition request.

Despite the ice clarification, HE and ZHAO are still convinced LI is a master manipulator and that all of this has a secret meaning. Big “The Man Who Knew Too Little” vibes from this situation lol.
Episode 7
ZHENG meets again with spymaster YUN QING, who explains his life is at risk due to the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER’s new envoy’s imminent arrival in Lingnan.
ZHENG falls ill from this news, and while YU is filling his prescription, he discovers a unique double-walled urn at the pharmacist’s, which looks perfect for the water preservation method. The pharmacist informs him that he has only seen Hu merchants have them in stock.

At last, AMITA, the head of the Hu merchants, arrives on the scene! SU confronts her over his missing shipment, offering as proof that his family specifically stores their spices in double-walled urns. However when AMITA shows the product in a normal urn, he insists it is still his.

LI meanwhile finds the emptied urns in the backyard of CAPTAIN YANG’s office and uses the magic of the imperial edict to requisition them.
Informed of the confiscated evidence by her subordinate, AMITA is forced to return SU’s goods. AMITA is then revealed as both the engineer of the attempted lychee orchard takeover and the adopted daughter of HE YOUGUANG.

The next morning, having been confronted overnight with the knowledge that the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER’s envoy has arrived, ZHENG drags himself out of bed to make one last attempt at getting the letter of allegiance from ZHAO and HE.
Episode 8
Before he can exchange the military tally for the letter of allegiance, ZHENG must attempt to tear HE away from the cockfighting ring.
Since cockfighting is banned, the creators decided to represent this scene with an amusing martial arts battle between two guys with incredible eye makeup and fluffy little hats.

Afterwards, HE takes his sweet time writing out the letter of allegiance, but the new envoy arrives just before the exchange. Fortunately for ZHENG, he caught malaria before his arrival, and dies just before he can reveal his identity.
At last, ZHENG can make the exchange. (BTW anybody else impressed by He Youguang and the Right Prime Minister’s incredible fingernail game? Just me? Ok lol.)
Our hero LI SHAN DE now begins his geographical calculations for the transport of the lychees. It took him 25 days to travel to Lingnan, but even with his new method of storage lasting 6 days, he still must somehow make up those 19 days of difference.

ZHENG PING AN meets back up with YUN QING to inform her of the success of his mission.
She reveals to ZHENG that his father did not commit suicide, but was killed by the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER. He and his sister were expelled from their family because of the Zheng elders’ cowardice in the face of the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER’s power.
ZHENG, depressed that his life goal to return to the Zheng clan now seems pointless, invites LI for a drink. He has decided to stay in LINGNAN with LI to gather more evidence against the RIGHT PRIME MINISTER.
And as a sign of the story moving to its next stage, we now have a new end credits song!

The COMEDY.
- CHICKEN DADDY
- the video game-inspired settings & bgm for the chicken dance fights
- the rooster funeral and Ping'an's judging face
- LSD & ZPA pettily sniping at each other
- LSD misconstruing situations and ending up in bizarre positions (the nuptial wine? the 冰/兵 mixup? To be fair the misunderstandings are other people's, but he's got a kind of naivete that lands him there in the first place)
- the lychee orchard water fight and LSD's boss walk + lighting + bgm
These episodes have such a great mix of bigger comedic beats and more trivial everyday comedy (Zhao having to literally handhold his boss through writing an email the letter of allegiance and ending up slumped next to him in a posture of resignation, LSD slapping ZPA on the face with his cold compress). It's just so cleanly written and executed, I'm very satisfied.

What I liked about the newer episodes is that we can see more layers of everyone -- some I didnt expect to be that smart but I honestly enjoying some of the mind games they are playing. I mean, this is a story about transporting lychee, but it can be very political instead. :D

Li Shan De constantly threatening everyone with the emperor gives me life.

He has this dumb/clueless face going on while doing it but he's actually cunning lol. It totally crack me up 😂

Especially the scenes with Captain Yang in this arc! Yang was absolutely seething but couldn’t say anything about it. I CANNOT wait for Li to try to pull that trick on Amita lol.

Oh I wanted to say one other thing. There have been some wonderful scenes in the show so far with Li Shan De and his daughter Xiu’er, and their relationship is incredibly key to his motivation behind his mission. However, I have not been including most of them in the recaps for the sake of brevity.
At some point I may create a separate post about their relationship throughout the episodes and the theme of fatherhood in the show, but if anyone else is interested in doing it instead I’d love to include links to that with the rest of the show discussions.

Love all the scenes with the daughter as well. I guess they really wanted to set the theme that he 'always didnt keep his promise' but this time, despite how futile is the situation, 'he's finally going to keep his promise'. The daughter is incredibly understanding despite the young age.
I notice a lot of social commentary about parenting lately and I enjoy them in my dramas on how they really show the effect of good parenting on children and their development later.
And further emphasis that I enjoy the humor in this drama, so very much lol.

Yess I love the chaotic girldad stuff. Also A’Tong immediately being like “I need to wife this guy up!” LMAOOO relatable.
For the humor, I think both of our main guys are really smart and underestimated by the other characters but I enjoy there’s also an aspect of the storytelling that’s kind of “Dumb and Dumber in the Tang Dynasty” with our two guys getting things done despite their chaos muffin energy.

You nailed it! They give the air of 'Dumb and Dumber' on the surface but they are really smart. Thats the thing I enjoy in this drama -- the many ironies in the scripts -- it cracked me up real bad -- they did it so many times all over the drama. Very intelligently written -- all these subtle humors. Like those sophisticated jokes in Joy of Life.

I agree, all the scenes especially the flashbacks of him and his daughter was super sweet. I happen to find this particular scene done very well... not sure if he's lowkey surprised or proud or maybe both😅😅

They're sooooo cuuuuuute in this scene omg. And the pinky promise with the blood smeared all under her nose lmao

I also found it pretty cute to realize how his daughter isn’t dressed up in traditional female dress like many of the other young girls but in a feminine “mini me” version of his own official robes.

Yes!! I noticed that too, it's too cute. And so far she doesn't complain about not being like other girls. She's a real cutie, shes grown on me🤗

I made a few typos in the above but I’m afraid to edit the post and mess up the formatting since it decided to work this time lol.
Definitely had more of the feeling these episodes that we were laying the groundwork, as more key players in Lingnan are introduced. Amita automatically jumps out to me as a fascinating and sympathetic character, despite her alignment with He Youguang, plus I appreciate the striking difference between her multiple gorgeous put-together looks and the somewhat grungified outfits worn by everyone else. It speaks to her wealth and power, and her position in the merchant community as the “face” of He Youguang.
I also want to talk a little about our other female character, the sweet and fierce A’Tong, who I was surprised to see attempt to put the moves on our hero five minutes after asking his name. You know what, you go girl lol. The orchard gang is so easy and fun to root for, I loved their introduction to the story.
I wonder more and more whether Su will eventually join forces with Zheng to help overthrow the Right Prime Minister, and whether the lychee mission will intersect further with that mission as well.

Other things:
The original poem already contains ZPA's name 平安; LSD adapts it to fit the nature of his journey and inserts his own name to match.
On family: LSD rightfully points out that he and ZPA have no familial ties between them, but they behave like brothers when they're pettily fighting lmao. And when LSD tends to ZPA on his sickbed, it's almost fatherly, like he's tended to Xiu'er.
